Yes... so many dark and dreamy lyrics. It's like a fog rolls in on Sting's consciousness and all sorts of off kilter and disturbing visual images pour out, that he somehow makes the connection to his soul. Must have been a rough day for Sting's soul.

Yes, vivid imagery -- not just this line, but nearly all of them. The litany of nature's brutality exemplifies (and is analogous of) our own human sufferings, from the dead salmon frozen in the waterfall to the red fox torn by the huntsman's pack. This tune called for a further, in-depth review of the lyrics.

Not mistimed. It's an AND-one beat to anticipate going into the song. Good guitar soloists will often enter before the one, often a few beats. Naturally a drumming genius like Copeland rarely settles for a boring intro. Many of his intros are deceptive about WHERE the one is, though it is very clear here.

@@ballyastrocade5672 Yea but I don't think that's what off-time really means either. When I hear people talk about being off-time its typically in a situation where you're playing between standard counts. So if you're counting 16ths "1 e & a 2 e & a...etc" it'd be like coming in after the 'a' but before the 3. But he's just coming in on the & as a pick up. So I wouldn't really describe it as off-time.

Mmm. One thing I like about A&A is they have said multiple times "how does this song do what they are trying to do?" When the Police ended they were not a spent force. Rather, they could not stand working together. Mostly Sting and Copeland. Sting headed a different direction and ignored commercial success. Who needs to with his name? So jazz and songs for the songs' sake. A rotating cast of session musicians. Statements on human rights. (Up there with Gabriel on that.) No more rock to please the masses. If you look at the lyrics, songwriting, musicianship, production etc they are just as good as the Police. Just zero compromise with the commercial demands. So I'd just call it a different career. Police fans were disappointed. Fans of general music saw something equally as good, just very different.

They just don't compose songs like this anymore. The use of sound, silence, changing rhythms and the lyrics make a totally immersive listening experience. The lyrics of this song are also quite deep and expressive. They really give a deeper understanding of the songs purpose. I do miss the way you used to dive into the lyrics of songs. As always though great reaction guys. Stay safe and peeeeace ouuuttt.

My favorite song on Synchronicity, and one of my favorites of theirs period. Sting used to do a scorching version of this on his solo tours with Dominic Miller just going berzerk on the guitar solo, and Lady Gaga did an epic cover at Sting's birthday celebration.

I was a little kid when new songs by The Beatles would come on the radio for the first time, and even as a little kid I remember thinking, "They've done it again, this one might be even better than the last one." Without wanting to directly compare the two bands, suffice to say, I had a similar experience 10 years later with The Police. Throughout the late 70s and into the early 80s, it was one banger after another. They may not have been S Tier like The Beatles, but plenty of them were A+. Love your work, gentlemen.

I had the good fortune to see the Police live in 1982 during Ghost in the Machine tour. The show was phenomenal. From Stewart's incredible drums with his snappy snare, to Andy's amazing chords and Stings voice plus his underrated bass. But one thing I've never experienced during a live concert except for this show was the very last note played, was Sting playing an open low E and then the engineers cranked the volume soo loud, that I could literally watch the duct work in the ceiling moving. Overall, an incredible band.

Murder by Numbers off this album is great. Happy to watch you all explore more of the Police. They are consistently fantastic. Bring on the Night, Bed’s Too Big Without You, Next to You, So Lonely, Walking on the Moon… and too many other bangers to mention!

Stewart once said in an interview that he only had an hour or two to lay the drums down. What he played at that time is what was used. The guitars and other instruments used were changed and modified constantly. If he would have played at a different time later in the day or the next day, the drum pattern would have/could have been completely different.

Right there at Shea Stadium for this concert tour back in August of 1983, that one show drew the biggest crowd (67,000) for this tour in the US, great song, great album… their best IMO!

The story goes like this: Sting and Trudy were sitting on the beach and she had just read an article in a magazine about sunspots. She said, "There's a little black spot on the sun today." And Sting replied, "That's my soul up there". According to Sting, Trudy just rolled her eyes and said, "Oh dear, the King of Pain." And thus a song was born.

I love that you guys are digging The Police. Driven To Tears (1980) Invisible Sun (1981) Wrapped Around Your Finger (1983) I hope one day you even go deeper in their catalog because they have some killer songs outside of the hits. They created music that sounded like no one else. It’s a shame they only have 5 albums. I remember as a teen back then being so desperate to find songs they left off albums. I would seek out 45 records that had the hit on one side and the b-side song was usually something unreleased. Absolute gems.

This song, this great song, illustrates something I’ve felt for years from the perspective of working at ER registration. I see SO much pain and anxiety in young young people, suicidal at 6!! We see too too much pain today, decades ago we did not know of every disaster, natural or man made, murder and mayhem that happened in another country did not fill our minds. I’m an optimist and a happy person most of the time. But I really must disconnect more often now. There is so much pain in the world and always has been but I don’t think we are built to handle so much. Please watch out for the young people in your lives. They see a lot more than we ever did and it overwhelms many with feelings of helplessness and despair.

The Call and Response format gives it a liturgical feel which I never thought about back then. It still feels fresh to me even though it's my Quit Smoking Song from back in the day. "There's a little black spot on my lungs today..." Sang it to myself every time I opened a new pack.
