Also, I daresay you'd be surprised just how much England has deteriorated in just those 8 years since you left. It really has fallen off a cliff post Brexit Anyway, you're right, there's beautiful scenery and some amazing history... but when you're queueing up at a food bank to get fed or huddled under a blanket because heating just got so ridiculously expensive, then that history isn't really worth a whole lot. If you're English right now , there's a tonne of social pressure to do 4 things : 1) Pretend that you love everyone and everything 2) Hate your own nationality, and especially its history - mostly because of the British Empire (even though that only accounts for about 150 years max of English history) 3) Forget our pivotal role in saving Europe in WW1 and then again in WW2. 4) Then once you've forgotten those... mentally self-punish yourself even more because of Brexit. None of this actually helps anyone of course .... but the pressure to do it is definitely there.. and I think that's really sad. Especially because if you know anything about European history over the last 500 years ... then you will know the other side of the coin too. An even-handed study of history will show that England has usually been a (net) force for good and for progress in the world. Even with ALL the failings and with the history of the empire. (I'm saying all this as someone who is half English, half Scottish but I live in England).
@thadtuiol1717 Жыл бұрын
What bugs me about the empire is that all the Welsh, Scots and even Irish today try and pretend it was nothing to do with them, when if you've read anything at all about the actual people involved in it, from exploration, trading, military campaigning, and administrating it, people from aforesaid nations played a massive role, especially the Scots. In fact, the British empire was a huge Anglo-Scottish undertaking.
@True_Heretic Жыл бұрын
I don't feel that pressure at all. I think that you may be like a lot of people in our country. Far too subjective and opposed to any kind of change or rethink. (Opposition to change is only due when a society has gained perfection, surely Stephen? I don't do 1 2 3 4 or punish myself with Brexit. Then again Brexit destroyed the Pound and it will probably never recover completely. So maybe those that voted for it should give themselves a bit of a slap after all. We have made good contributions to other societies, usually to make our exploitation of them more efficient. We invented concentration camps (internment camps), found all kinds of imaginative ways of destroying peoples and their cultures, championed the Slave Trade, developed super rich Britons and way, way, way, more super poor Britons, and have a chunk of our population develop the narcisism that most imperial powers generate within a percentage of their nation. Yes, we stood against the Nazis, bravely and impressively. We invented so many many important things on a technical, industrial or medicinal basis that benefitted people all over the world (probably most of that by those on your Scottish side), and we have come up with some super cultural stuff, for sure. Like any other society we have good elements and bad, now and throughout history. There is nothing special about us. We are just human beings like everybody else.

I'm not mentally punishing myself over Brexit. Our messed up economy and destroyed importance on the world stage as a result of Brexit is doing a good enough job of that on it's own. The thing that gets me is that no one hates Scotland, despite how much the Scots hate us. I’ve noticed it with football, as long as the result doesn’t effect England, we always seem to support Scotland when they play. Admittedly, there’s some playful ribbing when they lose, but we mostly support them when they’re playing. The Scots on the other hand, cheer on any team that’s playing England. What I find really funny about this particular video that you watched is that he asked this question in London and I bet the responses that he would've received outside of that dump would be completely different. To put it bluntly if London and the southeast of England was an independent country the rest of us throughout the whole of the U.K. would probably say that we hate it. Incidentally, I've also lived in North America - mostly in western Canada but I also spent a couple of months in the U.S.A. - and the only country that I really hate is the U.S.A. I have my own reasons for hating your country, King Boomer, and they're too numerous to mention in this comment thread. Suffice to say that I found it to be a violent and aggressive place to visit and would never want to go there again....furthermore I've never encouraged anyone to visit there either; what's the point in travelling to the U.S.A. by plane and then being shipped home in either a coffin or a body-bag after being murdered by some gun-toting maniac because he's had an off day? Thanks but no thanks on that score, Mate!

The video Deutschland by Rammstein is the best examination of whether one can love one's country or not that I've ever seen. Tracing the history of Germany from ancient Rome's attempts at invasion, through to half of it being part of the Soviet Union (the group grew up in the DDR), via numerous other historical references, it is astonishing, and deeply rewarding in its richness.

England is just not a very pleasant place at the moment. People are struggling financially more than ever in a cost of living crisis, faith in the government is at an all time low with all the scandals and handling of covid in recent years. People are broke, people are angry, and people are at each others throats a lot and there generally feels like a big divide in society that's not really been seen since the 1980s. I love being English, but I must say I don't like England very much at the moment.

As an Englishman who does like England i can also see why a lot of people are picking England. For a small country we do get right royally shafted pay is low for most people cost of living is high ,The north south divide is gradually vanishing meaning its becoming just as expensive to live in the north (Leeds myself) . The weather is rubbish , too many silly laws the work/life balance is off we seem to work long silly hours for pittance only evident by all the strikes going on at the minute and hundreds of thousands using foodbanks. Just my opinion we do a lot of things right but equally get a lot wrong.

Or human rights issues. But for me on the whole I don’t hate any other country. I love my own country. When I’ve been abroad I’ve always after a while really looked forward to going home. England can be great in many respects with or without the right circumstances for some but can also be a hell hole for others. Like all countries it has it's problems which drive you round the bend when never solved and sorted. I've travelled a fair bit and always appreciate on returning the cool temperature and the odd kind of order we practice. The cold and general depressive cloud over the country then gets the mind wondering again about warmth and alien climbs. We can't help the weather but it all could be so much better.

When you visit the UK, don’t spend all your time around London, visit the sights of course, but get out and about to other areas. London is fine for what it is…a huge capital city that is in it’s own little bubble. Most English people outside London would not say England as the country they hate most. I’d have thought France would have got plenty of votes. Hate is a big word though and unless you have experienced any country for a good length of time, you shouldn’t really be hating it. One final point…..I have rarely met anyone that “hates” America in England, we take the p*** of course, but it’s all good natured and friendly.

The country most people probably dislike the most is the one they've spent enough time in to build up a list of things they dislike about it. I dislike the government (both little g and big G), the weather (particularly heatwaves, polar vortexes, floods, droughts), collapsing infrastructure, collapsing services, stupidly expensive infrastructure projects (how can Hinkley Point C be "the most expensive object on the planet", 50% over budget, and nearly 3 years over schedule?), lack of housing, high rents, high utility bills, fruit & vegetable rationing, no-one being able to say where on the planet a tracked parcel is, a lack of parking spaces, useless departments/agencies/quangos (Trading Standards are about as effective at getting illegal wires/cables/plugs/fuses off the market as the Environment Agency are at getting anglers sewage-free rivers), customer services so bad at complying with consumer rights law you have to be willing to go all the way to getting a CCJ against a company (or reach the stage of a winding-up petition), censorship of the Internet (whether by the Premier League or a halfwit), low wages, zero hours contracts, building on the green belt...

As for England being named , London and a lot of our City areas are overcrowded , we have a cost of living crisis and it's cold . I wouldn't want to live elsewhere , and a lot of the answers were tongue in cheek .Once the sun comes out things look so much better .

To be fair, the only thing I was supprised by is, that no one said France. As a whole the British tend not to dislike countries, we may dislike the politics of a country, but that is not the country it's self, which is also why the answer of England came up as much as it did. Wehe same answer English know about the politics here, more than we know of other countries. The daft thing about it is, that if those people that said they disliked England heard someone from outside the UK give the same answer, they may get a bit pissed off at the person that said it.
