IR Individual Runner Carburetion on American V8s are extremely rare and extremely tedious to nail down the perfect tune on. Part of that is that none ever saw production and the other part is that when finally so-nailed no amount of cam overlap will cause them to rump-rump idle. Dummies like that, you know.

Great vid. I am enthused at the opportunity to learn your strict tuning methods for economy with these otherwise wild setups and breaking the myth about fi being so superior. Nothing beats a 1050 for tune ability for economy, drive ability, or performance. Mr Campbell, designed them that way.

I suppose carburators will always be misunderstood and if you're a guy who truly understands them you'll always seen like a magician to most people. But it really truly is simple once you learn how they work. I learned the "secret" that's not a secret in aircraft mechanics school in 1990, I'll never forget the day I suddenly had the forehead slap moment in class and I've been a "carb tuning magician" ever since. I'm not special, I just figured it out!

Thanks for the schooling on Dominators, I knew one to see it, but that was the extent of my knowledge. The vintage one is very cool. I think I remember seeing a small cluster of 4 chrome plated velocity stacks being used by some guys on the early carbs, I’ve no idea of the value, useful or just gingerbread.

Wow. I didn't realize that you swapped newer models into use and kept those retro beasts for something else. Someone spent a lot of time finishing and shaping those venturis, they're a work of art. The long boosters and the tall outer venturi sure looks like it would lend itself to IR use, maybe to contain the standoff. They look just like the long boosters and 'chokes' of a Weber DCOE but vertical. You made the right call saving those old pieces of history and using a modern, more adjustable off-the-shelf unit. Plus it made a very good video!

great vid. please, please run the vintage carbs on the lower manifold as Independent Runner at the track or on a chassis dyno. i agree wholeheartedly about not modifying them. they are historic artifacts. just disassemble them and clean and dry them out after use. no harm no foul. to my knowledge it would be the only vintage dominator IR testing on youtube.

Andy, I know you really love vintage stuff and what you did with the last iteration of Casper truly impressed me. Truthfully you were getting better fuel economy with Casper than I do with a stock 2004 F150. So I have to ask why you stay away from overdrive trannys?

Funny you should mention that my Atari Pong still woks fine. That said those Carbs were meant for one thing only and that is going fast in a straight line. When Dominators were run in NASCAR they were notorious for running rich and fouling plugs especially at super speedways to the point teams would change spark plugs
@moparnut6286
@moparnut6286 2 жыл бұрын
@@gullreefclub your Atari pong has never had to live in an engine bay....or under a dash exposed to moisture heat cold....lol😂 it's a dead simple computer.... Try 40 to 60 computer modules of today's cars....hell most pc's don't live more than six years....and their always obsolete when you buy them. But carbs in the right hands are a thing of beauty that you can be passed on to someone else not many things today will last 10 or more yrs.... And yeah I have a Sony trinitron going on 40 yrs still works perfect in a world of planned obsolescence!😥
@lasskinn474
@lasskinn474 2 жыл бұрын
Theres 50y old computers that work. They tend to be pretty big though, depending what you call a computer. Microprocessors and home computers were more of a 70s thing. Plenty of 50y old integrated circuits still working though. There are hobbyists for them, it's interesting. Theres plenty of 40 year old embedded systems that still manage to work, also 40 year old computers tend to not be that complicated to fix(theres a lot more of them than 70s computers) Also the 50 year old carb here would've needed gasketa and stuff replaced if it were in an engine bay and used for 50 years and was meant to be used for 2 seasons or so. Vintage computers aren't that different of a hobby than vintage cars, tend to be not so useful for daily productive use though but you have to understand that right now its more like prewar cars would've been in the 70s(not like 50s/60s because the prices are going up like bonkers, a commodore pet is like 1k plus dollars now while at one point you could've had that stuff for free.
@moparnut6286
@moparnut6286 2 жыл бұрын
@@lasskinn474 I tend to agree with most of what you said....but there plenty of pre war cars that have been upgraded and can serve a purpose as in racing or even a daily driver..... The fault with computers is there over complicated development and throw away nature and there the seeds of obsolescence are planted in modern cars. No user serviceable parts inside! Refer service to qualified personnel only! True prophecy that!!!😁👍
