King Crimson were the grandfathers of progressive rock. At risk of being told I'm wrong, I daresay that Crimson single handedly INVENTED the whole genre of prog! Robert Fripp is the mastermind behind Crimson and is still around and involved in the music business. His sister Patricia is, surprisingly, a corporate speaking coach in San Francisco. Peter Sinfield was the master poet who wrote the lyrics on at least the first several albums. The singer here is the late Greg Lake who we lost very recently to cancer. "In the Wake of Poseidon" was their second album after this one and retains very much the same sound and style. By the third album, "Lizard," they had begun changing their style a bit, slowly gravitating into a more jazz-like sound.

King Crimson is the father of Progressive Rock. Initially, Yes was a guitar-driven psychedelic band that occasionally played covers of other groups. They went in a progressive direction on their third album, "The Yes Album" in 1971 with the arrival of Steve Howe, two full years after ITCOTCK! Yes' turn in a more progressive direction was directly influenced by King Crimson. In many ways they followed directly in their footsteps. On the Yes song "Heart of the Sunrise", the members of Yes cite "21st Century Schizoid Man" as a direct influence on that song's compositional style and meter change. In the BBC documentary "Prog Rock Britannia" Bill Bruford tells how when the members of Yes heard the first King Crimson album in 1969, they were "scared to death". To further quote Bill Bruford: "no one knew that rock musicians could play that well. ... This was scary; this was the best group in the world." Jon Anderson even has been quoted as saying that the first King Crimson album was notice to them and the rest of rock music that it was time for everyone to "up their game, or else". BTW, Jon Anderson provides guest vocals on King Crimson's third album, "Lizard", and everyone knows where Bill Bruford went after leaving Yes.

I just watched the live performance of "Starless" a couple weeks ago. Awesome. First time I had heard it. They have 3 drummers. "Moonchild" is great, too.

Opeth can be a little bit arrogant at times, mainly because they refuse to claim bands like Crimson and Rush...as influences?? I hear these bands in a lot of Opeth music.....maybe not on purpose...but the subconscious influence exists!
@Cr8Tron5 жыл бұрын
Not sure about that...(?) Mike's been always pretty avowed about his love of prog. There's quite a handful of Opeth tunes that were even intentionally titled exactly the same as the captions of many classic prog tracks/albums/bands.

I remember when I've heard this song first time in the year 1969 . I was overwhelmed and I could not stop listen to it over and over again for 2 hours. Only this song from whole wonderful album. It was 54 years ago and I still love this song . However , it saddens me deeply that its lyrics still describe our reality just like in the past. The future of mankind is still in the hands of greedy fools. It is a tragedy of human race that we don't learn from our mistakes. Since the end of WW II , conflicts and local wars on Earth never stopped. Mankind perfected weapon of mass destruction and some psychopaths among ruling elites may press the red button and destroy our planet and life on it.

King Crimson definitely had a huge influence on a number of metal genres, specifically the 1972-1974 band, which recorded the albums “Larks Tongues In Aspic”, “Starless and Bible Black”, and “Red”. Some of their heaviest tracks were “Larks Tongues In Aspic Part 2”, “Fracture”, “Red”.

Depression sinks in with the opening guitar phrase as I realise that yet again someone is reacting to a FAKE version of the song. This isn't King Crimson, it's a 21st century re-recording (insert joke here) made by goodness-knows-which musicians. And vocals apart, it really doesn't sound like the original. I know the original like the back of my hand, the timing of every phrase, the timbres. This? Never mind the drum sound, the digital pseudo-mellotron keyboards and "woodwinds" are a travesty.

Hey, all you amateurs... This is the original King Crimson line up, recorded at/for the BBC in 1969. That's why there's all that static and hiss. This is from the official bootleg CD box (the cover is seen in this video) released directly by Robert Fripp on the DGM label in 1997. I have this box set. Midi? Sorry to bust your bubble, guys, but this was all raw analog, including melotron and everything else. The only digital is when it was transferred to CD for it's release. You know why the singer sounds so much like Greg Lake?...because it is Greg Lake. 1969 baby!

This was the original line up, with Michael Giles on drums. This was recorded at/for the BBC in 1969. Hear all that hiss and static? That's because it was taken from a copy of the original session tapes. This was released on CD in 1997 by Robert Fripp on the DGM label. I own this set myself. That's the real stuff boys. This is just Greg Lake's vocals over a cheesy arrangement and not the band's musicians playing at all. The vocals even get off the beat. This really is a terrible version that doesn't do justice to this song at all. The real version is not on KZbin as Robert Fripp gets them removed almost as soon as they pop up. This is the real version: vimeo.com/178581351 And the actual isolated Greg Lake vocal version is absolutely chilling. The only one I could find has some silly piano on top but I can't find the real isolated track anymore either here.
