This was around 1986-87. The song was composed (loosely, its a jam) in 78. Eddie was incredible. Every guitarist in the 80s was doing his best to play like him, and failing. Just like Jimmy Page and Jimmi Hendrix, he influenced a whole generation of players.

@@kenkonwick6660 Yep. And, it evolved. I am old as dirt and lived in Hollywood during the 70s. He has been doing, albeit extremely rough, versions since back then. His solos were always designed to showcase techniques he either invented or made mainstream - two-hand tapping, alternate picking at warp speed, dive bombs from hell, "let's see what happens if I screw with the tremolo springs with an abnormal amount of echo and phase 90.", volume swells, harmonic slapping, 3Fs (Four Fingers on the Fingerboard), artificial harmonics, "I've done so much cocaine I don't know when to quit"

This was never written down. The original eruption around 11:24 (intro to You Really Got Me) was a warm up Eddie used before practices and an exec/producer heard it and said they should add it somehow to the album they were working on (1978 Van Halen). The solos in concert were never the same and just Eddie doing Eddie things. Pretty sure this was 1986.

I was 10 years old when VH One came out in 1978. I had older brothers that were musicians and I was a blooming one. I used to sneak into my older brothers room and listen to the albums I heard them play. My Bro got this new album and I put it on the record player and the second track was Eruption and it blew my mind! Eddie inspired me in my early guitar playing years. One of my favorite solos by him was on Michael Jacksons Beat It from the Thriller album. By 1982 I was playing in a band and emulating his style. He's gone but never forgotten. I also like that you watch the whole video then give your reactions.

Back in my day when you followed your fav artist you had to literally follow them, this was before computers internet or cable music channels, thats how we got deemed "groupies" (word that refers to a fan of a particular musical group who follows the band around while they are on tour or who attends as many of their public appearances as possible) , just a little fun fact. Hey King N Kamy! Eddie Van Halen was a classical pianist when he was a kid and his brother Alex played drums in the band. They came over to the US with their father who also played a musical instrument, I think the clarinet which is featured on Van Halen's song Big Bad Bill of their album, Diver Down. He also designed his own guitars, amps and pedals. Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page are great guitarists but Eddie Van Halen is unique, in more than one way, that he made his own guitar gear.

Just like Michael Jackson didn't invent the Moonwalk, he perfected it. Just amazing the different sounds Eddie he was able to get from a guitar. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen.

What Edward did was open the door for hundreds of thousands of guitarist to hit the rock scene in which many were able to score record labels. Not to mention the influence he had on nearly every guitarist in all kinds of music. The county music singers in 80’s90’s and even today were influenced by his music. And what I mean was he opened the door? Rock was on the back burner in the late 70’s. There was pink, disco and the traditional rock bands like Zepplin Aerosmith,Black Sabbath… but what Eddie did bust that door down and Rock nRoll was at the top by the early 80’s. Slash of Guns N Roses said that Eddie busting on the scene made it possible for him and the band to be one what they were. He was a musical phenomenon, Beethoven of our time. He sadly missed but he gave us a lot of material for us to listen to just like this live solo for us to enjoy for generations to come. Thank you Edward Ludwig VanHalen. RIP
