From what I could gather, Riku got that ability as an aftermath of the whole Ansem possession and having ties to the darkness. I guess the blindfold stifles that a bit, but then after getting purified by the Kingdom Hearts Decoder, he was mostly light-sided from then on, so he just lost that ability.

That's not too far off, actually. The main sentiment he's expressing there is something along the lines of "the universe has just proven that everything I've ever believed for the past few years is wrong and honestly I kinda deserve it at this point", but also he's kinda holding on to a machine that he was using to try and digitize God and God is winning. He's about half a minute from literally being blasted into the shadow realm.

I think the Leon thing is because in Kingdom Hearts 1 Mickey’s letter tells Donald and Goofy to look for Leon. Then after Sora fights Squall and passes out they reveal to the player that Squall is Leon through his dialogue with Yuffie. So it seems to be so the player wouldn’t know that they’re looking for Squall until he’s actually seen.
