I just ordered the exact same one and I’m excited to build it

I am about to build the old Airfix 1/600 scale KGV, but seeing that makes me keen to do the 1/700 Tamiya version. I have a couple of Japanese Pacific squadrons of Tamiya and enjoy their 1/700 range of kits. The 1/350 Mikasa is my flag ship at the moment.

Louis Napoleon thanks for watching, I really enjoyed building these from time to time because they truly are something you can do in a weekend and there a nice break from either cars or tanks that I do a lot of.

Mr mad dogDo you recommend that I paint the part first and then glue or what do you recommend I am confused about the painting glue order for this kid

J. Sanabria I definitely understand. Sorry I haven’t had the time to get a good shipbuilding tutorial up I’ve been wanting to do it for quite some time but it’s still a few weeks away. Basically what I do is a paint the parts the base color that I’m going to use while they are on the sprue. That is a paint them with my airbrush or with a spray can I don’t brush paint them on the sprue

J. Sanabria once I cut them off the screw there is that little bit of area that’s unpainted. I assemble the ship and then it’s very easy to touch up those areas with the same paint using a paintbrush. Then if I do camouflage I use a brush to do the camouflage. Also I almost exclusively used Tamiya extra thin cement in the green cap. Every once in a while I’ll use the black liquid cement from model master but 99% of what I do is done with Tamiya glue. Hope this helps. I promise I’ll get a 700 scale ship tutorial up sometime in the month of July. Good luck and enjoy your build

Sir do you paint on the spruce? What is your painting strategy? Thanks

J. Sanabria Thank you for asking. In this scale I do most of my painting on the sprue. That is if I use the airbrush. If I brush paint I find it leaves pools around the sprue gates and then it becomes more difficult once I cut it off of the sprue. If I do a camouflage paint scheme I will usually paint the first color on the sprue and anything else that I have to do usually will be brushed painted on after assembly. I hope that helps

I hand paint so I guess I have to be more careful, thank you for responding

J. Sanabria Nothing wrong with hand painting whatsoever. It’s just as paints have changed formulations over the years sometimes I have to adapt to a new paint. I really liked the testers acrylic that was the ship colors from the old flow quill line but in an acrylic form. Once those went away I had to go to the Vallejo paints or whoever is making those now. Those have been OK but not great. My biggest problem with using acrylics is that most of my weathering techniques were also done in acrylic and that has caused some issues at times.

Maddog Merv I use Tamiya, paint bushing only, I am experimenting using a paint retarder from tamiya to improve flow, it seems to work, but it leaves the paint with a wet look and takes longer to dry I ma doing the King George V from Tamiya next, so I will paint on the spruce, cut from spruce, remove extra plastic and retouch if needed on the are where the extra spruce was removed, let’s see how it works.

J. Sanabria A friend of mine says he uses Mr. leveling thinner with his Tamiya paints and it makes it brush very well. I’m not sure about the gloss appearance however. That should be easy to remedy with a spray can of dull coat.
