Again watching you experience these songs for the first time is not just entertaining, it lets me *almost* feel like I’m back to hearing them for the first time myself. Forgive the pun but I get to relive those moments vicariously through you. Heh. What blows my mind as a musician is that even those with no musical knowledge can hear the complexity and the intricacies of Tool’s music and those who are musicians and don’t like the genre still give mad props to the masterful musicianship these guys possess. When the right people somehow find each other and come together to make music, there’s nothing like it. Again - welcome to the ride, bro.

I know tool said that, but I have my doubts listening to the song..and yes I bought the album the day it came out so have been listening to this song for 20 years myself aswell. It sounds more like it's about jesus christ to me, but that's a tool song for ya...open for interpretation. It could really be about any "demi god", martyr or religious leader.

Preston, Song isn't about anyone in specific. More about a type of person. A charlatan. A person who speaks out of one side of their mouth while cursing out of the other. Think of your typical televangelist or snake oil salesman type. It's about hypocrites and how they have a lot to say about everything but it's all just noise and blather. The song is largely sarcastic in nature when saying things like "we're gonna miss him"; a sarcastic eulogy for someone who thought they lived and died a hero and an important person when all along they were nothing but a liar and a fool. Much love, Tool is the best! :)

The song is about people who pretend to be leaders of a cause usually for the sake of profit or attention seeking. L Ron Hubbard has been speculated as well as Kurt Cobain and Bill Hicks, although it seems unlikely the band would write such a scathing song about one of their idols - Bill Hicks. The religious themes of the song are most likely metaphorical, though it could be seen as an indictment of biblical scripture and the plausibility of a man who is supposedly also a God. Televangelists are another possibility being the most obvious example of false martyrs/false prophets in the world. Of course most Tool lyrics are vague and mysterious, which fits the band perfectly. Everything from their sound - playing in strange time signatures, to their image - downplaying it to the extreme of never appearing in their own music videos, just serve to make the band more intriguing in my opinion. This is my best guess, though.

Maynard, the vocalist has stated this song is about making your own decisions and not standing on your own soap box each time to accomplish this. Maynard has a deep rooted passion in using Jesus as a metaphor in his lyrics. His entire career started because at a rock show he told some friends the band sucked and he could do better. They promptly told him he couldn’t do it and to prove it. He did a stint in a early glammer band, actually using lyrics to a now popular tool song while with that band in the late 1980’s. Now he is one of the best known vocalist with a unique delivery in the rock industry. He has two side projects that are simply projects to entertain his self id and ego. A Perfect Circle and Puscifer are also lead by the introverted front man that stands behind the band usually in the dark swaying awkwardly to the tempo of the regular 4/4 and 5/4 tempo music which is a tempo more commonly found in the classical music genre. Tool is the all around package for artsy rock music. Each beat holds something different. Each measure a hallway to the subconscious.

i heard you saying on one of your reactions to tool "there is something about how the instrumental makes you feel that i cant put my finger on", i think the thing you need to listen to more is the drumming man, every bit of percussion you hear in tool songs are done live by the drummer (Danny Carry), the thing is its not just drumming, its musical, there is a lot of melody in his playing, he brings things together. Dont get me wrong all the band is top notch lvl musicians, but Danny and Meynard are kinda out of this world. well, although that is a matter of opinion and personal taste... i have always believed the beauty of music is in the ear of the listener. if i HAD choose only one band i would pick Tool over APC.... but only by a thin margin.... he really seems to like some of the more melodic and detailed stuff it seems to me... like, i think he likes the newer songs of Metallica that he listened to more than the older stuff from 'Kill em all'... he really liked songs like Fade to Black, and a lot of the songs that hardcore Metallica fans consider 'the commercial Metallica'. i think he would really like APC, because even though they are a bit more melodic they still have a definite edginess to them as well, and Maynard's voice and lyrics are totally amazing. but i guess we need to leave that up to him eh?
@thehappyscrapper56436 жыл бұрын
I had no idea about APC until long into being a Tool fan.. In my opinion, I feel it is a good idea to stick with Tool for now, allow the band to really dig into your soul, and give yourself time to think on what the band means to you. i understand why you would say that of course. and i cant remember which video/s it was, but he *did* say that he was basically addicted to Tool, and he also said something similar about how Tool songs *have* touched his soul... and how he feels 'pulled into' all of the songs he has heard so far. i mean, he is doing a reaction channel in which he listens to LOTS of different kinds of music, i think he could appreciate APC by now. my *humble* opinion of course. i am not trying to be a music guru or anything.

My brother brought this channel to my attention. I'm always happy to see new fans. To answer your question concerning lyrics of Tool songs. Part of what makes Tool so good is that everyone can have different interpretations of their lyrics yet support them with reasonable evidence. For example, this song, "Eulogy" is just that. A Eulogy of someone is almost always exaggerations of how great the individual was yet the person giving the eulogy (especially a preacher or someone paid to do the speech) has no idea who the person was truly. They might sprinkle in some personal facts of the individual or straight up lie as anyone that's been to multiple wakes can attest to. Ultimately, it's a criticism of the very formulaic process of eulogys. Where they really just change the person's name from eulogy to eulogy. It is that criticism that this song might be really highlighting. In addition, it can be reference to how people in general speak of the dead in Eulogy's. That they present the deceased as a Messiah/martyr and seemingly perfect which is the furthest thing from the truth no matter who it is. But, this interpretation I presented is just that. An interpretation of the lyrics in most general/literal way possible that I can see. As such, that's part of what makes Tool songs so thought provocative. Everyone can derive something that uniquely speaks to them .
@SDcharge2k126 жыл бұрын
Preston brother you NEEEEEEEEED to do a reaction to AEnema you will absolutely love it and will be a top 5 Tool song of yours I can almost guarantee it! It’s A song that they made for and dedicated to Bill Hicks after he passed away. If you know bill hicks (all time great comedian) you’d know he basically hated what society has become and this song is basically begging for a cataclysmic Event to “flush it all away”. Anyways thanks for the great Vids Botha I have really enjoyed watching your birth as a new Tool fan and when they go on tour this summer for the new album you REALLY NEED TO SEE THEM LIVE! Honestly I’ve never seen a better band live in my life and I’m not fan boyin either I’m dead serious these guys are protectionists in everything they do so you can only imagine. The light shows and visual effects are amazing since guitarist Adam Jones is a effects master who even did the effects for the original Jurassic park! Nine inch nails to listen to: The day the whole world went away, Wish, Gave up, deep, head like a hole, Hurt, we're in this together. There are so many more. Please people comment and like. Let's get this going.

cmacnchz1 yes, tapeworm didn’t last long, but MJK released the song ‘Potions’ on a Puscifer album. Read all the details here: www.nin.wiki/Potions

arianaz4 The song "passive" by APC was originally "Vacant" performed by Tapeworm. Maybe it was the band name that did not help the project get off the ground. Not sure. Regardless, Passive is an amazing song! Potions is good too!

I love your reactions. Especially to Tool. They are my all time favorite band. You’re one of the only people I’ve met that appreciate them the way I do. On a different topic a while ago you were looking for more Queen songs. Innuendo is great. If you like songs that switch it up nearly any song on the Queen II album will do.

Probably my favorite and arguably the best Tool song. I was always under the impression it was about L. Ron Hubbard, but it is likely a broader message about religion in general, or maybe even broader yet about not being a follower. "Think for yourself question authority."

What a song. It really shows off the talent of each individual. From singer to guitar bass and drums. But what a fuckin set of vocals. One of the best. Hard to believe they found him screaming at his landlord over back rent. Now look at him. Successful as hell and one of the best. Rock on TOOL 🤘
@caseypearce90786 жыл бұрын
The song has obvious (at least to me) religious overtones and Maynard is known to have a general dislike for organized religion. So it may not necessarily be aimed at one individual, but more at institutions.

The song is about late stand up comedian Bill Hicks. He was friends of the band, he lost his battle with cancer and passed away before they recorded the AEnima album so the album as a whole is dedicated to him in general. The final track on the album is called "Third Eye" and opens with samples of a few of Bill's stand up bits.
@gabedeane4146 жыл бұрын
Nice to see a Eulogy reaction. My personal favorite. The Hicks theory is absurd. Hicks was an inspiration. I think the LHub theory comes from a comment made by Carey. And Jesus was used as an analogy. Nah! I don't care what they have said or what they may have walked back. This song will always be about Jesus to me. He slots into every aspect of this song where the others just don't. For someone like me .....who has never been baptised....but brought up in overtly Christian world.....the idea of someone who may or may not have even existed dying for me is offensive. Maynard comes off as someone who truly despises organized thought. To the point he's even disgusted with his own fans. How else do you explain Pucifer? Eulogy is anti organized thought, anti Christian and anti Martyrdom. Jump down Get off your fucking cross We need this fucking space To nail the next fool Martyr! Tool can be so lyrically vague that when they are literal......Tool fans wouldn't even know the difference

Exactly what a non believer would see in this song and in the world. If you don't see the truth you will never understand the truth. You can go around life believing you are brilliant because you are not one of those fools who believes but in that arrogance you will never consider that what you see in all your brilliance and worldly backing of your disbelief is that the true fool is the one who believes that all of this world, universe, human body, etc. made perfectly that we know and don't know about did not just pop into existence so that you and your brilliance could grace this world with your self-centered presence. The fool minimizes everything to himself. Now there are many people in this world who arrogantly believe they are Jesus/God, the Pope for one, who believe they belong on a cross and there are also many martyrs also so try thinking outside of your self-centered foolishness.

This song is about Bill Hicks. They were close friends with the young comedian who died of cancer. Some of his stand up act can be heard at the beginning of Third Eye (if that’s the name of the song) on Aenema. Bill Hicks’ likeness is also drawn inside the cover art of the album. He looks like a weird doctor of some sort examining a deformed patient.

Lead singers other band A Perfect Circle is a great choice to react to. Judith is their most popular song and was a radio hit in the early 2000s. On a related note, A Perfect Circles rhythm guitarist is James Iha, the former lead guitarist for The Smashing Pumpkins, a very popular rock band from the 90's, which I would love to see you react to as well.
