One crazy thing I also find is that Richard III was Catholic. And if you remembered, Henry the VIII divorce led to the split from the Vatican, becoming the Church of England. So it was also a long time since the UK buried a Catholic royal as well. The fact they gave him a reburial with so many factors is amazing. From finding his bones to having a descendant give his DNA and make the casket. As well to see that one lookalike and finding documents on royal reburials. It's very heart touching to see this reburials. RIP to Richard III.

@@brucekilby9957 That is inaccurate... he was found because of a campaign to find him by the founder of a society dedicated to him who found the location, did the research and raised money with the local university to do a little digging, he was missing his feet and part of his left tibia but we don't know why or when though you are right likely in the mid to late 1800's workman could of destroyed them when building an outhouse above the grave (we will never know if that is what happened though) , he wasn't buried sideways, he had a small funeral service at the time of course but it would of been very small and discrete under the circumstances. search for 'the king in the car park' documentary and you can see everything from the first trench being dug through the entire process to the DNA results :)

This state reburial of Richard was according to the rites of the official state religion, and took place in the Established Church's cathedral. To have done less would have been to have disrespected and implicitly undermined his legitimate title as a true state ruler (as the Tudors tried to do). In that sense this funeral was as much about the legitimation and acknowledgement of Richard's right to the crown, something his successor, Henry VII, had deliberately denied him. It's almost a sure bet that Richard, who was quite obsessed with the legitimisation of the Yorkist claim to the throne, would have been the first to have insisted on state Church acknowledgement. The Queen, who is not related to Richard and whose presence would've been a massive and unnecessary distraction from the man himself, was represented by Sophie Wessex; and when royals are present at events etc, the National Anthem is sung. The coffin was specially made by the Canadian craftsman, Ibsen, who is Richard's nephew, 17th generation, from Richard's sister's side, and is quite literally the last of the Plantagenants. Cumberbatch is a (very) distant cousin of the king. The argument that Richard should've been buried at York will probably always rumble on. He was the last Yorkist king, but his pre-regnal title was Duke of Gloucester. But undoubtedly he loved York, and that whole Northern province he formerly governed as President of the Council.

People who say he should have an RC funeral are missing the point. He already had one (albeit a brief ceremony) and there were also RC elements incorporated into the reburial. Who decided not to give him a Catholic burial? They ignored history! What a poor decision.

This is how we bury a brave king. Shameful. Where are the horses, soldiers. He died fighting on the battle field. Poor show Britain

Well done. He was called a hunchback and denigrated by history ... even by Shakespeare. Now researching who took over after Richard.

Shakespeare worked for Tudor and he's not a historian. So he isnt a credible source

If there is anything that should really be taken away from this story of the reburial of a legendary king who died bravely fighting in a civil war where thousands were killed, it's this: it took millennia, and untold lives upon lives for the British people to form a system of government and alliance of disparate peoples to ensure that countless lives would no longer be sacrificed at the altar of war and famine in order for any change in society or law to take hold. So for example, when the British people - primarily the English people - decided (wrongly, in my opinion) en masse to leave the European Union, it was a decision that was sustained by law and tradition developed over time; through the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and untold thousands of lives, both of soldiers and of innocents. It was their decision to make, and with the story behind this brave man is the story of a day when it would not have been so. Those who wax eloquent for a time when politicians were more like Richard III are nostalgic for a time when bloodshed was the norm, not the extreme or necessarily illegal. This is so important to take away, as British law became the template for so many British colonies, including America, where representative democracy and co-equal branches of government, were the offspring of this British system and culture of laws and traditions, not a reaction to it (at least, not in the long-term, though it seemed so at the time). In the Middle East, in Russia, in many Eastern European countries; even in France, Germany and Spain, civil wars and the forceful overthrow of rulers continued to abound well into the 20th century; they are still learning the lessons of pragmatic and collective governing that the British endured so much and sacrificed so much to finally learn and develop. May the English people never forget their legacy, or as Robyn McKinley's version of Robin Hood, then ruled by another Plantaganet king, said to a noble ally whose lands he saved: "Only promise: that which we saved, you shall keep. And hold."

God was with England this day to bless Richard the third. We Anglicans, a historical enemy to the Catholic Richard, has shown our respect to Richard. And may he rest in peace. Requiescat in Pace. May God bless Richard amen 🙏🏻 as a Anglican I'm glad we respected him and gave him burial. And have not judged him a catholic but a Christian who died at Bosworth. May God watch over him these days. Amen 🙏🏻

But where do you Anglicans fit in? The man was buried in full requiem Catholic Mass in Latin too in the alter of that church of his day which became a parking lot and you Generation of wicked vole Henry VIII of stolen crown come and speak such utter drivel.... Disgrace... Anglicanism just forcing but nothing special about you at all.

You weren't enemy of Richard because of Catholicism at that time :D
I respect your reply but Richard should have been given a catholic burial in a catholic church. That was never going to happen because the established Church of England has far too much influence in English Society. For example do you see any catholic clergy (or any other denomination) present at Remenbrance Day ceremionies? no it's always the CofE leading. It annoys me no end when I see the CofE clergy bowing and scraping to the Royals in churches which were once catholic eg Westminster Abbey...which ceased to be an Abbey in 1559 when Elizabeth I expelled the Benedictine community from their home and property. It is NOT AN ABBEY it is (now) an Anglican church dedicated to St Peter.
