It's funny because having played the games and looked at this video, I argue that the previous games had a far better story than 2018 as these games succeed both of being a fun as hell action packed experience while also adding nuance and subtleties that make the stories far more interesting to replay through besides the gameplay. Whereas 2018 is largely paced to slow and doesn't have as an exciting journey to engage you also it completely relies on boring info dumps that completely remove any subtleties and largely go over your head as MOST isn't relevant to the actual story. Mimir is the most memorable character for the fact that he regurgitates Norse mythology in a comedic way, as that is more interesting than the actual story.

43:52 - I only heard about this in a comment in another video but I _heard_ that *supposedly* Kratos' mother only got as far as the "Z" in Zeus before the curse took hold to prevent her from speaking. The shock on Kratos' face could be interpreted as him considering the possibility that his father was Zeus, but never was able to confirm it later. Hence still being surprised by the revelation in God of War 2. 1:00:13 - I noticed that too. But I th- 1:05:12 Well... yeah. Exactly that... Also, I think it also is reflected with Gaia constantly popping up to remind Kratos that he needs to use the power of the Sisters of Fate to kill Zeus. Gameplay-wise, it's so that the audience doesn't forget about Gaia and gives them a refresher on their overarching goal if they step away from the game for an extended period. But one could also view it as Gaia attempting to keep Kratos focused on a singular goal so completely that he doesn't have time to stop and contemplate what else he could do with the Sisters' power. 1:04:43 - That fight was so goddamn good that the Zeus fight after felt anticlimactic by comparison. From breaking up the fight with an entirely new environment and scenario, to using their own Time magic and mirrors against them, to the sweet acrobatic movement of both Kratos and the bosses, the tag-team fight that never felt like you were being blindsided because you were forced to divide your focus, to the absolutely instrument-wreakingly epic music, to the tactics changing all the way to the very end with Lahkesis sending out massive columns of energy in a spread pattern just to *_try_* to keep Kratos at bay?!? Aaaaaauuuuuuuuugh!!! *SO* epic! The irony about people talking about the new games being more complex and "grown up now" is that, even without Kratos clearly being completely devastated by the revelation that the nightmares of his past would never leave him and lead him to resort to *suicide* to escape the despair of what he had done... The world of the game _itself_ communicated the nature of Kratos and the Gods right from the beginning: A sailor would rather die than be saved by Kratos, Poseidon wants his seas to be rid of the Hydra yet will not combat it himself nor save man invoking his name. The Gods make Kratos behead Medusa (another victim of the gods in mythology) so that they can turn her into a weapon. Citizens know Kratos and fear him so much as being *near* them, the Gods demaning human sacrifice just to *navigate* the Temple of Pandora, and cursing the first to fail in the temple to serve them even after his death, the souls of the dead become like playthings, used and gifted to Kratos as a weapon.... ...But most telling of all is the story of Pathos Verdes III, the architect of Pandora's temple who was approached by the Gods _directly._ As you read the notes he leaves that mark the progress of the temple's construction, this servant of the Gods becomes more and more disillusioned with them. His sons lose their lives in the construction of the temple and yet he keeps going on and on, turning from a loyal servant to seeing them as cruel and unfeeling. Culminating in the revelation that after losing all but one of his family, when she tried to get him to stop and abandon this fool's errand for the Gods that even the body burner believes had long since abandoned him he kills her in a blinding rage, not unlike Kratos. Even a servant who was always loyal to the Gods would find they didn't care in the slightest for him and would ultimately be left with nothing. His life ended by his own hand, the same route Kratos would try to take. Great video as always. If you're worried about video length driving people away, you could always try breaking them up into parts. Though long videos certainly aren't going to stop me from watching.

The original series is definitively a perfect example of the mentality of "Gameplay > Story" focus. But still have both of them being superb. Just started the vid and as a big GOW fan I thought I'd share my two cents. One thing I love about Greek era Kratos is that he is this invincible unstoppable beast, and yet he always loses in some way. Sure, he kills his enemy, but he's always the one left suffering because of it. In Ascension, he frees himself from the Furies illusions, but as a result he's left with the traumatic nightmares that would haunt him the rest of his life. In Chains of Olympus he manages to save the world and his daughter, but at the cost of having to abandon her forever. In the first game he finally gets his revenge on Ares, but he isn't relieved of his nightmares and isn't even allowed to take his own life to make the nightmares stop. In Ghost of Sparta he finds and frees his long lost brother Deimos, only for Deimos to die mere minutes later. And throughout 2 and 3 he finally gets vengeance on Zeus, but at the cost of destroying everything, even including the last person Kratos cared for as a reminder of his daughter.

Damn, what a comment... In the future, I'll make videos as long as they need to be. While this video hasn't "popped off" in views, the feedback, and the video itself, has been great! So thanks again!

Absolutely loved this video man. A perfect highlight of how God of War was always a mature franchise and how God of War 4 owes so much of its success to the original Greek era. the video was fantastically edited, the humour and storytelling was on point in every way, and the length felt fully warranted with all the detail you included. Loved it, can't wait for the next one

I missed these videos man happy to see this before I get ragnarok. Is it harder to split the videos into parts if you feel like the video is to long or do you not like making videos into parts?
@KingJGrim2 жыл бұрын
You mean "parts" within a single video? Never really made a video on such a big character (having six games, and comics, etc.), so was a bit unsure on how to go about it. Overall, I do prefer having ONE video with all the info one can gather, as long as the story is consistent... Was that the answer you were looking for?
@faizmahe74122 жыл бұрын
Thank you for replying I meant the parts as different videos like covers the first video should cover god of war 1 and gost of spada then part 2 covers 2 and 3. But if you prefer it like this that is cool I just thought that might make it easier if videos for long characters are in more than one video

This was one hell of a retrospective. If you can keep up the quality I have no issues with long form content. That said you do sound exhausted. So go at your own pace. It's worked out well for you so far.

Thank you for the wonderful work. As for me, the original is still self-sufficient, as in many other series of games, despite the rather strong sequels. And of course it's worth noting that the GAMEPLAY scene with the protection of the family in a nightmare controlled by Ares beats all attempts to play on the pity in Dad of Son.
@KingJGrim2 жыл бұрын
I think the medium of video games have the ability to truly invest those who care. Having that gameplay-segment, of protecting your family from yourself, be the hardest part of the game, is just something truly extraordinary.

My personal explanation to the retcon that was ignored. Instead of whispering Zeus, what was whispered could have been that his father was a god, but not whom. At least, that's my view on it.^^
@ToonGrin2 жыл бұрын
Length wise good. The hosting wonderful. you have a good personality for it. The editing is incredibly hilarious, some of these jokes are so spot on. My only criticism towards the video is the overlook at the release order of the games which affected the egregious plot holes and retcons of the content which, for me hampered the stories weight. I'm glad you covered the father angle as it is a great example and pairing it with Cory shows little regard for the art of storytelling which feeds the idea of why some would otherwise look at God of War as just "edgelord fantasy" because the writer sort of gives credence to the idea of how some story tellers are with their universes. They care little about narrative consequences and want to change the narrative to there whim rather than the hand they are dealt with and it causes a sacrifice for narrative cohesion just to tick emotional boxes and cool moments. An example is the retcon from God of War (2005) is that the Pantheon is corrupt by the evils after Kratos Open Pandora's box despite God of War: Ascension (2013) taking place before those events meaning Zeus was already paranoid at the prophecy of his off spring coming to kill him. Which is stranger still that the games hade Marianne Krawczyk yet there is not really to well cohesion placed amongst the titles. God of War is an interesting product to analyze and hopefully if this video performs well you can begin the journey into the Norse era and if if so perhaps point out the omissions and inconsistencies because its important for budding writers to see errors and learn how to avoid them or even see obstacles but overcome them with clever writing because it can allow for remarkable twists and turns. Thank you for the content you've provided you are a wonderful host and content creator and looking through your library will be a learning experience.

Hey hey! Glad you enjoyed this "little" project. As for the inconsistencies, plot-holes, retcons, etc... My 'In The Mind of' series isn't really there to critically analyse the writing, but more to look into a character from a bit of a different perspective. There are people out there making content just picking written work apart, but I look at the strongpoints, and try to weave it all into a fun, story-video. Sometimes I do like to joke around, if there are anything worth making fun off, in this case Cory Barlog's nonchalance towards the narrative, but overall, I want my videos to be primarily just elevating characters. Hopefully, it is worth the hard work!
