Great vid. I used to love pier fishing when the salmon came in. Now I'm up in Northern Ontario and we don't have them here.

Nice man, what rod you using and pound test?
@MudSharkZ5 жыл бұрын
6'6" St. Croix medium heavy, 20 lb. test Power Pro braid main line, 15 lb. flourocarbon leader (about 3 ft.)
@MudSharkZ5 жыл бұрын
I like running braid with a flourocarbon leader, but you could just run 12 lb. test mono straight to the stick bait and be fine I think.

@MudSharkZ5 жыл бұрын
Hey there, you're like directly across the lake from me. I've never fished the Canadian side, but I'm sure its the same as over here. Early morning has always been best for me, focus on couple hours before and after sunrise. Stick baits or spoons with that kelly green color or firetiger, glow stuff before the sun comes up.
@thirdiprodigy35795 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I will try that for sure!

You ever fish with glow spoons at night?
@MudSharkZ5 жыл бұрын
I've tried it, but haven't caught any fish yet. Moonshine makes some awesome glow spoon colors now. I'm hoping to try some more night time stuff this year.

That “weird” fish was a big ol gizzard shad. Freeze it n cut it up for catfish or pike bait 👌
@MudSharkZ Жыл бұрын
You're right, I'm just not used to seeing them that big. Growing up we used to use the smaller ones for catfish bait back in Ohio and they worked great 👍

How many salmons are we allowed to keep daily? Is there a limit?
@MudSharkZ3 жыл бұрын
For Kings, it's 3 per day on the South Shore of Lake Ontario.

Are those salmon good to eat? Moved down here from AK a year ago and have been dying for salmon…the flesh looks pretty white in the pic, just wondering if it still tastes like a salmon. TIA
@MudSharkZ3 жыл бұрын
Great Lakes salmon aren't quite as good as Pacific Salmon in terms of edibility in my opinion. I prefer them smoked, canned, or made into salmon candy myself. The flesh is best when you catch them out on the lake when they are silver. Once the fish start to move into the rivers, their flesh quickly washes out. The best eating salmon out of Lake Ontario for my money are the Coho and Atlantic Salmon, but they aren't nearly as numerous as the Kings, so they are much less common to catch.

Thanks for the reply and info! Is there a time of day to catch them that you recommend? I’m coming up this weekend but it’s a 2 hour drive. Have no problem making the trip just for the battle if I don’t like the way they taste :)

@@lukevosz9622 If you're going to hit the pier, I would come about an hour or two before sunrise and fish until maybe 10 AM. Usually the bite is over by then. You can fish the piers any time of night or day. Upstream of the first bridge on any of the tributaries, the regulations change.

Nice catch. what reel are you using?
@MudSharkZ6 ай бұрын
My go-to pier reel for kings is a 4000 series Shimano Sedona with 20 lb. Suffix 832 braid. You need the larger capacity or the kings will spool you.
@alldaypan6 ай бұрын
@@MudSharkZ That's awesome. I also happen to run a 4000 Sedona as my spinning setup, but it's the rear drag version (4000RB). It has the same capacity as the front drag version but with noticeably less max drag-7 pounds is the max drag. Do you think 7 pounds will suffice for these Lake Ontario shore salmons? I'm worried about whether I should buy a new reel because of this.
@MudSharkZ6 ай бұрын
@@alldaypan I think 7 lbs. will be OK. I guess if you get spooled you'll know you need to upgrade but I know I never have my drag set near to max. You want them to run and tire themselves out, if you horse them too much you'll just break your gear.

Hey nice tackle box! I would guess a gizzard shad.
@MudSharkZ6 жыл бұрын
That's my guess too, although the spot up near the gill plate was totally absent. Weird thing is they were all over the surface chasing something, and occasionally they'd smack your lure.
