Reminds me of some videos i saw of a japanese "medieval" weapons expert trying to use european medieval weapons and being surprisingly good at it, and the people in the HEMA community (historical european martial arts, aka not just larping but actually using real weapons in sparring matches and learning real old techniques) on youtube reacted to lots of his videos saying he was doing by pure instincts lots of advanced techniques just by knowing how their equivalents work with japanese weapons.

I know I'm a bit late, but for the DI punish I like SPD in the corner for damage, or if you aren't in the corner Russian suplex for oki. The follow up to Russian suplex is DR meaty knee knee to either combo or get plus frames on block, DR medium SPD for damage, or DR block to bait a reversal. Also the oki for 3 throw is dash forward and meaty medium punch which will be meaty enough to hit confirm true combo into the rest of the target combo, dash forward into Russian suplex for the same oki as before (on back role it becomes Siberian express so if it isn't a punish counter you should do the OD version to cover both options) or dash forward block to bait a reversal. Basically the strike/throw/block rps on oki.

I will say, if your idea of character difficulty is memorizing three semi-situational long combo strings then yes, grapplers are brain dead. Personally I think that is brain dead, I see a shoto player thinking they're a genius because they have a 42 hit combo complain about doing only slightly more damage than a grab when the grab was a guess / prediction or risky empty jump while their 42 hit lab combo someone else came up with started from the safest quarter screen down poke that's almost impossible to punish unless it's Tuesday in a leap year and the moon happens to be full.
