I fished king crab on the Bering Sea for many years, beginning in 1973. A lot of Norwegians came over to take part in the fishery's heyday. I know many in Norway who would love to do their part in "resolving" the problem. Especially as they were a part of wiping them out nearly to extinction on the Bering Sea back in the early 1980s. It could be done if the Norwegian government was actually serious about it.

@@jakebyrne2416 --- They didn't go anywhere but onto dinner plates. They were fished hard for a decade and ultimately had their base knocked down. As it turns out, a decadal oscillation in water temps occurred along with attendant species shifts which made for better conditions for cod and other predators which eat mostly young and juvenile crab when available. I also did not appreciate how SLICE just gave us a slice of this documentary and then left us hanging as to what the scientists discovered when they abruptly ended it. Not to mention, they failed to answer the most basic questions about where the king crab came from, how they got there, that the government restricts the harvesting of king crabs, (I learned that by reading the comments), or what the govt plans to do about the problem, etc.,. so more or less what im hearing is that king crabs need to be farmed hardcore till the numbers come down
@yeshuasbeloved5492 жыл бұрын
That's what I heard too. Me: sitting at table with clarified butter, lemons, sweet tea, nutcracker, Joe's Crabshack shell opener and bib. Also me: I'd like mine cooked in the garlic butter seasoning, please.

Given king crabs cost 40 bucks or more wholesale you'd think there would be an easy solution for this.
@flyrog072 жыл бұрын
You wouldn’t want the price to go down to $15 would ya?🤔

@@flyrog07 Yeah I guess alaskan king crab fishermen would be kinda pissed if another plentiful source of their particular catch opened up across the pond and cut into their profits by driving the price down.

Interesting fact. Around the UK there is a related species of deep sea crab called the giant spider crab, it's just as tasty and there are millions of them but brits won't eat it because they don't like how it looks. What I'm getting at here is that "just eat the damn crabs" might not be such an obvious solution to everyone.

Catch the crabs, and live-export them to Japan, where they are worth hundreds of dollars each. Problem solved.

No wonder they taste so good. I just wonder if they are so many, why haven't we started selling them as a food source.

Let me add on a serious note: I think the Norwegians are taking a pragmatic view. They don’t want a fishery to develop for these because they don’t want to cement these as being economically necessary. And King Crab fishermen elsewhere probably don’t want the market flooded with cheap Norwegian King Crab.

Many other commenters mention that if we were to fish for them, then people would actually increase their population intentionally to continue making a profit. Except that's kind of what's happening anyways... I think if they really wanted to get rid of them it'd be totally legal to catch them, but illegal to try to farm them, or even throw them back after catching. Either way, I'm sure people are catching them and seeding illegally. The whole reason they are there in the first place was to be farmed and sold. Probably by the select few allowed to farm them in limited quantities, who then trickle them into the market for a higher value. That's just my cynical theory anyway.
