The scene takes rather considerable liberties with the historical facts. Edward II was captured by a small scouting party on 16 November 1326 after fleeing Caerphilly Castle; there was no major battle (as the setting here would suggest) leading up to the event. The actual abdication itself didn't occur until almost two months later (21 January 1327), and that was inside Kenilworth Castle (not in an open field) in front of an assembly of nobles. Neither Isabella or Edward III was present at either the capture or the abdication ceremony.

True. I believe the image of Edward abdicating before Isabella and Mortimer on the battlefield was taken from a painting produced years later.

@@immad9706 When Isabella and the young Edward III landed in Britain in late September 1326, most of the English nobility defected to their cause (largely because Edward II's principle advisors were so despised). Hoping to buy time in which to raise troops, Edward II retreated - first to Gloucester and then to Wales (and then attempted to sail for Ireland, but bad weather prevented it). He then took refuge at Caerphilly and attempted to rally his remaining supporters, but on 02 November, when the army of Isabella and Edward III approached, he fled - abandoning his warchest and most of his supplies. He was betrayed to a scouting party about a fortnight later.

Wrong. There was no established procedure for removing an English king. On 20 January 1327, the Earl of Lancaster and the bishops of Winchester and Lincoln met privately with Edward in the Berkeley castle where he was held as prisoner. They informed Edward that if he were to resign as monarch, his son Prince Edward would succeed him, but if he failed to do so, his son might be disinherited as well, and the crown given to an alternative candidate. In tears, Edward agreed to abdicate, and on 21 January, Sir William Trussell, representing the kingdom as a whole, withdrew his homage and formally ended Edward's reign. A proclamation was sent to London, announcing that Edward, now known as Edward of Caernarvon, had freely resigned his kingdom and that Prince Edward would succeed him. The coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on 1 February 1327.

Funny but remember Mel Gibson's Braveheart is a big fat lie since almost everything in the movie is historical inaccurate like how Isabella was still in France when William Wallace was executed since she wasn't married yet to her future husband (plus she was 9 years old Which the movie made the unfortunate implications that Wallace was a pedophile rapist!). Plus her son was born ten years after Wallace's death. Sorry for the rant but I disliked it when people think Braveheart is a true story when it's not. Go watch Outlaw King instead since its more accurate than Braveheart.

She was known as the shewolf and had deeply personal hatred for Dispenser Jr. Oddly enough, she tried to intervene and stop Hugh's father's execution. They didn't even take off his armor but beheaded him and feed him to the dogs. The Dispensers helped Edward govern his kingdom, and the King did not care how they did it. They started stealing land and murdering hundreds of people, but probably worst of all, took Isabella's children from her as hostages while Edward did nothing to stop them. I've read about all the other nasty things they did and I am not surprised they we killed in the way they were. Dispenser Jr even tried to starve himself to death just to avoid his punishment.

In reality yes Edward was certainly his son and resembled Edward II very closely. Edward II gets a very poor showing in modern times. He was handsome, tall and strong but has strange interests for the time. He enjoyed diving in rivers and lakes, sailing and enjoyed the company of many commoners, especially those with professions that interested him. He inherited an increasingly untenable war in Scotland that ultimately lasted over 30 years and defined his reign. He also had an unhealthy relationship with male favourites. Many modern commentators therefore conclude he was gay despite having many mistresses and fathering several children with them. In many ways he was viewed as a model Prince in his youth due to his stature and the fact that his father Edward, while fearsome and effective, was not that well liked as he was a very tall, lanky and intimidating man with a droopy eye and lisp. In the end Edward II couldn't match his father's achievements and met a very undignified end. Edward III in many ways took the best aspects of his father in terms of his looks and stature and the kingship and martial abilities of his grandfather and was one of England's greatest Kings. There is a very interesting pattern in this period. England tended to have a very ineffectual King that caused unrest and civil war followed by a great King who achieved great military success, followed by another failure of a King. Henry III was weak and ineffective and Edward I experienced this first hand and did everything in his power to reverse his father's failures. Then despite Edward Is abilities his son Edward II was useless in the end. His son Edward II was a great King like his father and his son Edward the Black Prince was a very successful ruler and military commander in his own right. However he died a year before Edward III and the black prince's son Richard II became king. He was a boy when he was crowned and grew up to be an inneffective glutton who spent extravagantly and lost most of the gains of his father and grandfather. He also became a Tyrant in his later years and was eventually deposed by Henry IV who gave way to another of England's great Kings Henry V.

Normally you see on movies and Tv Shows armies of the 10th -12th century fully geared with plate armors, everyone being knights, etc. On this video is the exact opposite, if they didn't say a thing you would thing that this is during the 11th or so, because every single one but the queen, one of his noble men and one knight is using only chain mail armors and coifs... I think only one has shoulder plates.

In addition to all the points that have rightly been made, the guy playing Edward III is too old. This fellow looks to be in his 30s at least. Edward III was only 15 years old at the time.

My 20th great grandparents they were/ are. But forget the red hot poker nonsense . That's a flat out crock of shit. Most likely smothered though. A lot of what you see / read about the Plantagenets is highly "embellished" And a lot is true and pretty awful sometimes. Rollo founder of the House of Normandy to Geoffrey of Anjou thru and beyond Edward III are great grandparents to me .

This was the young man in Braveheart, that supposedly was the homosexual future king of England. The same young man who Edward the First would not sent to William Wallace as a representative of his to talk peace terms with up in Scotland! Then years later he has to give up his crown to his wife. This man NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO WEAR THE CROWN OF A KING. IF YOU DO NOT ACT OR THINK LIKE A "Real Man or a King, Then you do not carry the respect that comes with such a high position." You must work hard for the common man, because that's where the heart of any nation is. YOU MUST RESPECT THE COMMON FOLK, OR THEY WILL THROUGH YOU UNDER THE BUS OR WORSE, HAVE YOUR HEAD TAKEN OFF. WHICH WAS COMMON IN ENGLAND IN THOSE TIMES.
@triplehmafia6556
@triplehmafia6556 3 жыл бұрын
He was actually a good man, maybe not the best king. He mingled with commoners, even thatched their roofs for them. It was one of the reasons the nobility hated him, that and his supposed homosexual paramours. His portrayal in Braveheart is totally inaccurate, he was athletic and well-built, not effeminate, and Edward I never killed any of his favorites. It's also hard to actually say he was gay, he mentions his love for his wife in one of the poems written during his captivity. He dosen't make any reference to his homosexuality.

For clarity, it was not any alleged homosexuality or his inability to “be a real man” that was the problem. A lord, let alone a king, could do as they please in private. The issue was that Edward wouldn’t listen to his lords, instead allowing his boyfriend to be his key and pretty much only advisor. They pleaded with him, tried forcing the boyfriend into exile. In the end they had enough.
