King of New York was meant to bring out the THEME of the game. In King of Tokyo, it was monsters fighting monsters, the city was only a game mechanic. In King of New York, the city is ALIVE, you smash buildings, the army fights you, and and thus more engagning...I enjoy the chaos that comes with that. I felt more like I was rampaging through a city instead of just fighting other monsters.....Tokyo is streamlined yes, I love it, but New York just has more atmosphere.

I agree 100%, King of Tokyo will always be King, and if I'm looking to add complexity I throw in the power-up cards from the Panda expansion. There's nothing wrong with King of New York, it just doesn't have the magic and takes too long to teach. And as a New Yorker it hurts to say that :-P.

Too long to teach? I've played with various gaming groups that have never played KoT and they understood KoNY no problem. I must be a good teacher. Great game, really good fun, easy to teach and easy for new gamers to understand.

I played this with my sister just this very night, we were both learning and she enjoyed herself oh, there were a few hiccups because our Pace was a bit quick but we both had a blast, coincidentally she kicked my ass up and down the entirety of New York.

The only reason he doesn't like King of New York is because his city is getting destroyed.

This seems more 2 player friendly than Tokyo, since there some more things to do other than bash each other.

I had the exact same reaction Dan. I was really looking forward to this one. Thought I wanted it. After first play, thought it was better. After second play, thought it ruined it by being too slow and fiddly. I've got plenty of games for that kind of thing, King of Tokyo is just so fun and easy to teach. The perfect game for me would be if they released the King of Tokyo dice with the stars instead of the 1,2,3, which just unnecessarily complicates things.

I'm hoping you can answer a question regarding ties. I had 1 health left and my remaining opponent had 5. I rolled 5 attacks and 1 army attack (skull). There was an army unit in my borough so I took the damage and he took 5 hits. I didn't survive the end of my turn so died, does that mean my opponent won even if I resolved the attack dice first?

Every group I have played with has not liked KoNY, I am glad to finally have a review say something is missing or broken, even though it should be better than KoT. I have noticed that the cards play a much smaller role in the game with about three or less being the most any monster has. I also noticed that the board finished the game a few times. I do like that it is harder to turtle in KoNY. I still have mixed feelings about this one.

Brett Petersen I feel KoT also suffers from the problem where too few Power cards can come into play.

Great review. I've had the game for awhile and it definitely takes people a bit longer to grok it than Tokyo. However I like that it gives players more strategic avenues than the original even if its a bit trickier to teach and learn. Tokyo can get a bit too brain dead whereas the health pickups and military units add nice levels of depth that give the game more staying power in my book. Still rough that it's a knock out game but oh well.

It's really strange, I too like everything they added to King of New York, and yet King of Tokyo is just more fun IMHO. I would also have to say that the guys I game with are always up for a game Tokyo, but New York always seems to generate a slight hesitancy for some reason. I think this is a classic example of more being less; both are great games, but Tokyo just seems to be more popular,

The mechanics and concept of New York make me think that's what the franchise wanted to be from the beginning. But what everyone really wants to do in a game like this is just play the game like Tokyo.

Great review, Dan! I think your analysis is spot on (!) and you give a really fair and balanced overview to KoNY that I think provides the gamers looking for that next level with the same flavor a reason to buy it. I only have KoT (and all expansions, both Panda and Halloween). If I bought KoNY could I add the additional characters to KoT for a bigger selection and vice versa? This question is for anybody. Thanks!

I don't have KoT or KoNY, so I might be mistaken. But I have played both and as far as I remember you could use the charakters from KoT in KoNY and vice versa.

Can I use KoT first edition monsters with KoNY right out of the box? I live in Staten Island so I'd love to get KoNY eventually, but the monster art just doesn't appeal to me as much as from KoT first edition.

I've had the original 'Tokyo' + both expansions and I've combined those characters into King of New York. This is just so you can still utilize the 'evolutions' from the old game, but play with the new board and rules. Once the new expansions for 'New York' come out, I think I'll combine both games into one.

Honest review. KOT is funny because is immediate, if you look for more depth there are better games around.

I just bought KoNY a few weeks ago having never played KoT so I can't compare there. I really like KoNY but after a few games I noticed it was a bit easy to win in Manhattan. The last game my friend went to Manhattan and stayed there the whole game and won quickly, buying up cards and finding other ways to heal. I didn't roll enough ouchies or claws to attack him with and it was a pretty short game. Because he was in Manhattan he gained all kinds of energy and bought all the good cards. Is this normal for KoNY?
@Serpentotia
@Serpentotia 9 жыл бұрын
then8mac How many players were in your game? Because it isn't totally balanced when it's down to 2 players. KoT is the same in that respect. With 3-4 players, surviving a round in Tokyo/Manhattan is more of an achievement, because you've lasted 2-3 players who rolled punches, so staying in is more of a risk. The more players in the game, the higher the chance that one player rolls 3+ punches, and the more likely it is that the monster(s) in Tokyo/Manhattan will not be able to stay there till their next turn. Usually in larger games, I've found that because of the damage factor, it isn't wise to stay in Tokyo/Manhattan for more than a couple of rounds. In the last game I played of KoNY (6 player), I only managed to get to Upper Manhattan because we were all playing VERY passively, and were dealt more damage by the military, than by each other. Otherwise, monsters tend to quit by the time they get to Middle Manhattan.

then8mac Yes I ran into this same problem. I was in Manhattan, nobody attacked me and I cleaned up and won by the time I was ready to leave.

Serpentotia We played 3 players. I have since played it again with 5 players and it was more balanced with players having to move out of Manhattan several times in the game and it lasted longer. It was better with 5 players, everyone having to scrape for health to see who could survive the longest. We were able to get to more cards and have a good game. Would recommend it with 4 or 5 players. The only downside was one player was taken out fairly early because he almost never rolled hearts, and he had to wait awhile while the rest of us played on.

I agree Dan, KoNY seemed a little just a little slower, more complicated & possibly confusing, but only slightly.
