Probably one of the most underrated bands ever. I always remember the late great Tommy Vance raving about them on the Friday night rock show.

They are not underrated. People tell them on a daily basis they are one of the if not THE BEST band ever.

NIce review Phil. In recent times I have heard great things about King's X and particularly guitarist Ty Tabor. Sounds like a band I must check out.

great review and it is a great boxset! though Atlantic/BMG did a misprint as Ear Candy came out in 1996 and their Best Of came out on Atlantic in 1997 so the Atlantic years were really thru 1997 ;)

Have a similar cd boxset from Atlantic including the first 5 albums..all excellent stuff....seen them in the old Marquee in London supporting their third album....they were great supporting AC/DC at Wembley arena as well in 91....a unique band and still going strong! Nice review!

Their guitarist Ty Tabor is a big fan of Trapeze💜 Both bands are way too underappreciated😢

Great review Phil. I have all the albums but this set is tempting for the bonus tracks.

What do you think of the albums after those in this box set? I thought Tape Head was okay but then I really went off of their albums (though I do own them) until "XV" in 2008 which was a "return to form", though I haven't made my mind up about the most recent album - I have mixed feelings about the tracks that I have heard from it.

I like them all to varying degrees. Mr. Bulbous took me the longest to appreciate, it is only in the last couple of years that it clicked with me.

@@n0s0luti0n I probably should give them a bit more attention than I have done, to be fair. I did notice that on that 2010 "Live All Over The Place" album, I think there were maybe only 2 or 3 tracks that were on the albums from Mr. Bulbous onwards - so I assume the band doesn't consider them to be as good.

@@terrydaktyllus1320 I've seen them live fairly recently and they barely play any of that material.

@@n0s0luti0n My apologies, please ignore the reply I deleted - I was having another conversation in another group and got mixed up! I have not seen them live in probably more than 10 years now, I think I was at the gig where they recorded the Live In London concert.

Phil .I want to recommend listen to some spanish rock that you wont believe how good they were.from Argentina.checked Invisible the album Invisible and La Maquina de hacer pajaros ,Peliculas album. They were from the 70s.from 2 greats from Argentina.Luis Alberto Spinetta and Charly Garcia. Hope you liked them!!!and keep up with your work,I am discovering bands I never knew.60s and 70s are the best decades for music.

Nice review. I'll admit that Kings X are one of those bands that I wanted to like more than I actually did. With that said, I think both "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska" and "Dogman" are well worth a listen for any classic rock fan. Take care!

Bought the first album because Kerrang writers in 1988, if I remember correctly, had it as their album of the year. Bought the first three but non since for some reason.

Just listening to the opening track on Gretchen and they definitely have their own sound. I have heard the name before before can't recall the context. Anyway, thanks for this, Phil, I am tempted.

I saw King's X many times throughout the years of those first 6 albums and they are still a favourite band of mine for those albums - I was open mouthed the first time I heard "Summerland" from "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska", I think that has always been my favourite track of theirs. I also love "Over My Head", the live version when Dug Pinnick does his "talkie bit" halfway through is an absolute spine tingler too. (There's a great version of it on the 2010 live album "Live All Over The Place".) I have always loved "King" off of "Out Of The Silent Planet" too. It's just a shame that after this point they went a bit "strange" - the album "Tape Head" after "Ear Candy" was okay but then it all went a bit wierd with "Please Come Home, Mr. Bulbous" for a few albums after that - though they made a bit of a comeback for me with "XV" in 2008, the opening track "Pray" is just great King's X and back to the old days. At that point, drummer Jerry Gaskill had a whole heap of heart problems and I was hoping to get tickets to see them for the first time in many years in Southampton last year but then they cancelled the European tour because guitarist Ty Tabor had a serious medical condition. I haven't made my mind up about the new album yet with the tracks that I've heard from it - I think it must be something to do with having "royal links" in the band name because they mirror my feelings towards "Queensryche" too - Queensryche peaked with "Operation Mindcrime" and "Empire" around 1990 including one of the greatest live gigs I have ever been to at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1990 but then they just made album after album of bland music and I haven't got the energy with them to see how they may have improved with Todd Le Torre replacing Geoff Tate. I guess not having had previous versions of the albums you don't know how good these might be as remasters - I might just "take a pop" at the box set if only for the few interesting bonus tracks.
