Back when I was flat broke Kingdom Come was released. It remains the only time in my life I SOLD my PLASMA. Took the $30 and bought the latest KC. Many years later, my girlfriend (who was an Oncology nurse) had a terminally ill teenage patient who loved comics. We gave him a KC TPB to read in the hospital. His brother got it after he passed away.

I know Mark Waid as the man who now writes the worst-selling comic book in the industry, and gets into petty internet arguements where he calls any critics (including black people) racists. What a fall from grace.

@@mex321 Oh I know black people can be racist, but in this context, there was absolutely no racism involved. Look it up. He called KZbinr "JustSomeGuy" a white supremacist for criticizing his extremely politicized pro-black comics, not realizing that JustSomeGuy is a black man. He assumes anybody that doesn't like him is just a Trump supporting lunatic. He's also currently in a lawsuit with KZbinr Richard Meyer for allegedly pressuring comics distributors to refuse to publish Richard's comics because, you guessed it, he thinks Richard (with three mixed raced kids) is a racist. It's a shame because Waid actually wrote some of my favorite DC stories in the early 00's, but it's clear the modern political landscape has completely taken over his sensibilities.

@@thexyouthxattack Aye. Waid's recent comics have been pretty poorly recieved and sold. His collaborations with Kwansa Osajyefo in particular have been a complete disaster, with his current "Ignited" comic series barely having 1000 copies shipped to comic stores, prior to the current virus situation. Those numbers are abysmal for someone who wrote some of DC's greats. Comichron shows that Ignited is among the bottom selling comics in the entire industry. At one point Kwansa held THE single worst selling comic of the month. (Though to be fair, I do not recall if Waid himself was on that particular issue, might have just been one of Kwansa's solo books). Regardless, Waid is not bringing in the sales, success, or even quality that his name once used to represent in comics.

I'm all for pettiness and criticism and hostility but...yeah I went to a Con after KIngdom Come came out and waited in line for Waid to sign 2 books. I said "Hi, Mark" (a little less stilted than the guy in "The Room/Disaster Artist") when I got to the table. He looked up, wondering if I was a peer he should acknowledge (I guess since I dared call him by his first name); didn't recognize me and didn't say a word. Signed the books and slid them off to the side. Compare that to Neil Gaiman at the height of Sandman, spoke to me for 10 minutes despite a huge line.

"He sent a black wreath to Mark Alessi, who was the head of CrossGen Comics, after it went out of business. The wreath said "What would your wife think of you now?" because Alessi's wife had died a few years before. Basically, Mark Waid had a grudge against Alessi and took the opportunity to do the cuntiest thing he could think of, rubbing Alessi's nose in the business going under, even though that meant 60 people who Mark Waid was supposedly friends with were also out of work."

What a terrible legacy you left behind. You used to be a legend in the comic world. So many classics. Then you turned on your partners, hid behind a keyboard, and became a true SJW Twitter warrior. You couldn't just let people branch out. You had to intervene because you want others to be as miserable as you.

I may be in the minority here, but as someone who does not ship Superman and Wonder Woman (dare I say I hate it), Mark Waid describing "Kingdom Come" as a cautionary fable, "it's not a prophesy," and "we don't want things to end up like that" makes reading this story so much easier. It let's me know that this really is a what-if scenario, and not the definitive way that DC will end. I know people who love this story and probably love SMWW will despise me for saying that but that's just how I feel. "Kingdom Come" and Mark Waid are what showed me the potential of Elseworld stories and what a writer can do when not held down by canon. In case anyone was wondering, I am a Batman and Wonder Woman guy (now and forever), but I would be a fool to say this story sucks just because it has my least favorite ship which isn't even thrown in your face or the primary focus (it's more of a last minute thing). And given the context of "this particular" story, my ship wouldn't have made sense. This cannot be the way it ends for DC for a multitude of reasons. #1 so many deaths of beloved characters meant to drive the plot and indicate that this is a cautionary fable. #2 this depressing (I mean that in a good way) future scenario is meant to be a critic of the rise of antiheroes back in the 90s, so the story is a product of it's time, which is really interesting. #3 the heroes are divided into factions that despise and seemingly wish to destroy each other instead of being united. I don't want to spoil too much but that's a few things that I will point out. When people tell me "'Kingdom Come' should be the future of DC," I can't help but tell them they're wrong and it's a story, like Mark says, about how things shouldn't be if we are not careful. And that's beautiful. I'll just leave it there. Thanks for reading my thoughts. Have a good day! ;)

Kingdom Come is probably (with Miller's DK universe) a truer picture of humanity and how we truly behave. Not a prophecy? Have you seen how crazy 2020 has been? Kingdom Come's greatness is a willingness to truly show heroes with flaws and the journey to try to overcome. Not the usual deux ex machina stuff that always happen in comics ( esp Superman) . If DC and WB were smart it would be a 2 parter animated and or go to the big screen or a mini series.
