He is king of the realm, married to a beautiful queen who craves his love, yet all mean nothing to him, he is stuck in a memory of a dead woman, a warrior in a peaceful land. It’s what makes Robert arguably worse than any other king in Westeros history. When he took over it was undoubtedly one of the best situations imaginable. Tons of money, a long summer, no major wars, powerful alliances and no serious threats on the horizon, and yet he still sent the realm into absolute chaos via his sloth. Maegor at least built the Red Keep and de-armed the faith. Viserys 1 got screwed over by his own court betraying his wishes to crown Rhaenyra. Aerys 1 was terrible but really only went to war bc of Rhaegar and Lyanna fleeing with no explanation which subsequently brought Ned’s brother and dad to King’s Landing.

Robert was not corrupt. Every poor choice he ever made was due to heightened emotion from a point of suffering. i mean he abused his power by spending the crowns money on feasts and by charming women with his authority/whoring with the crowns gold. Its overall better than trying to actively control the other large houses, take from the poor, wage wars of conquest etc. It just manifested in a lot of debt to littlefinger, lanisters and iron bank. GRRM said that the hero of ASOIAF died before the story began, which makes me think that the hero was Jon Arryn. He raised Robert and Ned, didn't betray them to the Mad King, helped Robert capture the throne, and even ruled for Robert. His only fault was marrying Lysa Tully and taking her advice to hire Littlefinger as Master of Coin. If he didn't marry her then he could've exposed Cersei's inbred bastards, cause a great shame to the Lannisters where Tyrion is the only one to carry on Tywin's line with honour (also causing to lose the Lannisters prestige and respect), the kingdom wouldn't be in debt, Jeoffrey wouldn't be king, and there wouldn't have been a civil war where most of the Starks were killed and the Boltons wouldn't have caused a power struggle for alliances in the North after the Red Wedding. Without Jon Arryn to keep check over the kingdom, the white walkers would've had a more united kingdom ready for them.

I have to disagree because the white walkers are inherently a magical/supernatural threat beat them only those of the prophecy that foretells their defeat which means a blood line of Aerys and Rhaella and the Union of ice and fire. The hero is Rhaegar as he forged lightbringer by fathering Jon

Robert wasn't a good king. He knew this, that's why he put the best people in charge to make decisions for him and for Westeros. Didn't he say this himself? He was better suited for whoring and feasting (I believe because he couldn't satisfy his desire to use his hammer which was left unsaid) which was used against him by *Cercei to hide her incest children. Robert didn't just go out hunting to purposely miss each one of her children's birth (including one they shared that died) he hunted to give her and each child an animal hide, it's an old custom for the father to do. It's a promise that he will provide for his family. I think the boar (last) hunt was for fun as he wanted to kill something, Today fathers usually are at the births (like Jaimie was at them all I believe challenging all present to remove him if they dared) rather than hunting for a hide, instead, sometimes, coming with a teddy or special blanket. Robert had to be king due to lineage, forever rebelling against a crown he won in a rebellion.

Whilst people say Robert wasn’t actively a bad King, I have to disagree. When he took the throne the treasury was full. He not only depleted it, but put the realm into crippling debt. Yes Baelish was pulling strings there, however Robert chose to be delusional and not wonder where all the money was coming from and how he was paying it back. Yes he put Jon Arryn in command, but Jon Arryn was clearly bent to Robert’s will from time to time if he didn’t stop the debt increase. Honestly I’d argue robert was one of the best kings by virtue of his acknowledgment that he wasn’t a good king. Sometimes being a leader isn’t about doing everything yourself, Sometimes a great leader is defined by their ability to recognize talent and utilize it accordingly. (Byzantine Emperor, Justinian I was famous for not doing everything himself, He had talented generals, Administrators, tax collectors, law makers, And his wife who ruled while he was sick with plague) Robert wasn’t good with administration so he got Jon Arryn, He wasn’t good with coin so he had littlefinger, he used Aerys’ badass kingsguard for defense and later got Ned stark as a really talented king’s hand Robert still defended the realm, respected its lords and upheld its customs. But he also knew when to step down. I’d say that’s a better trait than absolute decadence like Aegon IV or the ambitious but troubled rule of Aegon V, Or the narcissism that was Aerys II ALSO Robert was a great king by default simply due to his rock solid political alliance in Westeros. The targaryens couldn’t forge alliances within the kingdom due to their practice of incest or marrying into Valyrian houses, and when they did marry for alliance after the death of their dragons, it was mostly with Dorne. Robert on the other hand was a foster son to Jon Arryn, Foster brother to Ned Stark, son in law to Tywin Lannister, AND Brother to Renly! That’s the North, the Vale, the Westerlands, Storms end, and The crown lands firmly in his thrall ( and this isnt even mentioning the riverlands and their alliance with the north and the vale) If high garden, Dorne, or the iron islands wanted to rebel, they’d have to face this massive coalition, and only balon was dumb enough to try him TL;DR: Bobby. B was a great King! Storms End 4 life Also, Great Video as always

And we know the tryion gave them a rich reward for doing nothing on the war of the five kings , jon arryn must have given them something something expensive. Although people talk about Roberts tournaments, id say building a navy from scratch ( and replacing losses after the grey joy rebellion) and paying for the food supply of all the armies of the seven kingdoms for a year would account for a serious amount of the crown spending.

I wouldn’t say the peace had little to do with Robert. Yes he was a bad king when he was engaged, well, bad fiscally. But he was an excellent figure head. The beloved war hero that made enemies into friends pretty easily. I’d say the idea of mythos of Robert had a big part in the peace. Plus he was self aware enough to know he was a bad ruler and leave most of the work to competent people. That’s no small thing either.

The best decision for him and everyone else would have been following through on his plans to go to Essos and become a sellsword. Let all that nonsense with Jeofry work itself out in its own way this time maybe even without the Death of Ned because killing him might bring Robert back to take revenge, and the small council might well have succeeded in working around the brat enough to deal with the threat of the Others or the targaryans return without a civil war.

People always fail to realise how bad of a move it was to marry Stannis with a Florent, actively making The Tyrells enemies of The Baratheons (and then he also gave Stannis Dragonsyone, lol). If Jon Arryn had given Mace Tyrell or Leyton Hightower the Master of Coin seat at the small Council and had married Stannis with a Dornish wife it would have been much better. Stannis was bound with a House that threatened The Tyrells but has low might to truly claim Highgarden. When Robert died Stannis instantly started with The Lannisters, The Starks and The Martells as sworn enemies and you don't want both The Reach and The Westerlands as your enemies, you can't practically ever rule Westeros. These two areas are most of Westeros economy and population.

Robert was a terrible administrator and wastrel of coin, but as a king he has merits. First he was a fierce warrior, no medieval king ever ruled without being successful at war. He was very personable, it was said he could fight a man in the morning and drunk under the table in the evening. He always enacted his threats, he understood well that fear of his wrath kept the princes and lords in line. Lastly he appointed competent advisors to positions of power and kept out of their way. A bad king yes, but also a strong king which may be more important.

Robert was a better king than rhaegar wouldve been. Everyone simps for rhaegar since he liked to play music, was a romantic and looked good but at the end of the day he abducted the daughter of his vassal who was bethrothed to yet another vassal and decided to raw dog her while his dad, a crazy tyrant, burned her family alive. What robert did, starting a rebellion to get her released, was absolutely justified and in fact it would have been the kings job to get her back. Rhaegar disrespected the martells, starks and baratheons by abducting lyanna and showed the realm and its lords that he cared neither for them or their honor or families. For all they knew he was a more handsome aegon 4th in the making. Yes robert had his flaws, yes he was a bad dad, yes he was oblivious to the corruption in his court but the court was always corrupt, many court members like stannis and varys were actually very capable, he had a good eye for who to appoint as hand and his children turned out alright, joff being the exception but thats certainly more the fault of cersei.
