Yes, yes it does. What the games do well, they make playing enjoyable. But what the games mess up, they couldn't fix across 10, 11 or 12 titles however many there have been. Cause the creators are pretentious. If they had just made the story linear and creating new characters by just going forward instead of ret-con I think it could've been in a more better shape. Personally looking at it I think the creators are lazy at story telling. Nothings wrong with revealing a bit of history for your story but to do it constantly is lazy and boring nonsense when it makes no sense. Still there is a lot that should be chopped.

Metal Gear Solid is a precautionary tale about the need for nuclear disarmament that expanded its message to the general dangers of an arms race to war. All the twists and turns within the plot across several game lead to or exist within that message. Kingdom Hearts never had a message, it was just a flex of Disney and Squaresoft while Tetsuya Nomura got free reign to make a bunch of shallow pretentious weird shit while trying to seem deep.

It was supposed to be focused on the already-established characters of the two properties, with Sora and a bit of gang as the fresh introduction and to give the player a few characters to care about on a more personal level. That's why KH1 was enjoyable and KH2 was meh and it only got worse from there. They strayed away from the original concept and went full fanfiction. BTW I fully expect Jim to get some flak from KH fans for this. But you know what, this is one of those situations where we wouldn't give a shit about what state the game was in if we didn't have actual love for it in the first place. So fuck 'em.

Gameplay-wise, it's fantastic. Story-wise, it's like playing through the fever dreams of a madman. Once we reached the point where we had dozens of versions of Sora, Riku, Xehanort and Kairi running around, journals and heartless were being digitized into mainframes, and the main villain was just casually time-travelling to bring multiple versions of himself into the present, the cup had runneth over.

The reason this shit all happened is because Nomura thinks that "theory-baiting" is a valid excuse for having an unresolved and overcomplicated story. He has admitted to deliberately leaving his games filled with plot holes and other unresolved easter eggs just to keep fans guessing (regardless of whether those easter eggs make any sense or even end up compromising the player's investment in the story). Only THEN does he start coming up with answers to half of those plot holes--answers which only end up opening yet ANOTHER can of plot holes. Rinse and repeat. He also designs them to be as contrary to fan expectations/theories as possible, because he thinks that "surprising" people is more important than providing them with a satisfying experience. He's the game industry equivalent of Rian Johnson, with somehow even less talent.

Yes, it was a bit tough to follow, but was actually understandable until you hit 2's midway point. *Then* was when it all went to shit. And I say this as a fan of both Disney and FF and as someone who played the first three games released: Avoid caring about the plot. If you want an action RPG, it's a fine gateway game. If you want engaging and good writing, go get Horizon as gateway to this genre.

Nomura seems to retcon his own story on every occasion. In KH1 the villain was named Ansem and he was a researcher who got a little too curious and fell to darkness. In KH2, actually he wasn't Ansem, he was actually a heartless made from another guy named Xehanort who took the name of the real Ansem. And he also has another version of him which is a nobody called Xemnas. His goal is to make all the Nobdies become real by using Kingdom Hearts to.... No wait! Actually his real goal was to use the Keeeeey-blade to destroy the whole universe by using the Nobodies as vessels for his own heart darkness and somehow that causes the Keeeey-blade to appear for no reason and actually Ansem in KH1's original goal was to travel back in time to tell his young self to time travel..... This is just one example of how every two minutes Nomura retcons stuff that he wrote, it's fucking awful. Also, Kingdom Hearts was just that one door in KHI, but in 0.2 we learn that was all bullshit and that was a fake kingdom hearts even though the whole point was that the real Kingdom Hearts was light not darkness, like that was the whole ending of the game, but we have to undo that so we can have a scene explaining why Mickey was shirtless in the ending of KH1.

I'm still wondering why he went through all that when he could've just made another Ventus/Vanitas xblade which unless i'm missing something creates the exact same key he needs with a whole lot less work, Vanitas is seriously OP with all the Unversed he has It really just looks like an overedited mess.. oh and Xehanort was appearently a good guy that wanted to save the world from darkness :D Idk it felt like Disney dictated the direction too much and as a result we got a short rushed happy ending for almost everyone where everything is magically okay with most of the story being an ad for KH3.02? @@ZDehuman1ze I think the problem with the original plan boils down to the ratio of light and darkness. 50-50 wasn't the proper ratio. 7 lights to 13 darknesses was. It's kinda like cooking a recipe. Sure, you can be off on some ratios and still get food, but it may not be as tasty as it could be. But tbh, it's just a plot device to arbitrarily link the magic numbers of 7 and 13 from the previous two main games and nothing more.

It's possible to create a good story with a deep, complex world. Look at lord of the rings, star wars, or early elder scrolls games for example. But what do these examples have in common? Why do they work while Kingdom Hearts fails? Because they kept the SURFACE narrative simple. They encourage us to dig deeper without forcing us to do so. You can enjoy lord of the rings without any knowledge of the mythology of the world. The original star wars trilogy didnt spend hours explaining the history of the sith, or the formation of the republic. In fact, they didnt explain shit after the opening crawl. The moral is that if you want to tell an epic story, your narrative needs to have layers. Dont just vomit all sorts of expository bullshit that you haven't earned. Make the surface narrative simple and easy to follow. If your world is interesting enough, and the characters likable enough, then people will NATURALLY search for more.

This makes me realize a good point about Square Enix. They really like overcomplicating things. And it's not a new things at all. Even as Squaresoft, before all this. they were making every new FF more ridiculous and complicated than the last. Just they still had sort of a grip on things and it hadn't gone "too far" yet. The 32 bit era had a ton of jRPG with convoluted bloated stories. Chrono Cross, Xenogears, Vagrant Story, etc. KH is a really good indication that SE don't know the line between enough and too much. Kingdom Hearts is what happens when someone who designs characters and has never really played a Final Fantasy game (in this case Nomura) is tasked with creating a series from scratch. Nomura is a fantastic character artist, but he's an absolutely awful writer. Just about every bit of convoluted bullshit in the modern Square Enix library post-FFX can be blamed on Nomura writing by the seat of his pants. It's why Kingdom Hearts is kudzu plot incarnate, and why Final Fantasy XV languished in development hell for almost 6 years before being rebooted into the more streamlined story that it is. People weren't looking forward to KHIII because the series is perfect. They were looking forward to it just to finally be done with the story after almost 20 years of sequels and prequels throwing the plot into a snarl.

The reason this shit all happened is because Nomura thinks that "theory-baiting" is a valid excuse for having an unresolved and overcomplicated story. He has admitted to deliberately leaving his games filled with plot holes and other unresolved easter eggs just to keep fans guessing (regardless of whether those easter eggs make any sense or even end up compromising the player's investment in the story). Only THEN does he start coming up with answers to half of those plot holes--answers which only end up opening yet ANOTHER can of plot holes. Rinse and repeat. He also designs them to be as contrary to fan expectations/theories as possible, because he thinks that "surprising" people is more important than providing them with a satisfying experience. He's the game industry equivalent of Rian Johnson, with somehow even less talent.

As a long time Kingdom Hearts fan who bought the remixes to catch up on the story, this is both very hilarious and very accurate. Then again, to be fair, part of the reason I love the series is because it is so absolutely bizarre. There really is nothing else like it. Nothing like a serious scene, meant to be portrayed as edgy and dramatic as possible to reveal some sort of plot twist or add to the lore, being interrupted by the sound of Mickey Mouse spouting something or other about the light in people's hearts. Or when they tackle worlds like Pirates of the Caribbean, where there's undead pirates, the whole medallion ritual, and in the background is Goofy just standing there like "Hyuck, what the fuck? Should we even be here?" Pro Tip : Grab some friends with a sense of humor, grab some drinks and snacks, find one of those cutscene compilations of one of the games that you haven't played in a while, and just riff into it. Oh thank God someone Cynical about the KH series!! I have been a fan of KH since 2003 but Goddamn am I burnt out! I feel so tired sometimes having to read about all the damn side content Nomura THINKS we need but in truth NEVER needed in the first place!! I feel it should of ended after KH3 and that KHUx should of just remained a spin off, with maybe a couple of references in the main series because it does tell the tale of the Keyblade war to set it all up, but no, they out Ventus in it as well as the somebodies of Marluxia and Larxine to crate more mystery, have a traitor plot with the fortellers, Ithe union leaders who the player hardly interacts with, introduce a charicter literally nobody has ANY meaningful interactions with and then kill her off after a few cutscenes to set up another traitor mystery within the union leaders and is a plot thread that remains virtually untouched for about 1-2 years at least and then, suprise! She's Marluxia's somebody's sister, For fuck's sake.... There's just too many unanswered questions... And KH3 doesn't help with it's cliffhangers and a seemingly a seemingly rushed climax which only works because the charicters are idiots most of the time in the final battles ((look at the Terra Xehanort first battle, everyone just stands there doing nothing while he bodies them, not even trying to fight back, Ven, Kiari and Lea have excuses, they just woke up or just got trained , but Riku, Micky, Final and Goody do literally nothing when Sora's keyblade is caught by Terra Xehanort for a good 5 seconds)) I could go on...

This is the problem with Tetsuya Nomura: games in development for way too long and convoluted plots. He was behind FFXV which was originally going to be "Final Fantasy Versus XIII" and was announced BEFORE Final Fantasy XIII ever was and nonetheless came out after that game managed to not only release but have a trilogy of games come out. Personally I just imagined Kingdom Hearts III would be out sooner than this but given the amount of spin-offs that I didn't care about have come out since I played Kingdom Hearts II in High School, I just can't bother to care about the series anymore. I have a handful of games in my backlog I have to finish and that'll be plenty of hours on it's own but I cannot imagine trying to catch back up with the series by actually buying and playing all the games.

While Nomura has many issues as a director, Versus turning out the way it did was not entirely his fault. His team had to struggle with SE's poor management and their garbage Crystal Tools engine, which made it a pain in the ass to make the game they wanted to make. They had to wait for an entirely new game engine, Luminous, to be developed so they could finish the game. He did have some responsibility for that fiasco though; like seriously the guy wanted to turn the game into a musical after seeing Les Mis pretty late into development...

I'm caught up on the series and I'm just really not psyched for KH3 at all. Like... over thirteen years since KH2's release? We've had a ton of side games that just bloat the shit out of the plot and feature all the bad writing and game design issues that I never thought would be possible after KH1 and CoM. Not to mention the lead up to KH3 is nowhere near as good as what KH1's ending and CoM built. How do I know KH3 won't have the same bad writing, level design, and difficulty balance of KH2? DDD certainly had all the same issues, and that's the most recent one.

I've always liked Kingdom Hearts, yet I know the story and the way they've released it are both utter horseshit. Save for maybe the first game where the story is pretty self contained and straight forward, the story of Kingdom Hearts is needlessly complicated for the sake of being complicated...Or, should I say, it's a pretty straight forward story that is told in the most incoherent way possible both in terms of writing and multiple important parts of the story being released across multiple different systems. Like, at what point did any of this shit seem like a good idea? As for the Disney bits: they're pretty fucking awful and always have been. Watered down TL:DR versions of the script from the movie they're based on except the villain of the movie is a heartless. Even in sequels it's not uncommon for returning worlds to have the story to be based again on the first movie, stretching out what little they had to the point of absurdity. The only good parts that involve Disney are when they actually did something unique with what they had instead of just giving us a shit version of a movie we've already seen. Seeing as outside of the Disney worlds we didn't see many Disney characters, there wasn't much of this. - Donald and Goofy? They're great given they're basically entirely new re-imaginings of the characters specifically for Kingdom Hearts, alongside Chip&Dale, Mickey, Minnie and Daisy. - Pinocchio and Beast in the first game served more of a purpose than just a shit retelling of their movies. These characters were actually properly incorporated into the world and story of Kingdom Hearts rather than just being a bit of filler because games need levels...Shame both of these characters/worlds became a shitty like the rest of the worlds in the sequels. - The Disney Princesses again were properly written in. "We need the heart of princesses, who just happen to be the Disney Princess's, oh and the original character (do not steal) Kairi is also one of them!". Not fantastic, but at least properly doing something unique with the source material. - The Hercules levels are utter trash in terms of story, but Hades hires Cloud to destroy Hercules. No bullshit, Hades didn't turn out to be a heartless, it was just some actual fucking crossover...A rarity in a game that's selling point is literally that it's a crossover. The combat, the enemy and world design, the set pieces, soundtrack, these are the things that keep bringing me back to Kingdom Hearts. The story though? Sure, I'll follow it, but I'm not for a moment going to pretend it's good or even a well made crossover.

Other than Kingdom Hearts 3, It’s only 9 games. And the HD remixes make it easier as it turns 3 of those games into movies. So in reality, you got 7 games when including KH3. I admit I care more for KH original storyline than the crossovers themselves, but I also "read" it as I read academic texts for college: filtering out 70% of the words to keep only the core ideas. I don't remember too many details, but I don't get too lost in the gibberish thanks to that. (Because honestly? In the end the plot to Kingdom Hearts isn't all that bad, it's just that it needed some planning and not just submit the first drafts and make them into the actual game plot. The peak of that "make stuff up as you go" method peaks in Kingdom Hearts Coded, a game that is so goddamn pointless even for Kingdom Hearts standards it's unbelievable. It's a story about (even more) magical Jedi, a creepy body-snatching old dude and the usual gist of the youth fixing the problems the old generation left them, and yet it got so complicated because nobody probably even proofread the scripts. And get this: Square Enix said that Kingdom Hearts III IS NOT THE END. It will be the end of the "Xehanort, Seeker of Darkness saga", but they said there could be future adventures starring Sora.
