But why did he HAVE those children if he was just gonna neglect them, and love only his first child? I mean, he was a terrible father to his kids with Alicent, and every son he had made Rhaenyra's own claim weaker.. His second set of children would've made the Targaryen Line stronger, not weaker. Rhaenyra having bastards already weakens the Targaryen line and legitimacy

@@thalmoragent9344 Paddy has talked about this and the explanation, which tracks with the characterization on screen, is that Viserys was a slave to what he thought was his duty: providing stability, making his house and the realm stronger by having more heirs (which he was led to believe would make Rhaenyra safer - this was misguided counsel by bad-faith actors like Otto Hightower), all so eventually when Aegon's prophecy came to pass, Westeros would be ready. It was a burden he bore badly. He wasn't a strong or wise enough king to know when to keep the peace and when to make war. He didn't know how to please anyone in his family as he balanced that duty alongside his guilt and soul-death after letting Aemma be butchered. He wasn't a terrible father by choice. He was too ill to be present. He was a husk of a man because the throne destroys people's lives. He was naive and let himself be manipulated into taking another wife when he was still deep in mourning. He didn't realize Rhaenyra was the only child he would be able to really connect with, and he didn't realize that by *not realizing this* he would doom her and his cherished grandchildren by her. He left the people dearest to him vulnerable time and time again. It's sad stuff. He's a deeply flawed and deeply tragic character.

@@cheyennem9218 Yeah, overall at least I can give Viserys credit that every now and then, he'd put his foot down on some matters (even if poorly handled), and in the end, made efforts to maintain peace. Better than Aenys was, but that's a low bar for any Targaryen king. Still, I appreciate Viserys wanting things to just be chill, I resonate with that. But I feel he made vital mistakes back when his health was at least decent, and that only made things harder to handle in the future as his health deteriorated. "Viserys the Peaceful" was perhaps too much a pacifist, sad but true. Still, he was a bad father to Aemond in the situation regarding his lost Eye. Sure he can't bring it back but, come on man, at least pretend you care or feel bad for your son being half blinded and legally a cripple

He was better than Ned. Ned all the way was an idiot by medieval times. Viserys made some mistakes, but for most of the time he was a good king, following his uncle way to maintain peace and order for 30 years.

But Ned wasn’t really an idiot he was just too honorable that it came back to kill him but if he could go back in time he wouldn’t have done anything differently cuz the Starks r just built like that

Ned above all was a GOOD man, someone who refused to participate in attrocities such as the killing of childrens or innocents. He wasn’t fond of conflict but didn’t shy away from it. The downfall of Ned wasn’t stupidity but mercy. He didn’t inform Cersei of his plot because he was incompetent or an idiot, he did so to save her and her childrens from Robert’s wrath once he was informed, he tried to keep everyone alive whilst reinstoring the truthful heir after Robert passed. He was a man of duty but above all of good will, his decisions were not made in ignorance of the possible consequences but despite those possible consequences. In my opinion his only real mistake was trusting littlefinger as a middle man.
