What I find really odd about the Americanisation is that they try to turn this highly comedic semi-satire into a serious, boring movie. The original film has the amazingly overacting Mr Tako, with characters frequently betting on Godzilla vs Kong as if they're professional wrestlers. The Americanisation has really, really boring actors holding monkey skulls talking about how "Kong is a thinking animal" and how small Godzilla's brain is (he's a giant radioactive reptile that realistically shouldn't even be alive at such an old age in the first place, who cares?).

Callum Donnelly While I agree the United Nations scenes are dull and humorless (well, intentionally), I disagree about the US versions being made into a “serious” movie. Plenty of Mr. Tako’s antics remained intact, along with various other humorous bits.

German fan here. I just gotta say that watching this is super weird for me. We got an edited version of the US version here in Germany. I know people tend to dislike or even hate the US music and the additional US scenes. But I just can't hate the US scenes and the music, because I grew up with it. They just feel so nostalgic to me. I also realized that the German cut is a mutated monstrosity of a cut. It has more original scenes than the US version, but still all US scenes (and the music) and yet it doesn't have all the original Japanese scenes. The Blu-ray I own at least gives me the option to watch the movie with the original Ifukube score.

I had seen the American dub all my life, and only saw the original Japanese version a couple years ago. I think the biggest change for me was how long it took Godzilla to appear in the Japanese version, which also meant that in the Japanese version, that sub seemed stuck in that iceberg for like an hour before Godzilla awoke. Of course I knew even before seeing the Japanese version that the music score for the American version was stock soundtrack from old Universal films, most notably Creature From the Black Lagoon. Still, this was a FUN movie in any version, definitely one of the kaiju gems of my childhood.

In the original Farue was suffering from jungle fever. However, the American version had him suffering from his corns. Also in the scene where they are going into the jungle to look for Kong, Farue informs Sakurai of Godzilla's latest rampage. In the American version there is no mention of Godzilla and Farue is talking about his corns. Also, you mentioned the temperature difference in the water can be explained by the fact that being shot in Japan they were using the Celsius scale and 18 degrees Celsius is equivalent to 64 degrees Fahrenheit.

There's several reasons why the American version is terrible, the reporters that narrate the story is unnecessary. Dr Johnson's an idiot saying that Godzilla has not seeing Earth for millions of years and it contradicts the previous Godzilla movies, and also, the dub mispronounces Hokkaido. "Hokkai-ado" Plus, almost all music pieces put in is lazy and doesn't fit in, only a few of Akira Ifukube's music is put in the American version, I know I grew up with it but it's got major flaws.
@bencemolnar42463 жыл бұрын
I think the reason why they say that Godzilla was stayed frozen for millions of years is because Godzilla raids again's american version was marketed as a Dinosaurs rampage troughg Tokyo movie called Gigantis the fire monster,and wasn't a sequel to the original Godzilla.But that doesn't mean that the U.S. version is terrible.

I’ve noticed that Japanese media generally has more filler than American media. Shots tend to linger a bit longer, there’s more small talk and characters sitting around silently contemplating things, and little stuff like a character putting on his shoes just before an important scene. For a very long time, American adaptations like this, Power Rangers, and anime dubs would make a lot of little cuts to give the stories a faster pace. You don’t see that as much anymore because fans are more aware of it now and would rather watch the movie as the creators intended, and it’s cheaper for the distribution companies to just give it to them that way.

Great job! I really love this movie, but haven't seen the Japanese version yet. I'm wondering if I'll agree with your pick here on which version is best. I definitely agree that the American version needed to totally remove the United Nations scenes, those were SUPER annoying and absolutely unnecessary (even mildly insulting to the audience). American movies love to promote the U.N., it's a kind of propaganda, but yeah the fact that the Japanese version doesn't have those really terrible scenes makes me want to check it out now, so thanks! I'm a bit worried about the extra filler scenes like you indicated, but are they really worse than the U.N. scenes? I guess I'll just have to watch it and see...Paper Finz is officially my new favorite Godzilla analyst.

The Japanese version is much more theatrical. What you call filler is characterization. Plus the extended submarine Seahawk sequence creates a growing menace that the characters don’t know is coming and it actually lasts about 24 hour as Godzilla destroys the submarine offscreen. The satire of big business and media is more pronounced in the original too. The is an anti corporate vehicle which adds social commentary. One more thing, the Japanese castle that’s wrecked at the climax isn’t an old one. It’s known as Atami Castle which was built as a tourist attraction only. So when it’s smashed by the two monsters the film suggests commercialism has gone too far to fake Japanese culture itself. Enjoyed the video though. Good job.

The added science scenes are annoying and not-needed, but truth be told the _only thing_ that annoys me going from the original to the dub, is that the dub changes the dialogue to ask if the atomic bomb will be used on either of the creatures. It comes off as a bit insensitive considering that Japan has a strict Anti-Nuke policy, and almost comes off like they're trying to pressure the Japanese into reconsidering it. But maybe I'm going too far into it.

King Kong got stronger from electricity because he was originally going to be a Giant Version of the Frankenstein Monster. Yes, the cuts of the space station show shadows of spacecraft entering the station. As for the music changes in all these American versions, it may have to do with music rights. Music rights in films have always been in contention as to who owns the music; the composer or the film producers. At least Akira Ifukube's music is available on CDs.
