Retired Canadian Trucker here, same scam was ONCE laid upon me, and I refused to pay the buggers, telling em, "Its your product, you ordered it, just sign this "Refused Delivery" area on the Delivery invoice, and I'll sell the WHOLE LOAD to another company for CASH.(Its Legal when a customer refuses to accept the load) Been there, done that. After that, I made it CLEAR that I dont pay for my truck to be loaded or unloaded to anyone that I worked for. BTW, they dropped all the 'Arrival Fee's(just this once they told me).. I never went back, and warned everyone about the rip off.

I have hauled a lot of groceries in my 20 years of trucking. There are ways to get around these fees. I delivered to a warehouse in central New Jersey one time. Big sign said "this is a driver unload warehouse." So, I went to my door, put up the dock plate, and got a power jack, and I waited. And I waited. And I waited some more. In the meantime, I was getting near the end of my legal hours. There was no place on the dock for anybody's product. Other drivers told me that sometimes they didn't clear the dock until as late as midnight. It was already 6PM, and I had just enough time left to unload and get back to my terminal. So, I called dispatch and told them the problem. I also told them that I would not run over hours to return home that evening, should it take until midnight to get unloaded. Dispatch told me to leave, and come back to the terminal. They can call for re-delivery if they want their freight. So, I went to the receiving office. I told them I needed my paperwork. They asked me why. I told them I was leaving, and that I would have to come back when they were actually ready to receive. I was told I had to see the dock foreman. He would meet me at my door. So, I went to my door. A guy comes up on an electric scooter, and asks what the problem is. I pointed to the dock and I told him there was no place to unload and that I was running out of hours, and I had to leave. He asked me if I would give him 20 minutes. I reluctantly agreed. You never saw a dock get cleared as fast as that one was! 3 guys showed up with power jacks, double length, and my trailer was empty in 12 minutes flat. The trick? If your bill of lading says "prepaid," it means that the product has already been bought and paid for and belongs to the warehouse. Push their buttons, and they will unload it - and at no cost to the driver. All you have to do is get ready to leave and announce your intentions.

Got out in 2007. It hasn't changed and never will. One reason is the drivers don't have any unity, won't sacrifice for the greater good of the whole and the shippers, broker's and receivers know this and have been laughing at truckers idle threats ever since deregulation kicked in in 1980. I miss driving, traveling yet, so grateful I'm not experiencing the distinction that's hasn't changed since I started in 1984 and still happening.

I have seen a company in Wisconsin charge $100.00 to unload a flatbed load of onions because it was a safety issue. These issues need to be handled before the load gets loaded. Most of the time, the shipper sells the load on consignment, and still owns the product until sold. So the shipper should cover the cost of the unloading.

Trucking deals with many scams. Most dry van loads of grocery products have to deal with lumper fees. I agree with everything you are saying. It's very time consuming dealing with getting the com check numbers or whatever numbers to pay the com check. The thing about taking it back it's a long way back to California. You've got more problems than paying a lumper fee if you don't have $50 in your pocket and your out on the road. And you'll take a produce load on a flatbed anytime you can get it if you get stuck in South Florida or California and there's no other freight. Especially if you have truck payments to make. You might want to learn about the industry before you complain about the fees. I agree that it is a big inconvenience to a driver, but there are write offs for the companies as business expenses passing the paperwork down the line until it goes back to the beginning. Just remember, if you're going to be picky about the freight you haul, you'll be out of business faster than it took you to get started. Trucks don't get paid for if they're sitting empty.
