When I was 16 and I remember seeing Venice and Serena playing tennis, someone who looks like me…and were good too…I bought a tennis racket that day and looked in the Compton encyclopedia (pre-you tube)on how to play tennis. I wanted to serve nothing but aces, because Serena and Venice were geniuses at it. I’m 42 now and has been a super die hard fan since. Yea, these legendary queens deserve their roses 🌹🌹🌹 for sure!!

I’m in my early 30s, and I remember them bursting onto the scene with beads in the hair and the milk mustache on the Got Milk posters in my school’s cafeteria. They were the first Black people I ever saw with a tennis racket. They definitely broke done barriers and made the tennis more than an exclusive country club sport.

She was particularly nasty the last 6 years when she found it impossible to get that one elusive slam needed to draw level with Court (which in my mind does not make her a 'great'. A true great would not have choked all the finals she was in to match and beat that record). Like here, the 'I am retiring' speech was timed to ensure the crowd were even more partisan and on her side, helping put the opponent off. Williams in my view was a good and at times very good player but great she ain't and a role model for other kids she really, really is not.

Williams is one of the great tennis players but women's tennis in the Graf era didn't have to be revived from the dead, and Graf (another great) followed on the heels of the Evert/Navratilova/Goolagong Cawley era (another three greats) in the era that exploded women's tennis onto the international scene who followed on the heels of the Court/King/Bueno era (another three greats) who followed on the heels of.... I've heard NUMEROUS up and coming tennis players (of all races) talk about how they were inspired by Serena and looked up to her and that she's the reason they got into tennis. I've honestly heard NO ONE say they were inspired by Henin and Clijsters or that they were the reason they picked up a tennis racket in the first place. Let's look at it realistically, Serena is 40 and can no longer keep the limit to play at the top. That is completely normal and natural. I said the same thing. Something in her mentality kept her from pulling it together sooner. All she had to do was put the work in. But she did not prioritize tennis anymore so she went out there unprepared. Her ego forced her to crash train for this final tournament so she wouldn't look bad. I noticed in this final speech she said nothing about her opponent's performance. But this was the end and it was all about Serena. 💚GOAT

it is absolutely terrible the way women's rights are baffled in the USA and where are the William sisters when it counts...where is the sports media when it counts...where is the WTA when to counts. Funny how quick they were to condemn China while they're own rights and Black minority voting rights are being taken away. The GOAT has remained silent...going home to the comfort of her millions...now a silent lamb.
