I'm also largely on the "love" side of the tutorial/prologue of KH2. Sure it's tedious as hell on replays, when you might not care about the story as much. But that's just what i love about the section, the story. It's just the right tone and amount of weird and surreal that i honestly wish more of the series actually would have. It should also be noted that i'm one of those people who prefers the series's original content over the Disney or even Final Fantasy stuff. All weirdness and dumbness included. Oh and also the fact that Roxas is a much better character than Sora in nearly every god damn way. From appearance, to personality, to arguably voice i'd say. While a byproduct of Sora himself, his nature makes him a lot more directly involved with the plot and setting that Sora ever could, no matter how much garbage they quite literally shove inside the boy.

Kingdom Hearts is like......pizza with some strange toppings on top and it's covered with melted dripping cheese.... but it tastes so good. People may give you strange looks to eating and enjoying said pizza, but they won't understand till they taste the pizza as well. You also need the garlic bread, chips, chicken strips and coke to enjoy and understand the whole meal. You may also feel guilty due to all this fast food, but you know it's good. Now I'm hungry.....

I tried the pizza, and found it too overwhelming. The medley of way too many branching narratives, confusing plot lines, bizarre character introductions and back stories, makes the Kingdom Hearts pizza a mess. You try to take a bite, and everything falls off one end. To get it, you have to use your fingers to scoop up clumps of it. And even when you do get a proper mouth full, its spoiled by the overwhelming amount of cheesy content. And then the person who made the pizza slaps you upside the head because you didn't order the pizza he wanted to make and forces you to buy another one off of the frankly disgustingly large menu just to get the 'proper experience.'

I commend you on catching how the Organization members are inspired by FF classes, but did you notice their powers are based on FF spells? Of course there's the obvious: Axel is fire, Larxene is thunder, Vexen is ice, easy peasy. But then you get to more exoteric ones, like Luxord being the Stop spells, Xigbar being the Gravity spells, and Xemnas being the Reflect spells.

The opening of KH2 in my opinion is probably the most masterful bit of storytelling in the series. It really sells what a day in this false life of Roxas is like. He has friends and homework and a rival and a community. He gets a part time job and helps out people. He has a connection to the town. It really does feel like a place Roxas has lived in his whole life. So for him to find out it's all fabricated, that he's not even a full person and that the only thing that he can really do is surrender himself to become a footnote in someone else's story? That's incredibly heartbreaking. It's a tragedy beyond words, and to me it was so effective because you spend so much time fucking around in Twilight Town. It's how you feel the loss of the life that Roxas had, one away from the organization and from the shadow of Sora and the struggle between light and dark. He got to be a kid. And then... Summer Vacation ends. Always hits me with a little tonal whiplash when the music turns so bright, happy and cheery afterwards. Although I'm glad we get that little moment where Hayner, Pence and Olette see Sora out of town. You really do get the feeling that Roxas's heart connected with theirs, despite the fact that they don't really even know him.

One of my best memories of KH2 comes from a certain Final Fantasy character appearing in Herc's world. Imagine you are a child having just finishing FFX and your favorite character was Auron. After dealing with the sadness from that game you get to play KH2 and low and behold Auron appears. It made me feel like Auron, though dead, was always looking out for me. And those memories from his voodoo doll. Also... that ending scene in the credits. ;n;

Clemps, old buddy, old bean, I think the game is trying to imply that Sora is so hostile to the Organization members because of Roxas, who knows all of them and hates them all with a passion, and his emotions are getting passed on to Sora. If you ask me, that makes a lot of sense, because otherwise I would agree with your point 100%.

Xigbar's remark to sora "That's right, HE used to give me the same exact look" is him referring to Ventus, because he has some memories of his time as a somebody Braig, and his encounter with said keyblade wielder in birth by sleep. This is expounded upon in a scene in 358/2 with him in a fight against Xion. Watch the cutscenes on KZbin, or the "movie" representing 358/2 in the 1.5 & 2.5 remix collection on ps4 to see what I mean.

I played 358/2 before KH2 and never played through the original at the time, nor CoM for that matter, so I had ZERO knowledge of the original events or who Sora was, aside from the BARE basics (mc, keblade wielder,etc.) Because of this, I had a really cool time with the tutorial. It was almost as if I was playing the closest possible thing to Roxas' perspective, discovering everything along with him and feeling the same sense of unease and mystery because I, like him, didn't have the full picture. Like, it's already hard enough watching Sora and co. dancing like idiots right after Roxas has to go away. Now imagine me, essentially AS Roxas, being forced to give up everything I am without a say, resigning myself to fate because the deception of my captors has left me with no choice but assimilation, and then watching the guy I know *almost nothing about* using the gift of my existence to jump around like a doofus with the super cool amazing friends he's actually allowed to have. Talk about a fucking downer. And to think about the way normal fans say that the scene is bittersweet, that shit was a blow for me. Not to mention I had no idea how worlds worked in mainline games, so I assumed all of the worlds would have Twilight Town's level of length and depth, which had me excited. Looking back it was actually really amazing, and an interesting look at how complex game narratives can create really unique player experiences. Roxas' role and his ties to the organization in the game is supposed to provide a constant feeling of mystique as Sora must learn about the organization and nobodies. But what I find fascinating is that, by shuffling that order and making the player intimately familiar with that aspect of the world but totally ignorant to Sora and his past (the "Roxas route"), it provides a complelety different, parallel element of mystique that still proves incredibly effective and fulfills the same purpose throughout the game. It's weird to say, but I'm actually really happy I got to interact with and discover the story in the way that I did.

It's very dumb. Drives aren't even that good! Wisdom is quickly outclassed, Valor becomes a liability due to eliminating mana use, Limit is situational and useless without Ethers, and Master/Final both eat up drive bars like no tomorrow. Compared to how absurdly broken some summons are (Read: Everyone but Genie) Drives almost always represented just a heal and mana refill in hard fights. I found myself reverting earlier and earlier, to the point where I would just switch them off immediately after using. That, and Anti Form COMPLETELY fucks you if you get it in a difficult boss fight. Good lord how frustrating. I stopped using forms entirely until I got Final so I could stop becoming Anti ever goddamn time. I can see what Nomura was going for, and it could've been a really interesting risk-reward mechanic, but instead they made him underpowered as shit. No healing period, hit combos which leave me vulnerable in patches, extra damage AND no defensive ability? Boy it's really fun to run around in circles for 2 minutes until I revert or die. He's not well-balanced for Critical at all.

"Limit is situational and useless without Ethers" What? Limit has ars abuse. Even if you don't use ethers, you can rack up some huge damage even at level 1. That and Zantetsuken. Well, it does involve missing the last hit on purpose, so I guess it's understandable you don't think that highly of it . "Master/Final both eat up drive bars like no tomorrow" This one is true, but Final is worth it as long as you know what you are doing. Some of the highest damage output comboes. And about your grievances with Valor and Wisdom, I tend to agree, although Wisdom is actually still useful even late game on some rather specific scenarios(read Firaga abuse vs some of the datas, although Final is still more effective if you know what you are doing. Minus Demyx Data, you kinda need to use wisdom there), but Valor really does become way more situational because it has no magic or guard. It's weird that you don't seem to think Genie is broken. Well, he did get a nerf in the FM version, but he can still rack up insane ammounts of damage with his limits, also has a lot of stun attacks. They are kind of the only summon limits worth doing. Stitch is god mode vs mobs due to mp regen, Chicken little is god mode against mobs *early game* because of his whistling(after you have your own magnet, he is significantly worse), but I wouldn;t really call them broken. Peter Pan can stun some bosses hard and double life is nice, I guess, but I really don't think he is as useful as Genie in most scenarios. EDIT: No intention of being condescending or saying Drives are broken, rather KH2FM is a pretty great, well-designed game where most things are useful at the right moment.

Yeah this is my first time playing Final Mix, and the first time I've replayed KH2 since I was a kid. Since I wrote that comment I learned just how insane Limit Form can be. I was just led astray by its lack of mobility and slowish combos. That, and I didn't internalize that limits have flat MP costs. I leveled up my MP a bar a few times and suddenly I can use 3 limits without running out of mana! Also didn't realize that limits heal you, which coupled with his absurdly good MP rage makes for impressive sustain. Add to that the fact that the near-invincible limits do huge damage and finish bosses off... yeah. Safe to say I was wrong on that one. Final form is obviously super good, no question about that. Master form has nice AoE, but I've yet to find much of a use for Wisdom/Valor outside of very specific scenarios Genie, I have to concede I have no idea how to use. Every time I use him I just end up taking a bunch of damage fiddling through the menus, activate a limit and do some damage, and then eventually he just leaves. I never took the time to figure him out. My goto is Stitch, who I think is just ludicrously good. Functionally infinite mana bars, stunning bosses out of patterns from a safe distance, negating damage, spawning tons of health drops, even a tiny handful of which can lead to several extra procs of Once More and Second Chance. Everything he does is crazy. I was fighting Lexaeus pretty underleveled and Stitch carried me completely through the last 3rd of his HP. He'd stun him out of his scary unapproachable combos, constantly saving me from lethal damage with hp orbs, gunshots and free mana bars. I swear he gave me 12 mana bars in the span of a minute and a half. I totally agree with the balance being extremely good for a PS2 game though. Nearly everything has its place. Even the keyblades, I've used almost all of them at least once for something. Barring some speed bumps and baffling design choices (no rematching fights immediately, c'mon now) I've been having a blast.

I played KH2 back when it first came out, and I'd been COMPLETELY out of the KH series ever since then.... until I recently got inspired to get the two HD collections on PS4, and BOY I really love these games. Sure there are parts of the story that you just gotta laugh and slap your knee at, but there are also genuinely well done moments and character arcs (RIKU ;__; ). If you're someone who can appreciate (or at least tolerate) that specific brand of anime cheesiness, you can find something to like in this series.

Something i sometimes cherish is how i FELT at the end of Roxas's story in the opening of KH2. Once Roxas accepts his fate being reemerged with Sora you can't help but feel empathetic to his plight and this hit me harder then i think the scene was intended to. Because throughout a majority of the game I felt this sense of loss for a character who was barely in the grand scheme of KH2 but whom i empathized with far more then i did Sora. The tonal whiplash i got from going from Depressing to Sugary Sweet fun times was a bit painful emotionally to say the least.

I thought the reason Roxas could dual wield keyblades was revealed in 358/2 Days. I mean, a plot point in BBS could definitely be the reason, but I think I remember the reason being explicitly shown in 358/2 Days, though I am not entirely sure on this. I'd have to rewatch those cutscenes. Also, as for Sora's attitude toward the Nobodies, I think that it may actually be Roxas who is causing him to act the way that he does for most of the game. Roxas's aggression toward the Organization is so strong that he's infecting Sora with it. I think this may be the case since Roxas's emotions surfacing was shown with Sora crying when he was about to leave Twilight Town.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER Here's my belief: Sora can actually wield 4 keyblades, because there are 3 other person inside him, which is Roxas, Xion, and Ventus, all of them keyblade wielders. You may want to argue that Sora, Xion, and Roxas is basically Sora which means it's only Sora and Ventus. However, do remember that Roxas can also dual wield, and he can only do that after Xion gets merged. Which means Roxas and Xion actually counts as separate keyblade wielders.

Spoiler Roxas can dual wield due the fact that Sora can wield a keyblade & a heart connected to him aka is inside him of a person called Ventus (who is a keyblade wielder) allows him to use 2. (Essencially due Ventus being inside his hearth Sora was able to use the Keyblade at all due the fact he never was choosen by the Keyblade itself as a candidate wielder only due the events of KH1 where the Keyblade chooses him due Riku falling into darkness) The reason why Roxas can use 2 later is due the fact that Xion is only a puppet stealing from Sora trough Roxas which allowed her to pull Ventus power aka his Keyblade out of him. So basiclly Roxas can use Soras right to use the Keyblade while Xion uses Ventus power to use his Keyblade. Why they do tranform later into a black & white one? Well basiclly the white one is representing Roxas while the black one has all that`s what left of Xion even tho at this point nobody remembers her.

One little thing I've always appreciated about the return to the Disney worlds for the second time is that the keyblade you got your first time around will be advantageous for the boss fight or world. For example the first time you go to Pirates of the Carribean, you get a keyblade that draws in orbs. Then the 2nd time you go there, the boss requires you to splat it like a pinata and gather all the orbs.

Finally I see someone explain perfectly why I loved Roxas’ part so much. It builds up Sora’s return while giving you a tragic story of someone who lost everything for the greater good, it’s all so bittersweet. You even incleded the line “You’re lucky, looks like my summer vacation is... over” , for me the most memorable line in the whole game. It always got me especially as a child who thought summer was the best thing ever.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is where the series ends for me. Sure, there's a few loose threads, but Sora gets home to the Destiny Islands and reunites with Donald, Goofy, Mickey, Riku and Kairi. He completes his task that he set out to accomplish at the end of KH1: Get his friends home. And now he can rest and be with them.

I'm surprised you didn't mention how dirty they did vivi in this game. He's the only ff9 character hanging around some ff8 losers then gets kicked out because of scifer's ego, and roams the forest by himself for the rest of the game. Also sora's attitude towards to organization is vastly disliked by the hardcore kh community those who see sora as kindhearted to a fault even to some enemies and think this sora is a bit out of cahracter in terms of how harshly he reacts to them.

Rewatching this video and your point about the fight with Roxas in The World That Never Was is absolutely true. I played on Proud Mode (because I tried Critical Mode and fuck that), and that fight had me frustrated for at least 2 dozen times. But that feeling of actually working around his attacks and FINALLY beating him was amazing. Hell, I one shot Xemnas while my roommate said I'd have even more trouble.
