Based on the true story that will inspire the world, Warner Bros. Pictures’ “King Richard follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. Two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith (“Ali,” “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Bad Boys for Life”) stars as Richard, under the direction of Reinaldo Marcus Green (“Monsters and Men”).
Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. The profoundly moving film shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.
Aunjanue Ellis (“If Beale Street Could Talk,” TV’s “Quantico”) plays the girls’ mom, Oracene “Brandi” Williams, Saniyya Sidney (“Hidden Figures,” “Fences”) stars as Venus Williams, Demi Singleton (TV’s “Godfather of Harlem”) stars as Serena Williams, with Tony Goldwyn (the “Divergent” series, TV’s “Scandal”) as coach Paul Cohen and Jon Bernthal (upcoming “The Many Saints of Newark,” “Ford v Ferrari”) as coach Rick Macci. The ensemble also includes Andy Bean (“IT Chapter Two”), Kevin Dunn (the “Transformers” films, HBO’s “Veep”) and Craig Tate (“Greyhound”).
Green directed “King Richard” from a screenplay written by Zach Baylin. The producers were Tim White and Trevor White under their Star Thrower Entertainment banner, and Will Smith under his Westbrook banner. Isha Price, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith, Adam Merims, Lynn Harris, Allan Mandelbaum, Jon Mone and Peter Dodd served as the executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Robert Elswit (“There Will Be Blood”), production designers Wynn Thomas (“Da 5 Bloods,” “Hidden Figures”) and William Arnold (“The Hate U Give”), Oscar-nominated editor Pamela Martin (“The Fighter”), and two-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Sharen Davis (“Dreamgirls,” “Ray”). The music is by Oscar-nominated composer Kris Bowers (“Space Jam: A New Legacy,” “A Concerto is a Conversation”).
A Warner Bros. Pictures Presentation, A Star Thrower Entertainment Production, A Westbrook Production, A Keepin’ It Reel Production, “King Richard” is slated for U.S. release on November 19, 2021 in theaters and on HBO Max via the Ad-Free plan; it will be available on HBO Max for 31 days from theatrical release.

Except Richard Williams walked out on his other daughters. He had 5 children that he just left in destitution. Sabrina Williams: "But once he left, within a year, we became very poor. There wasn't always meals on the table. We went downhill." Sabrina has also accused her father of not paying child support to her mother and having multiple illegitimate children, saying, "My mom always argued with my dad about his affairs, he was a serial cheat." I know the feeling. I'm 67 and I always took my kids on vacation. In 98 we went to Circus Circus. All the Whites got out of the pool. I have photos. My kids asked had we done something. I told them to keep on walking. We got into the pool and had a good time. Finally a little White girl got in the pool. Asked if we were Christians. I said yes..she relayed this to a big White guy and it was on. I told my kids that they expected us to be loud talking and just showing out. My kids are 47 42 37 and 35..Vegas has changed..too many Blacks..lol

He did not believe in talent. He believed in having a plan and work ethic. Then, at 19 years old, after 15 years(!) of dedication, hardship, focus, sacrifice, practice and compete we see the unreal level they reached. It wasn't just an overnight thing, they put some serious effort into it. And because most of us are not willing or don't have the possibilities to put in the same amount of work as they did, we tell ourselves they are so good because of their Talent. Don't let "Talent" foul you.

I watch it more than 5x daily...this movie teaches how to respect the sacrifice of a dedicated wife that believes in your dreams...My punch line in this film is.. dream Big, write it down, pay the price, fellow your plans, be patient, family first, and most importantly be humble... Richard telling Venus “You’re gonna be representing every black girl on earth” right before her match (looks like it’s either when she turned pro or when she reached the us open final on her debut) already has me in tears. @Stellangrad25 I mean, it is, but I digress (I’m a white man, btw). What an amazing movie! I just got to see it. So sad that the Slappy Smith Show prevented me from seeing this ultra heart warming and important movie to see. I have tears of joy rolling down my cheeks, celebrating the story of the Wiliams Family. It's like love overload. What is sad about my remedial reflection is that I have tormented the memory of the great actor Will Smith on social media at every silly opportunity. But, after seeing his performance and every single actor supporting him, as well as the directing and the production, as well as awakening to Mrs. Williams, as most mothers and wives bring the. Actual. Woman behind the man truth to ever take,, I have come to understand the importance of Mr. Smith in front of the cameras. I, actually, came to this realization when he was the lead of "Independence Day". And he has starred in many blockbusters since; I love Will Smith I want to see him go even further. He is important to me. He is important to the world. Please, forgive him, Chris Rock You made a remake of, " Heaven Can Wait". Be divine. Forgive, Champ! You won this. Most important bout. It's in Chris' s hands And I I've loved Chris Rock from years, as well We have to forgive Will Smith. I said, Will. Not Slappy. Let's move forward. This is nothing, compared to the rest of the world.

I just watched this. What an amazing, powerful film. What a performance by Smith - he deserved that statue. What a damn shame he was high or whatever he was that made him loose his judgement. This film is a statement of parental love, perseverance and humility, and of the potential of empowered women and tenacity of struggling black families who succeed despite unsurmountable odds. However, we're all human and are at times responsible for monumentally stupid choices and reactions. I hope Will can make this right, move on, and thrive.

He was a guardian, coach, teacher, mentor, and their strength, plus much more that im missing. His daughters was his life, he was determined to make something of his daughters, he had a plan before they were born! That is a dedicated father that believed in them. And what makes this story different from all other athletes , besides the fact that they were raised in Compton and playing a sport that the public wasn't used to seeing black women playing, but he was determined to get them to be the best and the daughter's didn't want to let him down out of pure love and gratitude for his dedication. The family bond is THE STORY. A lovely story!! This story really touched me because growing up my father took me to all my sport functions home and away games, cheerleading, dance squad and conventions and dance camps in the mountains, driving me all over the state of California. Everything i was involved in, i always thought i drove him crazy but finding out years later that he loved being apart of all that. I miss him so much because a father can conceive you but a Dad will show his love by being your encouragement and strength to be your best while you are young and their reward is to see u grow up into a well rounded adult. I love him for that for being the best father to me. I was very lucky.

This film and story was / is incredible! Congrats to the Williams sisters and family. It's a shame Will Smith made a fool of himself at the Oscars...

@ Malcolm Brooks We all have made fools of ourselves at sometime or another. Please be very careful of judging and casting a shadow of this incident. You are NOT ABOVE MAKING A SUPER FOOL OF YOURSELF IN THE HEAT OF THE MOMENT.

This is by far Will Smith’s best role I watch this movie a few times with my family. He deserves an academy award for this role. He did an excellent job.

They really cast the actors perfectly. The girls emulated both sisters tennis technique perfectly!
