I never expected to see this song turn up from its grave! Well done! I sold a banjo to a friend of mine signed by Chubby Parker probably around 1925/1926, which was around when the banjo itself was brand new. So there's our little bit of history connection. ;)

We (The Bobby McGees) were really influenced by an old Pete & Peggy Saegar album American Songs for Children that El's mum had on old 60's vinyl...this song sounds like it may well be on that album!

Yeah, Chubby used what was called a "pony" banjo, I think. They're smaller than a regular open-back even, with about an 8-9" pot and a scale that lets it tune to cGCEG (as opposed to gDGBD). They were popular in banjo ensembles c.1890s but Chubby was a lone wolf with his in his heydey. As far as banjos go? Open-back is the way to go. I really like my old 1890s Buckbee... I use nylgut on it and yum yum yum for the sound and feel. You can hear it on some tracks off of Thanksgiving at my site.

Excellent as usual Todd! Made me feel like dusting off the thumbpick and giving it a try on ukulele. (although I haven't played guitar now for almost a year so I could be a little rusty with it)

I've loved this song for a long time. For some reason, this is the first time I've really listened to the lyrics. This has the makings of a grand opera. No I'm going to go to some AI thing for some nice illustrations of a froggie with a sword and pistol vanquishing the suitors. Miss Mousie is somewhat upset, but then explodes with love and admiration for her Froggy Savior. As it turns out, some of those suitors were unsavory. Froggy and Ms. Mousie live happily ever after with three chilren who are half mouse, half frog -- Mermouse; Mal-adapted for common society Froggy turns out to be a sort of difficult dad. But Ms. Mousie gives their children the love that they need to deal with the crap that they must weather, waiting on their opportunity to exploit their unique capabilities with mixed success. Stay tuned for the sequel!

Thanks so much Derek, thumbpicks are fun on ukes! :) you might like it....i sometimes use one on my smaller ukes and banjolele...... of course i file mine down to where they barely protrude from my thumb....for me they feel so 'unwieldy' and long... lemme know how it goes.... cheers, Todd

Thanks Jake! that's a very cool tid bit, i'd like to get into 5 string banjo a little.....it looks like, from a photo, that the sort of banjo chubby used was open backed and had a smaller scale neck?....is there a name for this sort? I've seen Dan Zanes use one that is similar in size.....most banjos i've seen at the store are really heavy and with a pot or whatever you call it...any input would be appreciated...cheers, todd
