Keep the nobles busy and the King knew where they were. Much harder to conspire against the throne if they were fighting over HIS socks.

Not really. The king was really under the control of the system in place. I've read that when Marie Antoinette married and saw all this rigmarole, she was flabbergasted by it and tried to change at least some of it, but really couldn't. You'd think the monarch could do that, but look at Japan's monarchy. They act like the emperor is a practically a god there, yet it's the Imperial Household Agency that makes a lot of the rules the monarch has to follow.
@dan_38
@dan_38 4 ай бұрын
@istn9478 it's a bit of both, honestly. It would show the nobles who was jn charge by having them do these ceremonial practices, but this usually only works if the king was a tyrant like personality ala Louis 14th, of which 15 and 16 never could match up with. Also, it did allow nobles to be pompous over they direct access to the king, but only if the king wanted them to speak or to hear them at all. As is, it was a decent stopgap on rich people having too much control amongst each other

The funny thing is that they actually are showing a sped up condensed version of this. There were nobles whose titles where things like the one who hands the kind his socks or shirt... the dressing took far longer than all this.

In Buckingham Palace in the 1830s there was one group of servants to wash the inside of windows and one to wash the outside. When Queen Victoria asked for a fire in her bedroom, the servant who built it was not allowed to light it as that was someone elses job!

I mean in my office one company washes the inside windows and another does the outside windows. One company provides the milk delivery to each floor, a different one does the tea and coffee. One company supplies the cleaning products, a different one supplies the cleaners. It's just how big buildings and institutions tend to operate due to contracts etc, I think Victoria found it unusual because unlike previous monarchs she and Albert hadn't grown up in the the royal residence so they weren't used to it

Urine tasting and testing, known as uroscopy, was once a common diagnostic tool for early physicians. It came late to the West (late 1600's) but was practiced around the ancient world and kept in practice by the universities of the Caliphate during Europe's scientific "dark age".

I'll always laugh when I see the fireplace to the left of the bed; during my first visit to Versailles way back in 2007, I leaned on it and a docent scolded me .. but she was very kind about it saying "I know you want to look handsome near the mantel but this is a museum!" lol ... Ironically in 2007 Versailles didn't impress me much however, on my following visits it grew to due to major restoration work. In June of 2022 I stayed in the hotel attached to the Palace and though it was very nice, I have to admit at night it was somewhat creepy..
@Napp28
@Napp28 3 ай бұрын
As far as I know, the hotel is what used to be the apartment of the Duke du Burgundy. It was purchased and connected to the main Chateau by Louis XV. In 2022, I stayed there for two nights (June 6-8th) in a room that was 'probably' a servants quarter back in the 18th century. My room was very nice and faced the Orangerie on the 2nd floor. On my first night I had trouble sleeping (nothing new) but, constantly felt as if there was another person following me every time I had to use the washroom which was down a small hallway from the bedroom. On my 2nd night I was sitting up in bed (about 1am) when all of a sudden the bedroom door slammed shut! Though no windows were opened I told myself it was wind/air etc. Then around 3 am, I went to the washroom and as I was walking back to the bedroom the trash-can in the washroom was violently kicked across the room making a LOUD crashing noise! At that sound I ran soooo fast towards the bedroom & turned on every light .... I knew 100% that the trash-can had no reason to fall or fly across the floor cause I just left the washroom and everything was normal. The morning after, sure enough, the trash-can in the washroom was toppled over on the floor on the opposite side of the room!!! As grand as it was, I knew that the door slamming and the trash-can flying over were without a physical cause. The place was HAUNTED....!!!!@@PanchCador

The thing that made an impression on me, was how all the rooms were connected without benefit of the hallway.
@Napp28
@Napp28 2 ай бұрын
@boxsterman77 that is a very good observation. In architecture this system is known as an 'enfilad' where each room is directly connected to the next by a series of doors which are usually aligned with each other. In Versailles when you stand at the end of one of the wings and look down the enfilad the effect is almost theatrical (as they appear smaller in the distance). Of all the times I've spoken to ppl about Versailles; you're the first person to mention this & it is such a cool feature of the Château

That'll be your opinion, but I'll confess anyone could still make an English dub if possible. I know if they tried voiceover, it'll be likely for the voices to never connect with the lip synchronizarion. And if they were to remake the movie and hire English-speaking actors to replace the original French-speaking actors, it could be more work unless the producer decides to plan when to handle it by option (it's up to him; I think the producer is a male).

Louis XIV took a bath only twice in his all life. His mistress were allowed to bring scented napkins with them, when they were together in bed. And, obviously, Louis XIV wasn't the only one. Basically, taking a regular bath was considered a risk. However, people made it until the current mind changed and having a bath with regularity was accepted.

I have to question this statement: Louis XIV, like all members of the Royal family, had bathrooms in their private apartments, complete with tubs and water-heaters. In fact, you can tour Versailles and see the tub for yourself.

@@user-ku6tr4vd6z well, what I'm saying is written in more than one article about the health and hygiene of Louis XIV. I'm not myself an expert in this field; I mean, it's not my job. It's true what you say: there were those magnificent salles de bain for the king and his mistress. But as well there are the chronicles of his physicians describing very carefully what, when and how often the king was cleaning himself. You know what a panier is ? Is a structure that gives a certain shape to the women clothes. So well, at those panier were hanging petit sachets de lavande in order to give a better scent under those very heavy gowns. You know why traditionally weddings are celebrated between May and June ? Because that was the time of the year when the major of people were taking a bath. At least, this what I've been reading.

It seems foolish but it worked. It kept the nobility fighting for the smallest things, reaffirmed his authority, and kept the court tightly organized. They were to busy fighting and scheming who would get to help him put on his clothes to think about his throne.

@@cioccolateriaveneziana Also, a few generations before the court was often touring from palaces to palaces and bringing their furnitures with them. For example, Charles X did a great "tour de France" and the procession of royal family, courtisants, workers, animals and furnitures was so long and slow that the last one had not left Paris while the first (who came a bit before the king to prepare) were already in the south of France!) They kept movies because "the plague was chasing us way" while well... they were the one spreading the plague across the country.

Charles IX, I suppose. Yes, the rulers had to move around quite often. In German, there is a lovely concoction, "Reisekaisertum". The ruler had to be seen in person in various parts of the country. Basically, Louis XIV broke with the tradition and it became more of a lifestyle, with hunting lodges etc. He was still moving but basically just around Paris. @@SuperLn1991

@@saitokurihara9748There was a point to it. All the people in the room are either powerful nobles, royalty or high ranking clergy, and yet all of them have to stand there and wait, or perform tedious tasks like putting on the king's wig. It's a show of power - "you might be rich and have titles, but you still have to quietly wait for me to dress." Plus, since the roles were prestigious, it kept the nobles fighting each other, and not rebelling against the king. Still, it must have been tedious as hell to sit through.
