True story #2: me and a friend caught the A train at ENY station at 3 or 4 in the morning. Heading to the Rockaways to go fishing. A Spanish gang was on the train with us, included a female and two white guys. They were mostly carrying on about something. Train pulls into Van Siclen, the gang gets off the train. The two white guys look like they are getting off, but as the doors closed, they grabbed the female's purse and stepped back in the car. The gang and especially the female started pounding on the doors as the train pulled out. To this day, I have no idea what I witnessed. Summer of 1972.

75 Precinct was large and ran mostly north-south. I don't consider this area truly East New York. ENY is just slightly to the west, has its own subway station i.e. Broadway Junction-ENY and included Brownsville just south. Some gangs operated locally in their own hoods and other gangs were notorious and wider-spread. These CH guys were notorious.

Btw Coney Island was also a gang hotspot, and also a no mansland, meaning you would not want to get caught dead there. I actually had my first crush on a girl from Coneyisland,Glady' s. She was 13 ,I was 16, but she told me she was 14. She was way ahead of me in life experience. Poor girl grew up on the streets,I first met her when she was 8 . But That era is a time not really understood, good thing they have small documentaries like this.

@kingKlast I recall the elementary school I walked by had most of the windows smashed. The school was open and had classes, though in a damaged and deplorable condition. It was just a small walk from the pleasant ConeyIsland arcades and rides, yet a division from heaven to hell

True story #1: we graduated high school June 1976. In July a class member was fatally stabbed on the sidewalk outside the YMCA on Jamaica Ave across the street from Highland Park. Two other kids stabbed by the same dude. I don't think the stabber was a gang-banger at the time, he was 26 or so. Violent times.
