hipstxrkat Well the pure vs corrupt and good vs evil was actually introduced with the meter in Fable 2. Fable 1 just had a more simple system for it. But I get what you’re saying. But in the fable series, “hero” just refers to someone who is of a number of bloodlines with special abilities. These include strength, skill, and will. Some heroes have all three (the protagonists)or some have just one (Hammer, Garth, and Reaver)

Fable does something your not seeming to consider. They don't use the word "Hero" the same way. Hero does not equal good guy, going evil does not get you thrown out of the guild. the guild master himself says as much. Heroes in Fable are the ones trained to take on insurmountable tasks, making their definition much closer to the original demi-god version of the word than the modern good guy. Hercules was a jerk, and an idiot, but also a hero. As were any children of both gods and mortals. Jack is Hero of heroes because he is proven to be the strongest. not because he is the nicest

Y'know what really killed the Fable series, besides the lackluster final missions against Lucien and The Crawler? The fact that the series kept moving FORWARD in time. Look, I love my Master Flintlock Pistol as much as the next guy, but Fable is, always was, and always should've been first and foremost a FANTASY. Think about this for a second, if you pay attention to the Will throughout the series, it's clear that the further forward you go in the timeline, the weaker the will becomes, alluding to England's own stamping out of the possibility of faeries and such in IRL history. Since it's fantasy, and that's what we want, what the series should've done is go BACK in time. Instead of wanking over the details of the previous games and how great Fable 1 was, the rest of the series should've gone back in time to create certain parts of 1, when the magic was more powerful, the beasts were more terrible, and the world was more primal. Seriously, I wanna fight a Balvorn. They were known for devouring hundreds of people at a time, and that sounds brutal and amazing to me.

Bj Hunnicutt Lol. Not saying much but back in the day, Fable 2’s Baroque style setting was actually praised by many. Due to the fact that it was a unique setting with guns and highwaymen than other rpg games. Fable 1 didnt really had much of an interesting setting since its the same old medieval type world thats been played out in far superior rpg games like Elder Scrolls. Also, a fantasy setting can have guns and still be in fantasy genre. Hell, DC comics Sandman, one of the greatest fantasy stories of all time, takes place in the modern world.
@niamhmorrissey21876 жыл бұрын
@@godzilladude1231 It was still a bad direction for the series to be going in. Most of the fantasy elements from Fable 1 were abandoned/toned down to make way for a more industrial/victorian style. That's not what Fable is, Fable is medieval fantasy, not Industrial fantasy. Alot of the more interesting/fun stuff outside Fable 1 was in the *past* instead of the future. I'd rather see Jack of Blades when he was a hero over seeing how the Hero of Albion's great-great-Grandson is doing. I'd rather see Scythe when he was still properly alive over seeing 2 Kings having an argument. I'd rather see the magic when it was at its strongest over it being pushed aside in favour of guns. Etc.
@godzilladude12316 жыл бұрын
Justa Person I think your talking about Fable 3. It was Fable 3 that kind of removed virtually almost all of the cool weapons AND takes place in Victorian Industrial style. Fable 2 takes place in the Age of Enlightenment and NOT in Industrial Age Victorian England. The story of Favle 1 was basically generic. Hack of Blades was awesome but the rest was meh. Fable 2’s setting was basically unheard of at that time hence why it was able to garner awards that Fable 1 didnt. Fable 2 didnt really remove much from Fable 1. Heck there are alot of things that Fable 2 added that Fable 1 didnt have like being able to choose to be a girl, family set up, multiplayer etc. The only thing it toned down was removal of armor but they reinstitate it with DLCs. Magic was not toned down but the new mechcanicw of the game with the permission to switch between mores of attacks with ease made the game easier. Sply put it was Fable 3 who took out most of it. They removed over three quarters of the weapons and the ability to mix magic made the game even easier. It also had a very useless set of melee attacks that dodnt make any sense so half of your weapons are useless.
@jackhickman12175 жыл бұрын
@@godzilladude1231 FFS the age of enlightenment is very similar to the industrial revolution. The late parts of it are practically the same as the early parts of the industrial revolution. The watering down of the fantasy sucked and I'd expect my many people that played the first fable FIRST to think that. Fable 2 might of had improvements but it wasn't a massive improvement it's world was a down grade in quality though it had more quantity. Many people think that Fable 2 was the better game but then again Fable didn't sell half the copies that Fable 2 did. So most people played 2 or maybe 3 first and never touched the first game. Saying that Fable 2 was a more interesting setting are you fucking high? Lost Chapters shits on Fable 2 setting,characters and story.

@etonix918 жыл бұрын
My only gripe with your theory is the definition of the word "hero" in Fable. It doesnt necessarily mean "good". This originates from William Black's Children who, despite many of them being petulant monsters, called themselves "heroes". Because of that, "Hero" is more related to our understanding of the word "fighter" than our understanding of the word "Hero". Being called the Hero of Heroes is just an acknowledgement of his reputation as a whole, not so much his actual good deeds. Of which he has done few.
@KingJGrim8 жыл бұрын
That's true. But considering that they have drinks and children toys named after him, it can easily be seen that the people of Albion hold him in a warmer regard than the guild, no?
@etonix918 жыл бұрын
King J. Grim The drink doesn't really carry much weight. Drinks are often named after pop culture references or literary figures. So that's not really a big piece of evidence. As for the toys, there Are toys of Scythe too, if my memory serves. Scythe, not being the mythical figure that Jack is, wouldn't be a popular child's toy. this tells me that the toys are meant more to be an Easter egg for players than a toy that children in game actually play with. Dont get me wrong, I agree with your conclusion: that the public reveers Jack (because Albion views it's heroes like we do Prowrestlers for some reason), I just disagree with your evidence.

Hell, I'm just glad you can take criticism and not be butt hurt over it. Though, at the end of the day, I still don't think the people of Albion adore Jack. They just respect/fear him like they do all other heroes. They just respect/fear him the MOST, because of his long history and the power that he wields. Honestly, my reference to wrestlers and their cultural impact strongly mirrors that of the Heroes of Albion. It's hardly a perfect comparison, though, given that wrestling is ultimately fake and Heroes can do so much more than what we pretend wrestlers can do.

Something to support your "Jack does whatever he feels like" theory is Jack of Blades kidnapped William Black and took him to the void, then he tried to enslave William with his sword of Aeons, however Will escaped with the sword. To me, that makes no sense. So i'd like to just believe that Jack kidnapped Will, took him to the void for tea and crumpets, then Jack gave his sword to Will (Although he made it look like an accident) then Will used that sword to defeat the Court.

The term Hero in Fable is best defined by the definition of heroism that has to do with feats of strength as opposed to nobility. To be heroic, or to be a hero, is to possess and utilize great power, but in a way that proves yourself. I believe this is why renown is such an important mechanic in Fable, because it's basically your measure of heroism. Jack of Blades would be considered a hero, because Fable uses an operational definitiom of hero to mean: one who is heroic - which means: capable of great feats of strength/skill/will. He would be considered the "hero of heroes" euphemistically to suggest that his feats of strength are unmatched - even if he's done terrible things. Reaver fits the same profile. He's notorious for abominable things, but he possesses great power.

What you didnt mention is that the Heros Guild is quite litterally the government of Albion. Towns are free to run thier own affairs, however the guild itself IS the military. Albion, was a military state. The way in which taxes were collected was through payment of quests. Quests being tasks for the hero's (a sort of militarized federal government) to complete, these could be helpful or harmful depending on the guilds era.

Great Vid. Jack was my favorite villain in any game I’ve ever played. Though I wouldn’t agree he was a hero by conventional definition, he wasn’t really a villain either. He was pure evil In a time when perceptions of an objective morality are becoming antiquated, villains like Lucian and Logan are just downers. I hate having to take down the otherwise good guy who’s forced into making hard decisions because life is complicated and blah blah blah. I can’t stand this trend in game narrative where we have to humanize the villain and make them a sympathetic character. If you don’t have a good or evil antagonist you can’t really have a good or evil protagonist it just makes the whole thing moot. Jack was a perfect villain. By the end of the story you either thought “I have to kill this asshole to save the world.” or “I have to kill this asshole so I can be worse.” “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical they can’t be bought bullied, reasoned, or negotiate with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.” -The Dark Knight Jack was the original Joker.

In Fable 2, Theresa manipulates literally everyone, Lucian, Hannah, Hero+Rose, etc. She manipulates everyone for the power of the Spire, now why would she need the Spire's power? Either to resurrect the court or to return her full power. Think about it, Theresa survived after 500 years whereas her brother who was MUCH more powerful didn't? Not only that, she can now see through all worlds and why would Theresa need the Spire? Because she DOES manipulate Lucian into building it, but Hero's sister isn't the manipulative type... But the Court certainly are.

If at E3 this year the stafe cut to black and i just heard "Jack of Blades... is... back" i would lose my shit! in that same voice and then Fable IV comes on the screen

Not gonna lie, I loved your interpretation of Jack of Blades and I think it's adds extra depth to an otherwise somewhat generic prophecy villain. And then I read the comment section, and that ruined it for me. I don't think these guys realize that using lore to discredit any depth and intrigue added to a character actually hurts the content that they're trying to promote.

surely the court must have more then 3 members i mean the ace of blades is not mentioned at all which i think strange considering a knight queen and jack of blades.

I think everyone with abilities in Albion is just called a hero. It doesn't matter if you are evil or not.

Jack of blades got it all power, respect, immortality , and to become a freaking Dragon. Damn I think he deserves to be the greatest Hero in all of Albion even if he just a hero to himself.

Jack was a hero until getting sick of the guild and turning into a Powerful demon that feasts on souls. Apparently in the new fable game coming out Jack of blades is in it and you can either fight him, play as him, or play on Jack's side

That's great man, I'm hoping it's for Dis2. I saw your review for it and noticed you were fair about it despite loving the first one you still pointed out it's flaws(a good thing). I pretty much felt the same after doing both character runs but what disappointed me the most was them giving Corvo a voice, it really changed the character I played from the first one but it was still an amazing game that didn't end up being caught in the 1st's shadow.

Except the whole point of the fable series is that you can be both a good or an evil hero because the term hero isnt strictly attached to saving people but to fame and power.

Jack is kinda like the default player... Usually I play RPGs as a good character, but often I save, then go on mayhem destroying all, and then reload the save.
