I saw them at a bar in Va. Beach , Va . In 1977 right before they made it big . That night there was a bad thunderstorm and it knocked the power out . But that didn’t hinder the band , they played some acoustical stuff and did some funny comedy stuff, they were very cool and when the power came back on 2 hours later they not only did their show but played an extra couple of hours . Till this day , one of the best shows I’ve ever seen . RIP Eddie ✌️

@@sicfrynut as with Hendrix before him, Eddie Van Halen completely changed the way electric guitar is played. To this day the playing innovations and methods that Van Halen created are used by nearly every serious lead guitarist that followed him. Is he my personal favorite guitar player? No. That would be David Gilmour, but Eddie Van Halen advanced guitar playing more than any other player, and I would have to say he's the greatest of all time. Most solos are boring after a short while. But this solo is different. They are a little mini of solo songs all put together. It is a work of art. THE guitar solo of guitar solos. Eddie was and will remain one of THE most influential guitarists of all time. Well done, young lady, for going with it. He is so unique and can be quite overwhelming to fresh ears.

it was the original solo that led to all the soloing during the hair band days in the 80's as those guitarists : Lynch, Tipton, Angus, Slash, Murray, etc. etc. tried to outdo what Eddie started. EVH set the bar and that led to some outstanding guitar solos in the 80's.)

@@sicfrynut hope you don't mean Angus as in ACDC's Angus Young, they had already put out 3 or 4 albums by the time VH released their first. That and I don't remember him playing anything that could be marked as an attempt to out do Eddie as their playing styles are completely different, they were actually quite good friends who wouldn't do anything like you mentioned to take the spotlight from one another. And it's funny you put ACDC under the category of 80s hair bands. If you're referring to a different Angus I retract everything I mentioned.

@@joshthomas2536 i was trying to remember top guitarists who were playing in the 80's and also forgetting Glen Tipton also played in the 70's and prior to EVH i believe. I should probably avoid using MM and trying to thought process at the same time. what i was trying to get at was how Eddie set the bar with his speed and playing that the 80's hair bands (ratt, dokken, cinderella, tesla etc.) guitarists would try to attain during their own soloing careers. warren demartini and jake e lee were good friends as kids and always talked about how they would try to outdo one another and how evh influenced their playing styles. Dimebag was also a good friend and created his own unique sound due to EVH''s influence, which is why Eddie had Zakk Wylde put his "bumblee bee" guitar from VHII in Dime's casket with him. basically, Eruption was a very special guitar solo that helped inspire guitarists since then. even Steve Harris incorporated 1/32nd and 1/64th notes in his bass playing.

He is more jazz oriented than Eddie but he uses a tapping technique where he plays full chords and incorporates a melody within, all by tapping. 316 at the start, a bit of Eruption buried in, Cathedral where you mentioned , Mean Street shortly after Cathedral, more Eruption, (heard some rumours that he was playing Michael Jackson's Beat It towards the end but yet to pick up on it myself), then the final taps hinting of a slight demo of Spanish Fly. Cathedral was twisting the volume nob from memory to take the sharp tone out and give the smooth violin/chello vibe. Could be wrong but let's face it, we're all here for Eddie❤️🤍🖤

I applaud you Mo for listening to the whole solo. Remember that this was the mid to late 80s where guitar solos were at their peak within concerts. Eddie was at a while other level with his style. He could play at lightning speed. Think of him as the equivalent as a concert maestro. He could play multiple instruments but what he did with a guitar was something beyond special. Even hammering on those scales like he did with such speed was a sight to behold. You mentioned how he had his eyes closed. He didn't need to see what he was doing, he merely felt his music. I would say the man was a prodigy, he is sorely missed and may he rest in Power.

@@mikegoldstein1246 Problem is VH music wasn't half as good as the music of the pioneers you mention. Eddie had a revolutionary technique but he purveyed simple music. He wasn't as complex or fast as Allan Holdsworth and his mastery of scales, nor did he have the vast sweep of Hendrix' or Pagey's music. But he did exploit the tapping bit - took that trick to a new level. We used to see VH all the time at the Starwood - Crescent Heights/Santa Monica back when he was woodshedding this stuff - they were okay. Then 1st LP comes out w/Eruption and that cemented his legacy - despite the rip off of Jim Dandy that clownshoes Dave was doing for years. Today there are great players taking it further - Guthrie Govan, Tosin Abasi and so forth - but Eddie was good in his time just as Eric, Jimi, Jimmy, Ritchie, Alvin etc in the 60s and 70s were and SRV in the 80s. Everybody rides on the shoulders of who came before them - Ed would say Eric was his biggest muse - he learned the epic Crossroads solo as a youngster just as I learned Alvin's Going Home after I saw him do it at Woodstock. 🎸

@@cuda426hemi I will say that their music was much more party and appealing as good tune so that's a preference thing and sure anyone can say they prefer Claptons Cream and Hendrix music as better overall music. But I'm sorry I have seen almost everything live Hendrix ever played and he isn't even in the same playing field as EVH. Edward was so much more advanced snd so much more precise than Hendrix along with being a much faster and technically superior player. EVH also played with feel and swing and most importantly had the most devastating rythm playing you will ever hear. Sorry but have to disagree about "just exploiting the tapping". Ed was so much more than tapping that it's a shame to only see that in his playing. Players that are incredible in their own right and know alot about playing say Edward is the best they ever saw Lukather,Schoen,, Nugent, May, and many others who were around with those older players all said Edward was the best they ever saw

@@mikegoldstein1246 You don't understand - no Clapton or Hendrix NO Eddie - that's how TIME works; they said everything you are saying about Eric, Jimi, Jimmy and so forth FIRST - there is only one FIRST- as I said Ed stood on the SHOULDERS of the GREATS he copied and learned from. He wasn't the FIRST at anything except exploiting tapping which had already been around for years. All VH's chord progressions are predictable and nothing special. Now if they ALL came at the same TIME you might have a case but just as Tosin Abasi is so much more advanced than Eddie today - you see how it goes? And as I said a good player with mediocre music - is that as important to the world in general as the music that is the fabric of rock? VHs best songs and what broke them was COVER tunes - You Really Got Me, Pretty Woman, Where Have All The Good Times Gone etc. Ain't nobody going to walk down the street humming Eruption. The music is why I don't regard VH as anything special - Eddie was special but not so much VH. As you say they were a club/party band at best. As far as guitar players per sé Jimi was 10x more revolutionary for guitar players than Ed - just a fact, a historical fact - you want proof? Buy ANY book on Rock guitar players or look at ANY Poll and you won't find Eddie in the top three of BEST EVER. Sorry. Jimi's single performance at Monterey is the single most revolutionary show on guitar in history - just the look on Mama Cass' face and the audience says it all. 🎸

@@cuda426hemi your nuts man..seriously. some of the things you say about Ed's playing are just opposite of what most people say about it. Eddie was named #1 by guitar world ...yes #1 greatest guitar player of all time. Eruption was named on many occasions as the greatest guitar solo of all time. And my point is lined up all together not who came first. Edward can play every note those guys played with ease and eyes closed. Don't believe me? Check out his out of thr blue playing of Crossroads where he nails that solo with so much ease in thr middle of a fuckin interview albeit, just shows you how easily he can nail those guys music. You give Mean Street. Spanish Fly ( on acoustic) Eruption, Little guitars I'm the One, and not one of those players I mentioned could even touch it. Not one. Logic is without one there is no other but Edward wasn't inspired or influenced by Hendrix at all. All those guys regurgitate same blues licks in different ways...Ed created so much more. RIP the Great Eddie Van Halen, virtuoso of rock guitar. Not only was he that, he was also a guitar builder especially early on when he had little money to buy guitars. Through building guitars, he learned about the use of electronic harmonics. He saw Jimmy Page at a concert early on occasionally doing it -- called "tapping" -- though he never called it that but he did take it much further than Page, as seen here. Ed was a personable guy and a friend to all. In the years before he died his appearance became entirely different, still very fit but sort of grey haired, late-middle age. Many would not recognize him on the street. But in spite of cancer, he was a rock-star survivor and lived his life to the full.

If you rewatch, that is not a belt around his waist...it is part of a "platform" by which he can level the 🎸 to reach behind and effectively open the back to change the pickups to become the "organ" and "violin". Edward Van Halen was the G.O.A.T. and to actually think he said if he could do it all over again, he would never have taken his first drink, smoked his first cigarette and would have played piano rather than guitar. Rest in Peace, Edward.

There are two guitarists that can be considered the greatest Rock and Roll guitarists ever. That's Eddie Van Halen and the great Jimi Hendrix. They both defined how future guitarists played guitar in this genre. From the first time I heard Eddie Van Halen play, I knew they would be huge.

The DRUMMER, THO! That's Ed's big bro Alex and beloved partner in crime since birth. They played music TOGETHER, like conjoined twins, for over half a century!!! Ed's passing must have been awful for his highly protective older brother. Check out any of Al's solos (Pleasuredome/drum solo should cover that for you.) The brothers were opposite sides of the same DNA strand of music, and could play so closely together it is like hearing one person play both guitar and drums. Alex could slay the audience with a drum solo just as well as Eddie could, no joke. Both were classically trained pianists, but both played multiple instruments with ridiculous ease! Van Halen is worth a deep dive. Enjoy!

Here's the thing about this guy: he pushed the 6-string electric guitar as far as it could possibly go. The instrument was never the same after he got done with it, so much so that they've had to create a whole different style of hard rock guitar to keep the innovation going. Rest in peace, Eddie Van Halen.

David Lee Roth, who was the first lead singer of the group Van Halen, once noted in an interview with Joe Rogen, that someone to be as proficient as Eddie (or in any field or profession) would need to play/practice/study for 30,000 hours.

Eddie is the GOAT. I see you accepted the suggestion to react to van halen for some righteous guitar playing , enjoy , kid 🙂 check out jump , hot for teacher, Panama, when its love, by van halen as well. Huge catalog of work, albums from 79 all the way to 2010 or so. So many gems in each album , with both Roth and Hagar as lead singers. Shout out to Gary Cherone as well.

His awesome fingertapping he first did in 74'. This guy was f'ing awesome at approximately 19. No one TODAY comes remotely close to the talent of the KIDS in the 70's and 80's - especially Eddie. To all the know it alls, yes he DID begin tapping at about 19. He said it himself in an interview.

Ohhhh NO !!!! You're about to listen to the King , Mr. Eddie Van Halen.. He changed the way and is why 90% of guitar players back then and today have some of the Van Halen style in there own playing. If it wasn't for guitarist like , Hendrix , Clapton Muddy Waters , B.B. King and this man : The 6 String Master - Eddie Van Halen,, we wouldn't have as many great guitarist as we do today. He changed the guitar game forever.. Although they're many great guitarist today, none of them would be if it wasn't for Mr. Van Halen.. And there's never going to be another EVH, ever.. May he Rest in Peace, and have his place on the concert stage of HEAVEN..🙏. I hope you truly enjoyed watching and listening to the Master of the 6 String. And might I add with all respect intended:: You are sincerely, a very beautiful Queen.🥀
