Now imagine if this was part of a D&D campaign and after the King is dressed, the royal armorers then have to *additionally* put on a fancy suit of +2 gold Full Plate armor along with every Magic Item he has, magic cloak, amulets, Bracers of Armor, greatsword and sheath, shield...

It does look funny to us, and human excesses did of course abound in church and state, but defined structures and rituals actually provided powerful unity. The loftiest prelates and princes right to the lowliest peasants knew what the society was and, strangely perhaps, reinforced it. It is the opposite of our time in which institutions fade before individuals filling our minds with electronic media beyond our control. We will see how the new way works out for our collective interest.

Yirmisekiz Mehmed Çelebi Efendi (ca. 1670-1732), also Mehmed Efendi (sometimes spelled Mehemet Effendi in France), was an Ottoman statesman who was delegated as ambassador by the Sultan Ahmed III to Louis XV's France in 1720. He is remembered for his account of his embassy mission (a sefâretnâme, "book of embassy"). It is a really interesting work. During this official visit the King of France was only 10 years old. The comments of the ambassador of Ottoman Empire about the king and their second meeting is very entertaining.

The Sun King Louis XIV instituted those absurd protocols. It was to keep the aristocracy in check, keep them from rebelling.
