Kingdom Hearts Final Mix: Easter Eggs & Hidden Details #18- Agrabah NPCs

Welcome to episode 18 of Kingdom Hearts Easter Eggs & Hidden Details.
Today we have a very cool little episode documenting the NPCs (Non-playable characters, slang for computer game character that we don't control) of Agrabah that appear right after sealing the keyhole of this world, and vanish, never to return, if we leave Agrabah after sealing its keyhole. So this is a very specific point in the game, but it makes sense since characters never appear in areas with Heartless and the only time a world is free of Heartless is right after sealing the keyhole. Because it's so specific, theres a good chance you have never seen all these characters.
There are 3 of these characters in total. The first is in the Plaza (the area just before the Desert), and manning the stall here outside the Storage Room is a vendor that resembles the Accessory Shop clerk from Traverse Town (who runs the Accessory Shop after our 2nd visit to Traverse Town in Cids absence, since he then works with Gummis instead just outside the door leading the the Moogle Workshop).
Next we have a lady dressed in purple in Agrabah's Alley who shares the same model as the lady in green who stand along the wall just outside the Cafe in Traverse Town's 1st District.
And finally in the Palace Gates area, we have another NPC standing behind the corner stall, who this time is Agrabah's version of Wakka from Destiny Islands.

Don't forget that the merchant from KH2/movie actually made his first appearance in Kh1.... Free the carpet at Aladdin's house, before meeting jasmine for the first time, leave the house and immediately come back in and he's there selling some items lol

Simple answer is because it's a video game. After sealing the keyhole there is no reason for the party to return to the world's from a story perspective but since this is a game (specifically a jrpg) we can return to the world whenever we want to and bringing back the heartless is mainly there for gameplay since the story is already finished

Video game logic dictates that if people are there, heartless can't be there. So if we want to come back here to fight heartless, the NPCs have to vanish

They don't. They appear once you seal the keyhole, but vanish after you go to another world to continue the story

Do they offer anything? Like a unique item, or sell anything? I really hate that stuff in rpgs, when if you don't check in this one random area, this specific time, you never get a chance again. In original KH, green trinity was in Oogie Boogie's castle, then when it's gone, if you missed it, tough luck. A lot of stuff like that during the ps1 era.

I remember when that shopkeeper was also seen running from a Heartless in a cutscene. And his heart was sadly taken. Disturbing KH scene! Great memories though ❤

I believe there’s yet another one with that same model in District 1 beside the door leading to District 3 who asks “You think you’ve seen me somewhere before?” I’m fairly certain that’s referencing the NPC in the scene you talked about.

@@thetronwarriors4817 That's the obvious assumption to make in retrospect, but nobodies first of all didn't exist yet, and secondly they're meant to have their memories, but the multiple versions of this guy don't seem to share a memory.

@@thetronwarriors4817 nobodies don't resemble the former being unless they got really strong or special hearts or something, I'm not too clear on it and we know why Sora's looks like Ventus, why Namine doesn't resemble Kairi is odd although explained I think, but yeah I doubt this random npc has a heart special or strong enough lmao

Kh1 has a few moments that feel like they started adding some extras, realized they ether lacked the time or it was a lot of work for too small a carrot, and only implemented what they started with. Like I know at some strange point in the story if you go back to wonderland everyone's dialog updates.

That’s pretty common for games. It’s basically a glitch or an issue with the coding. It was probably never fixed because either it was so inconsequential that they didn’t want to waste time fixing it or they never noticed it. And back in the day, before online updates, any glitch would be permanent.

It is a neat bonus to find other characters actually roaming in the populated areas. One of the flack that the KH series got (before KH3 that is) was that the worlds felt obviously empty.

Not KH1, surely. The maps are generally designed with puzzles and NPCs in mind, excluding some rooms that are just battlegrounds.

@@mann-nova9392 yeah KH1 did "try" even with its clunky controls. But it was neat seeing areas kinda populated. After that and in every game til kh3, each room felt like a battle arena.

It makes sense that their models are recycled. No need to spend much time and money on a couple of NPCs that only show up for a brief moment and are easily missable.

They really should've had more NPCs in the worlds (AND DON'T MAKE THEM VANISH AFTER YOU LEAVE), it would've made the worlds feel less empty.

I knew of the shopkeeper in the plaza as I saw him when I went to save my game in the storage room, but I didn’t see the other NPCs. I thought that it was weird but a cool little Easter Egg (though I did not know that it was an Easter Egg when I saw him).

They should have compromised and had one area in Agrabah where NPCs stayed “safe” (I’d go with the entrance as it’s a small arena anyway). Halloween Town and TT have safe areas where there’s usually NPCs.
