Such a skillful reenactor. I felt like a young servant listening and learning from a mentor. I enjoyed how he continued oiling the sword while holding the attention of the listener by facial expressions, voices, and gestures. I look forward to the continuation of this series.

Oh thanks for this story, I an a decent of the DeVere family and have have only known that fact for about 3 to 4 years. Prior to that I have always been drawn to history and the middle ages the most and the era of the Magna carta was always my favorite but I had no idea as to why, but since finding out I now know.

Loved this! King John (a direct ancestor through 3 lines, I found out) was a giant d-bag, but I too would throw anyone who mistreated sweet doggos into the deepest pit I could, so that's a point in my 23rd great-granddad's favor!

Sure you're a descendant. ROFL There's no way to even prove that after 900 years. Most family lines can only be absolutely traced to around the 1400's, as there aren't usually any records beyond that, UNLESS it's a pure royal line that can be positively traced. You can't trace your lineage back that far, and claim to be descended from his line, especially since the traceable royal Plantagenet lines were obliterated by Henry VIII in his psychotic fear of being removed from his throne.

I actually heard this story more than 2 decades ago. But in the version I know it was a shepherd and not a baker, and king John forgave both the shepherd and the bishop (instead of stripping him of his title).
