I rather enjoy the fact that Majora doesn't get a lot of screen time as a villain. You get a sense of its presence by the destruction and pain it causes in the whole world. The fact that it's not always around taunting Link as Gannon did, makes it seem like Majora is so powerful that it doesn't even consider link a threat. In fact, MM doesn't even treat Link as a "hero" like OoT did. Hands down my favorite Zelda title.
@jmiquelmb7 жыл бұрын
Majora is a far better villain than Ganon ever expected to be. The only reason he was defeated was because a random kid form a paralel dimension got a magic ocarina that could traverse time. Termina was completely doomed if not for that incredibly unpredictable fact that was probably orchestrated by some higher deity.
@deadlikedisco47267 жыл бұрын
jmiquelmb Exactly how I feel. Hyrule felt so cliché as a story written by destiny, whereas Termina and its residents had accepted that their end had come with no hero to save them. Even Cremia was to give Romani some of the potent milk to keep her sedated through her untimely death. Majora didn't want to rule the world like Ganon, Majora just wanted to see it end in flames. A much darker, more evil entity overall.

small point: you mention that the bunny hood sidequest is a slog. But I think it's actually so brilliant. Correct me if I'm wrong but the Bremen mask is the only one that actually slows you down. And the whole setup, the guy who doesn't give a shit about the end of the world except for seeing his cuccoos grow, is designed to make you spend much more time doing what amounts to nothing than you would have otherwise. You're forced to take a minute with no good scenery, repetitive music, etc etc, and it's all this slow burn of nihilism. But the reward is the exact opposite: double speed all the time. A lot of the mask quests are like this. Garo: you gain entry to this club of honorable warriors by getting a mask worn by dishonorable fucker-thieves. Stone mask: you get the ability to hide from everyone by helping a guy who just wants to be seen for a change. etc etc These "ironic" quest set-ups cut right to the heart of MM. @Pokémon & FF fan Sure no one likes unnecessary edginess. That's what I didn't really like about TP. And yes OoT does give off that sense of urgency. I would say they also keep that motif of death and memory in there also. I think OoT could have done just a little bit more to emphasize that on a nuanced fashion like MM. I think where MM shines is that it is legitimately a weird wild adventure of a game. I think it helps that the antagonist isn't so much a person as much as it is an entity. And it pervades the world of termina in weird and wild ways. The game truly embraces it's eerie atmosphere and weird outlook through out the said journey. It's confident in what it is and it shows. The more serious motif's that the game shows are just a result of that said confidence. I hope that for BOTW 2 they are able to actually convey dark themes without being cringey. Because they can do it, and I hope they take notes on what they did right with MM.

41:30 I'm going to clarify this once and for all about OoT and Majora's Mask's sword combat systems because it's something that a lot of people completely misunderstand. Lots of people say there's no thought to it or that it's boring or badly designed. If you're just waiting around for an opening, then you're doing it wrong. The game is all about checks and balances. You can play it safe and keep your distance and wait until the enemy attacks you, which eventually gives an opening to attack. However, if you get closer to the enemies this causes them to attack more frequently and use a greater variety of attacks, which gives you more openings to attack. Try this out for yourself with the wolves. Keep your distance and wait for them to come to you. You'll see that they hang back and run around then attack you every so often. When they do attack, you're able to hit them from the front, and hitting their tail is difficult. Meaning, you have the slow boring combat everyone complains about. Now try walking right up in front of them (without raising your shield) and you'll see that this causes them to attack almost immediately. Since you're so close you're more likely to get hit so you have to roll or backflip out of the way. But if you do it right you can get behind them and hit their tail and do lots of damage. They also don't block your attacks as much when you stay near them. Similarly, if you keep your shield up the whole time, enemies know this and they don't attack as much. But if you keep your shield down, they attack more frequently, giving you more openings to counterattack and take them out quickly. It is like this with almost all enemies in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, especially the smarter ones like stalfos. In other words, you can play it safe but the trade off is it takes longer and isn't as exciting. Or you can play it risky and get close, but the trade off is you do more damage faster and the combat is more dynamic. It's actually a clever system because it gives you the chance to back off or retreat if you need to, and also allows less skilled players to still progress. Another perfect example of this is in the fight with Ganondorf at the end of OoT where he throws the spell at you and you have to hit it back at him with your sword. If you're too far away, he has no problem deflecting it back at you and can keep it up indefinitely. So you have to get closer in order to hit him with it--but getting close also gives you less time to react and is more dangerous. The entire combat system is balanced around this design philosophy and when you understand that, it will change how you experience game. Low risk = low reward.
@Spriteanimator14 жыл бұрын
"If you're just waiting around for an opening, then you're doing it wrong." No. You're doing exactly what is necessary to pull through the game without any kind of problems. The only problem may be not having fun but that's where the game should be criticized and not the player.
@JingIeFett4 жыл бұрын
@@Spriteanimator1 Wrong. It is not "necessary", that is your choice. You have health potions, you have fairies. When you're low on health, hearts drop more often from enemies and grass. YOU are the one choosing not to take risks, you're the one choosing to not experiment and try different strategies to find the one that works best. You SHOULD be criticized because you're using the same one strategy of "just waiting around for an opening" on all enemies and expecting it to work equally well, and then blaming the game when it doesn't. Meanwhile everyone else has it figured out and are just shaking their head. Example A: Wolfos. If you try to waiting for an opening with a wolfos, you'll be waiting all day and do minimal damage each attack. If you get close and get it to do its double swipe attack and dodge it, it spins around and reveals its tail and you can take it out in one hit. Proof: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZutk6SXa5igetk&ab_channel=ZeldaIGN Example B: Stalfos. This guy takes out two of them in 17 seconds with only 3 hearts and takes no damage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnikq2R5aalnbpI&ab_channel=SoCasualGaming Notice what he's doing against the stalfos? He's moving around, he's rolling, he's using the spin attack, and he's not even z-targeting. Notice how much more frequently the stalfos are attacking instead of keeping their shield up the whole time. Of course, playing like that requires that pesky little thing called skill...
@Spriteanimator14 жыл бұрын
@@JingIeFett The problem is that there is no real consequence for fighting the way I described. It is incredibly easy and that is what people are mostly criticizing. If a game wants to deliver good combat it has to give reasons to the player to flesh out the combat mechanics and the old Zeldas don't deliver. It's not that we don't understand what you're trying to explain, we just don't feel invited by the game to do it that. There are many games out there (especially tons of Beat 'em ups) with similar problems.
@JingIeFett4 жыл бұрын
@@Spriteanimator1 There is a consequence: it's less fun, and takes more time (plus time is critical in Majora's Mask). The game gives you multiple choices for how to play. You're the one choosing to play that way. If you don't like it, the onus is on you to try a different strategy that you find more enjoyable. You can choose to let all the abilities and items the game gives you go to waste by not using them but they're there for a reason.

Shame you weren't able to play the original for the Great Bay Temple. The one change in the 3D version I take the most issue with, is the change to ice arrows. In the original, ice arrows can be shot just about anywhere there's water - no sparkles to limit you. I'm always a fan of design that alters the world around you, but the change in the 3DS version felt a lot like hookshot points, specifically guiding you to play the way it wants you to. 41:50 - I don't claim to know that this is the case, but I always interpreted Link's interesting jumping animations in MM to be a reflection of the fact that he is a more experienced adventurer (and perhaps acrobat) because he has Ocarina of Time under his belt, so it didn't seem weird to me that those animations didn't carry over to later installments since most incarnations of Link only get one adventure. Even before Wind Waker came out, back when MM just released and I saw Link flip off those stumps in the intro for the very first time my mind immediately went to the idea that it was demonstrating the Hero of Time's experience from his previous journey in some way. I felt Majora's Mask as a villain was actually much better than you gave it credit for. Most of the atrocities committed in Termina were done by the Skull Kid/Majora's Mask. Kafei was cursed by skull kid, a witch was injured by him, the pirates were compelled by him to venture into dangerous murky water. You run into a lot of what Skull kid has done and how it has affected Termina. I always feel when I get to the top of the clock tower when I am about to summon the giants that I am facing the literal cause of all the terror in Termina. In the beginning it was just an imp with a mask; at the end you have seen what this imp has done and how menacing he is therefore.

@elgatochurro5 жыл бұрын
Yeah much more menacing than... well what ganons been given tbh, as much as i love Ganon hes got less work cut out for him as an Evil Villain than even Bowser, Bowser normally outright makes himself an enemy to Mario from the Start of his games normally. I can get the story structure and enjoy it, but OOT was just... a sadder Hyrule, a more corrupted Hyrule, more Monsters in Hyrule, the people feel like they've lost hope but they also fled to Kakiriko Village just... a short walk away from a zombie infested and burned town. i get the map is small but it didnt really feel that impactful other than losing the Castle and market, for... whats essentially the same market in the future. Majoras Mask actions and curses felt fuckin horrifying by comparison, the curse on you at the start, passing by the body of the poor sap he probably drained to curse you with, how helpless you are with it, and yet even after the mask salesman cleanses you of this bizarre condition with a yet even more bizarre method, it doenst ease up the questions and meaning behind it, the Gorons mask, Zoras Mask, both didnt make me go "YIPPIE I GET A NEW MASK" it was more sullen and sad to see them go, less so the Goron and his happy ending cause thats a more so good end but the Zora dies failing to complete his quest, hopeless and giving into despair. Kafei is just like you too, cursed with no cure, not even the good ending cures him of this new body... i can only assume he had the height and posture of a lady killer and now ashamed of what became of him. Skull kids actions really hit the mark on a lot of what some enemies tried in previous zeldas, affecting the world but actually being able to interact with the people of all kinds and backgrounds, like the sharp brothers to this random farm chick, to this Goron trying to get a room, and their problems... really helps you sympathize with them. not jsut that you can see that the world even without interacting wtih them is pretty steeped in that depressing solemn miserable feeling despite the bright adventure of a hero and the action. Actually imagine such a magical creature for no reason fucking with you, taking your pet and coming back because he decided he didnt like the pet, cursing you into some other race/form and then what? you get cleansed sure... but what if he can do that again? he really had such great displays of power that stuck with me. Vaati was pretty similar imo, actually getting to show off his prowess throughout the game made him more threatening a foe, OOT does have ganon overtake the town and his private floating castle over lava, he blasts you when youre a kid, but he never displayed something like petrifying the princess, winning a tournament, cursing the hero out of spite or to hinder him, etc. im hearing some lore now in BOTW adn the new lore Nintendo is shoving on everyone because too many idiots tried making sense out of an already nonsensical timeline that didnt exist... adn its now... that Ganon is the evil everywhere... all the time... in all the places... but even this kinda just... trivializes it for me. feels like a rip off of Satan but Satan would have such a grasp and minions to do such work in all the time, places, etc. As for Ganon, idk, i think i'd prefer it more Middle Earth's style like Melkour corrupting the elves, early man, making his own demons and dragons through his corrupting power and having suhc power because he was the strongest of the original high Angels before the beginning of this world... kinda scale... again like Satan but the power seems to work that way and there's credit for such amazing amounts of power... idk what Ganon did in BOTW that really warrants such power, and in other Zelda games hes the Tyrant of evil, King of Evil, etc, JUST BECAUSE HES THE BAD GUY, or touched the triforce of power... it feels... unearned, just granted because hes a favorite villain, versus earning that power or showing how powerful he was with it.

Maybe it's just me, but... I personally will always like the original N64 version over the 3DS largely because of the change made to the Song of Double Time. I do believe that Majora's Mask is one of the best video game experiences ever, especially for a kid. And as an experience above anything else, I will never forget how much more real the world felt when I had to wait in it. I'd just be waiting for an event to take place, alone with my thoughts. If I got bored, maybe I'd just walk around, look up at the moon, or risk leaving to try something else in the meantime. I especially love how the game plays ambient sounds at night instead of music. Waiting made everything feel more real. Waiting for the Anju sidequest events gave me a real sense of responsibility as a kid, that I was actually going out of my way a bit to do favors for characters I cared about, and I never knew what was gonna happen next so waiting gave me a lot of time to imagine the possibilities. I'll never forget waiting for the alien invasion in Romani Ranch. Because you had to wait until 2am in the game, THAT was the sole reason that quest scared me so much. The waiting gave me so much anxiety as a kid. As a result, it made me feel like I truly accomplished something when I finally mustered the courage to go back and beat it. Now I get it. It makes sense. The 3DS made a great change for convenience, I know a lotta people enjoy it, and also it makes little sense to force people to wait for in-game events when they're playing on the 3DS, which runs on batteries. Nowadays, I probably wouldn't mind replaying it on the 3DS simply because I don't have as much free time anymore as I did as a kid. But to me at least, letting you skip to any hour of the day makes the game less of a personalized experience and more of a checklist of errands. Waiting was one of the reasons Majora's Mask is one of my all time favorite video game experiences.

There are quite a few little changes to 3DS Majora's Mask that puts me off it. The biggest issue for me is the swimming in MM64 is so joyous, when I was a kid I used to go to the sea and swim around just for fun.. yet the 3DS version's swimming is incredibly obnoxious by comparison.

Another effed up detail about Majora's Mask is that the Romani Ranch's specialty drink is alcoholic. That is why child Link can't normally go in to the milk bar. So on the final day the younger Romani sister says her older sister is finally going to allow her to try it. So she is essentially getting the younger sister drunk so she won't feel any pain when they die. Even just writing that here makes me tear up a bit. This was truly one of the most engaging world settings of any Zelda games. This did what BotW failed to do. They both have incredibly simplistic main stories, but this one fleshed out the world's characters in a far better way than BotW did with any it's side characters especially the champions.

Personally, I felt the bosses on the 3DS version were worse than in the N64 version. Odolwa would always block arrows, knock you out of the air with his moths, and was just outright furious to fight on the N64 but the 3DS version nerfed him so hard that I could kill him before he could even land a single hit on me. Goht just became more tedious instead of just a fun little race and smash. Gyorg can go rot in a ditch considering all the BS that Nintendo added to his fight; The whole feeding mines to him on top of the heavy restricted Zora Swimming, just made that fight so much worse. I didn't mind the 1st half of Twinmold's fight; I found it to be a refreshing change overall but the 2nd half was just annoying with how crappy it was that I never wanted to return to that dungeon ever again if I could avoid it. I also never counted the Gibdo Well as a separate mini dungeon to Ikana Castle as you require the Mirror Shield from the Well to complete the Castle, making it feel like it's own complete dungeon experience, granted the whole acquiring items from outside the dungeon was a PITA. Finally, you didn't mention the nerf to water hopping as a Deku Scrub. That alone made the Swamp in its entirety much more difficult than it needed to be and was probably one of the worst changes made to the 3DS version, alongside Zora swimming.

I love this game even more than Ocarina. Those side quests on 3 days scenario, how npcs act over the days gives this game such a life to the world and how your actions impact over their life . The transformations are so cool, the side activities, all of these fall into place so perfectly. It is true that it could use more dungeons, more what it lack in quantity it has in quality.

You really get the point of Majora's Mask. The time constraints are meant to stress the player and convey a level of urgency. The characters are so unique and they all have such great stories. I really prefer the original N64 version. I like the models better and I do not like the changes to the bosses and the swimming. I fell like Aonuma pulled a George Lucas with the remaster. Some quality of life changes with the time skips and things would have been great. Tampering with core game staples is a bridge too far for me. If people prefer the remake that's cool. I'll just stick with the original.

Kinda reminds me of how people will complain that a dungeon was too hard or confusing just because it required some brain power when you were doing the exact opposite of that for most dungeons... like in OOT, eveyrone rags on the water temple's last bit, getting lost there and yet... when i did it myself as an adult i foudn out what the secret path was... by just using my map to check where i havent been... and i knew what the water level had to be at to get there... such a "puzzle" right? and yet it stomped everyone and became infamous... in much the same way Majoras Mask did the same thing with each hard adn difficult puzzle... my cousin found the gorons ice temple stupid and boring from watching me play it, haivng to push the column down as i progressed... while my brother who was impressed with how you could fire arrow the curtains in the Ikana boss fight and immediately told my cousin to shut up cause he didnt know anything about the game's complex puzzles. MM puzzles were meant to take up your time, they required some thinking often times, even figuring out what to do next, im still praising the water dungeon for having literally 1 key... the rest of the dungeon is figuring out how to get about with the water mechanics, ice mechanics, melting ice, flow valves, etc and the 4th temple requires you to turn the whole thing upside down and renavigate the old rooms with trying to remember how the ceilings were... much more stressful with the timer... but again, most people would opt for... jsut removing the timer system... or the difficulty of puzzles... etc. hell MM was by far the hardest Zelda ive played and it felt like enemies, even the ones on the field could be a challenge... mostly was the low free health since theres only 4 dungeons but damn, that felt good, vs just taking 1/2 a heart for FINALLY getting hit, halfway through the game as youre on some 12 hearts by now...

A lot of fair points. This sure is my favorite Zelda title mainly for the dark themes it has, especially when it comes to the cosmic and psychological horror aspects of Majora's mask itself. Sure would kind of love to see it return, maybe attach itself to Link for a change and see what kind of issues he could have being a chosen hero and what not and be a chaotic spirit that appears a lot more to taunt you, test you and challenge you.

15:50 I got a similar feeling in dark souls 1, at the end of a few ng+, after killing all the bosses, collecting all the items and doing all the side quests, followed by killing all the npcs (mercy killings, most of them), just standing at firelink shrine thinking on what do to, only to find that there's only one last thing to do; kill gwyn. The music haunts me as I remember all the npcs that used to inhabit the shrine, remembering what they and I've been through to get to where we are. and for what? for everyone to die? for the world to be reset? for all of this to happen again? Even after finding every ounce of lore among every item, and just barely being able to piece each detail together, there really was only one last thing to do.

When I played BotW I seriously had to question if Majora's Mask is still my favorite Zelda game. Ultimately, it still is my favorite. BotW is still an amazing game and experience, but it just can't dethrone Majora's Mask for me. My greatest wish would be for the BotW sequel to take place in a scaled up version of Termina with the same mechanics of BotW, but with the masks of Majora's Mask. imagine the traversal options you could have by turning into a Zora, Goron, or Rito in an open world like unto Breath of the Wild, you could have the entire Great Bay ocean be a region you could explore as the Zora. Rolling across the plains and mountains as a Goron would be a great change of pace from using a horse. And of course the Rito form could replace the paraglider altogether or at least be the most difficult mask to obtain. Heck, they could be based on the Champions, they are dead after all, like all the transformation masks in MM were based on dead people.

I found that many of the changes including those to deku link's jump, zora link's swimming, the no quick save save feature, the bosses, and to the ice arrows hurt the remake. Deku link cannot jump across the lilly pads as simply, in the remake you have to line yourself up and run across the full diameter of the lillipad to reach the next safely. The great bay area is quite bare and the entire area including the water dungeon are designed so that those who master the zora controls can move freely though. Considering how many video game nerdwriters care about how gameplay tells a story instead of cutscenes, akin to the film saying 'show don't tell' the quick saving adds to the atmosphere by increasing the negative consequences of dying, the relief of the save at the end of the song of time is an actual relief. And I would have been fine if there was a harder difficulty option with quick saving, but to my recollection there was none. The old bosses had more interesting ways to defeat them. Specifically how you beat goht and molduga. With the ice arrows the original just gave an interesting line in the item description which would lead one to find out that you could freeze water. The remake both starts off showing where you must shoot but during the gorge fight it does not show you that you can freeze the water even though you can.

Anju and Kafei is the greatest side quest in any Zelda game in my opinion. Now that I think about it, it's my favorite side quest in gaming history. I remember playing this when it first came out and I was 12 or 13 trying to figure out the mystery of this couple. I felt so confused on what to do and very connected to the characters The satisfaction of figuring it out myself was such a great accomplishment as a kid. The bunny hood makes life so much better. Once I got this mask I wore it every chance I got. The Fierce Deity mask felt like the greatest accomplishment of all. I kinda wish you could wear it everywhere, but maybe that would have caused too many issues for the rest of the game. It would have been cool to talk to others in town with that mask on though. For story this game is by far my favorite Zelda game. This game has a strong nostalgia effect on me because it was my first Zelda game and I feel like it's tied with Breath of the Wild. It's hard to say one over the other because they are so different and depending on my mood I'm going to enjoy parts of one other over the other at times. I still haven't played the 3DS remake yet.

Mine too. Though I'll always prefer the 2D ones since those were the ones I grew up with, MM is definitely my favorite 3D Zelda and has the best dungeons of any 3D Zelda (I thoroughly enjoy all 4 of them). I'd put Wind Waker 2nd and Twilight Princess 3rd (that game gets spectacular after getting the Master Sword, especially the dungeons). OoT was fun the 1st time around when I finally played it for the 1st time in 2009-2010 but has gotten boring for me pretty much on the 2nd playthrough. I used to hate MM on the other hand (mostly due to emulator crashes I used to experience) & grew to love it. The last two 3D Zeldas (SS & BotW) have been completely garbage in my opinion. I really hated SS other than the character of Demise who I found interesting (though battling his Imprisoned form like 4 times was boring & stupid). It had horrible dungeons, the motion controls being forced on the player sucked, they worked very crappy, I hated most of the characters, the lack of an on screen mini map sucked, the text was hard to read with the little to no contrast from the text boxes, the bird riding was shitty compared to riding Epona in TP, I hated the stamina meter, I hated the collecting of all those materials & stuff (butterflies, feathers, all those monster parts, etc) for potions to fix broken shields, hated the breaking of shields (which ruined combat), hated the swimming, and many other things (especially the water dragon). I thought SS would be the worst Zelda but then I played BotW which made many of these things I hated about SS worse (brought back the stamina meter, exacerbated the breaking shields issue by making everything break, exacerbated the material collectathon much more, cut down on the dungeons (only 4 for such a huge world), in the most lazy manner replaced what should have been another 10 more dungeons (given the size of the world) with stupid shrines which were monotonous & boring and all rather similar, had stupid rain make the cliffs slippery & prevent you from climbing them (the 1 thing in the game I actually enjoyed), killed any reason to explore the world as all you'd find are items that break & stupid koroks (another lazy design filler) and soulless characters that just didn't stand out, the horse controls were horseshit, the rain & stamina meter limited the openness of the game that its sycophantic fanboys/girls otherwise ignore, the camera was atrocious (at least 80% of the enemy deaths I took were from things I couldn't even see), etc. I admit BotW is a decent game but an atrocious Zelda game. I'm certain Nintendo just doesn't know or care how to make a Zelda game anymore. The only recent ones I enjoyed were ALBW & Tri Force heroes. I bet every game going forward will be like BotW and our beloved 30+ year Zelda formula is pretty much dead. I would've loved a game that uses the TP engine and adds nonlinearity and a smaller but fuller world & goes back to nice dungeon design without all the stupid & weird & stupid tribes & names that BotW threw in.
