The ending is almost the same for both versions of the movie. In the American version you hear only Kong's roar at the end giving the impression he defeated Godzilla and was swimming away in victory. In the Japanese version you hear both monsters roar. This is usually interpretated as Kong could not hold his breath underwater indefinitely like Godzilla can and simply made a hasty retreat.

Either way Godzilla survived and they did a rematch in 2021
