One of my favorite Christmas Carols. I especially love the final verse -- what I can I give Him, give Him my heart -- how can one not be moved by this?

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's such a beautiful hymn. It makes me think of my daddy, too. I've been listening to the 9 lessons and carols broadcast on Christmas eve day for as long as I can remember and I always loved this carol in particular, so my little sister, he, and I learned the parts to sing together ❤ he passed away 8yrs ago, but I still listen to (and sing) all of the music we shared. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, and I'm sure your father can still hear this hymn ❤

This melody captures the bleakness of winter and the glory and warmth in our hearts. Turbulent times are ahead of us but this song assures us that whatever happens, Christmas will be always, and always be, Christmas.

This was always my grandfathers favourite carol and although he died a long time ago,in 1968,it always reminds me of him whenever I hear it.He was a Red Cross worker and said little but knew a lot...The Holst version is my favourite because of its poignant harmonies, although it makes me feel sad and sentimental about things from the past.

that time of the year again. its alwayz around this time i feel like carols and reminds me of old school days. reminds me of cold frozen winter mornings.. quiet roads..that typical quiet village winter setting. yet ive never ever lived in a village. Used to do paper rounds in one near me though. all the houses in winter looked stunning. i hope its a cold dark bleak winter this year so i can enjoy it more.

In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Enough for Him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. Angels and archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air, But only His mother In her maiden bliss, Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, If I were a wise man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him, Give my heart.

My absolutely fave Christmas Carol -- the words are so evocative of an extremely cold unwelcoming environment. And then comes the birth of Jesus and the thought of what present could we give? Our hearts, of course. Perfect summation of the true meaning of Christmas. Listening to and singing Christmas carols is one way to keep the true meaning of Christmas alive. I wonder how many people in my FL neighborhood, who put out all sorts of non-Christmas figures like a Santa that hulas, or R2D2 or the grinch, actually go to church during Advent, Christmas and Epiphany to remind themselves of the true meaning of Christmas and worship the Lord of Hosts. I certainly do and am practicing our anthems my 3-person choir will sing.

Poem by Christina Rosetti (1830-1894) published posthumously in Rossetti's Poetic Works in 1904 ( info. thanks to Wikipedia!), what a beautiful marriage of music and lyric! Nollaig Shona!! In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign. In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. @2Sparks002 Simplicity is the magic word here. Where a stable place sufficed, only the most pure and simple harmony would be in line with the spirit of the poem and melody. Here simplicity opens the heart in a way eloquence can not -by which I do not mean to imply that Drake's setting is NOT simple and pure, but to me Holsts version is even more so. We can only be thankful for such a thing of beauty.

In a way the Darke & Holst versions are rather different animals. This is a simple hymn tune whereas the Darke is a choir anthem in that it employs different harmonies and organ accompaniment for each verse. Both are beautiful but for me the simplicity of the Holst actually suits the "bleak" word setting rather better

Is there a Lenten hymn with this same melody? I just today, the Monday of Holy Week, overheard a hymn being played on a speaker that had this melody, and I thought I was hearing Christmas music here in Passiontide, but was told it was a Lenten hymn. I have my doubts about that claim, though!

@georgebur what about the HARMONIES in this? I just don't get it, maybe I'm missing something but Darke's version doesn't have the same magic for me. Holst's chokes me up slightly every time. Yeah, I'm a choral singer, I've only ever actually sung Darke's version with an SSA choir though so perhaps that's why I feel differently about it. Oh by the way, that link's not working for me, sure you've pasted it all in?

@EmmaParsnibbles Oh no! What about the HARMONIES? I am in excellent company with my assessment - choral directors in the UK rated the Darke Top Carol: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7752029.stm It is some achievement by Darke to overshadow one of England's great all round composers but somehow he did it! Are you, like me, a choral singer?

I always was disturbed by this song but never heard it in full - so I wanted to give it a try and nope I still hate it. Then I researched it and found that it was written b y a depressed Victorian woman and that explains this downer of a song. Only a manic depressive could have written this heavy chain of a song. This is not a critique of the music or the singers.
