The non-Director's cut was what they reviewed, unfortunately. Which is a less complete version and makes the story cut somewhat nonsensical.

The director's cut is just a diffrent movie from the one they put out. They just cut it really badly, and the film is really good even when historically inaccurate.

What the king says over the chess game still resonates with me today. Yes it's a movie but those lines "when you stand before God you cannot say, but I was told to do thus. Or that virtue was not convient at the time."

The scene where the German knight says : "I say he is innocent of the charges, if you say he is guilty - we will fight and the god will decide truth of it." is spot on! Medieval court was quick - if you had a disagreement with someone it could have been decided with a duel. The idea was that god would not let a righteous man die...ofcourse it took a while to realize that swordsmanship miiiiiiight often let the not so righteous man win. 😁

Glad you’re seeing the Director’s Cut, it actually makes a difference of how good this movie was. Critics gave the theatrical version a bad rating only to then come around and say the extended director’s cut was so much better even to the extent of giving the film a positive rate.

Kingdom of Heaven might not be historically accurate at times but it captures the essence of the Crusades. And it is THE definitive portrayal of Saladin in film. I would have KILLED for a sequel with Saladin fighting his most famous adversary: Richard the Lionheart, King of England (who we see at the end!)

The Baron de Ibelin was a real person who led the defense of Jerusalem in 1187. The big historical inaccuracy is that he was not a blacksmith or illegitimate child but was raised by his father Barisan of Ibelin. He married the heiress of Ramla, Helvis. Him being a bastard is my one (big) dislike for this movie because it creates other problems. Even if his father had “knighted” him and declared him baron he would have been removed as an illegitimate child. His succession would not have been accepted and the king would have removed him of his fathers title and given it to someone else. He also had two brothers. Other than that it’s still an epic of a movie.

Love this film . Really great how they showed both sides of things . I have read a lot about this time period and especially Saladin and King Richard . Even though its not historically accurate i still think it does a good job of telling a story that overall gives a good sense of things. That felt like the Saladin i have read about in History. They had great actors playing the Muslims.

If you weren't watching the directors cut, this whole review would in 1 part. So glad you're watching this version. A large part of what they put back in - all the characters motivations (of several key characters, not just Balian) - were cut from the theatrical run because they wanted a shorter run-time, but wanted to keep all the action set-pieces they spent huge amounts of money on. The theatrical cut was mess and you didn't care about anyone because you had no idea who most of the people were and what motivated them

The big guy at the beginning is Jouko Ahola, a Finnish Strong Man competitor and powerlifter. You can tell by his rally English accent where he comes from. Movies like this love big muscular guys, because they have the word "warrior" written all over them.

On your question of who was in control of Jerusalem at this time; before the Muslims took it (as depicted) it was controlled by the Kingdom of Jerusalem, which was a crusader state formed in the wake of the first crusade around 100 years prior to these events. It was founded by knights and nobles mainly from France, but also plenty from Germany, Italy and England. The Kingdom of Jerusalem actually lasted until 1291, even though after 1187 (date of events depicted) the actual city itself was in Muslim hands.

Blonde fella who was aiding Liam Neeson is David Thewlis. He plays Professor Lupin in Harry Potter :D the werewolf. Also Guy (or Gee however it's said...the King..) is Marton Csokas, he was very briefly in Lord of the Rings as Celeborn, Galadriel's husband! This film is jam packed with good people. I forgot Philip Glenister was in it..he's the dude that got shot in the face near the start. He's in a few shows here in the UK he's great. I'm glad you're enjoying Orlando. I believe he got his old dog from the set of this film, Sidi. I think they were a stray or something maybe. Adorable.

As many have pointed out it's historically inaccurate. However, it's a beautifully directed, top tier film. I can forgive it's historical inaccuracies because I feel it's a quality film with direction, visuals, cinematography at their top tier at the time, an interesting plot, and characters I liked. It's a damn shame the directors cut wasn't the theatrical release because Ridley Scott's true vision of the film probably would have nominated him for a lot of awards.

Yeah so the "I'll send you my physicians " is based off an actual event. Richard the lion heart knew how Islam worked and knew Saladin was devout Muslim. There is something in the Quran about having to help someone who asks for help. I'm not sure exactly but that's the jist. Anyways Richard had a fever for like two weeks and couldn't shake it and he knew that Saladin was obligated to help even his enemy if asked. So he sent Richard his personal physicians and broke the fever. True story. Crazy af I know. It's the same principle that saved ol boy from The Last Survivor. The reason the villagers helped him.
