Note: Muang can mean a city, capital or center city which was the center of government, city-state, kingdom, depending on what the context is.
Historians still have 7 differing views regarding the origin and background of King Oo-Tong because there is not enough evidence to point to it undoubtedly. The most reasonable way is that King Oo-Tong would probably be King Chaya Warman the ninth of the Khom Empire who led the Khom or Siam people of the ruling class to flee from Muang Praa Nakhon when the rebellion by slaves broke out in Buddhist Era of 1879 by reason of the following:
1. After King Oo-Tong had undergone the coronation ascending the throne of Ayutthaya, he still spoke Khom, designated the Khom as the official language used in all the public administration. This indicated that he had been speaking, writing, reading, and listening to Khom language for a very long time until he became accustomed to it. The king and the ruling class communicated with each other in Khom language. As for people under the rule, they spoke language of their own ethnic groups.
2. When King Oo-Tong was undergoing the coronation ascending the throne of Ayutthaya in Buddhist Era of 1893, he was granted the name "Som Dej Praa Rama Tib Bodi the first" according to the Tewa Racha regime of the Khom Empire because the word "Rama" means an avatar of the Narai deity being in human form in the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism.
3. The coronation of King Oo-Tong was performed by a Brahman according to the Khom’s tradition in all respects.
4. The Ayutthaya Kingdom was governed in an absolute monarchy and centralization of power according to the Khom’s tradition.
5. King Oo-Tong had 1 queen and 4 secondary wives for the 4 fundamental directions (North, South, East, West) according to the Khom’s tradition.
6. After King Oo-Tong had ascended the throne of Ayutthaya Kingdom, he was able to assign Som Dej Praa Ra Mae Suan, his eldest son, to reign over Muang La Wo without anyone’s resistance which implied that he must have been the Khom king who had power over Muang La Wo.
7. King Oo-Tong must have been a king who reigned over a large and powerful kingdom, such as the Khom Empire of Praa Nakhon or the Khom Kingdom of La Wo, otherwise King Khun Luang Pho Ngua, who was very good at fighting and reigning over Su Paana Poom Kingdom which was also very powerful, would not allow his sister to be King Oo-Tong’s wife.
8. People of the ruling class serving in Muang Praa Nakhon must have been mostly Siam people because Muang “Siam Rath”, which was the home of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and many other important religious places, was meant “territory of Siam” in Thai language, but later the Khmer changed the name from “Siam Rath” to “Siem Reap”, which was meant “Siam was completely defeated” in Khmer language.
9. All military officials who followed King Chaya Warman the ninth fleeing from Muang Praa Nakhon would probably be used as the main labor force to assist the construction experts in constructing the new capital without moving people of Muang La Wo to be labor force in the construction. If Muang La Wo was already deserted due to its people being moved down to Ayutthaya, how could Som Dej Praa Ra Me Suan reign over it?
10. Several Khom-styled Prangs were constructed in the early Ayutthaya Kingdom indicating that the first king of Ayutthaya Kingdom must have been derived from the Khom Empire.
11. King Chaya Warman the ninth was helped by the King of Su Paana Poom Kingdom to live temporarily in the area of old, deserted Muang Oo-Tong which was then under Su Paana Poom Kingdom. Thus, common people called him “Praa Jao Oo-Tong” meaning “King Oo-Tong” due to seeing that he was from Muang Oo-Tong.
