Mihawk is stronger than Shanks for many reasons: 1. If he isn't then what is the point of his character? Why would Oda give him the title if it isn't true? If Shanks was stronger he would give it to Shanks and Zoro fight Shanks for the title. He made a seperate character to be the strongest swordsman. I never understood why people think Mihawk can't be stronger then Shanks. Mihawk>Shanks doesn't ruin the narrative, create a plothole. Meanwhile Shanks>Mihawk causes a huge problem in Zoro's story. 2. His title not being true would betray 25+ years of buildup for Zoro's character. Zoro would defeat Mihawk but still not be stronger than Shanks or other swordsman people put over Mihawk. So Zoro would fail to accomplish his goal and fullfill his promise to Kuina and his Captain before he becomes PK. 3. Mihawk is the only person in history, since the legendary Ryuma to forge a Black blade. Not Roger, not WB, not Shanks etc... He reached the ultimate peak of swordsmanship. 4. Mihawk was once again confirmed superior to Shanks in chapter 1058 where it was stated that Mihawk's swordsmanship skill is superior to Shanks. Shanks is a swordsman, so for him swordsmanship skill = overall strength. Shanks's insane Haki is a part of his swordsmanship skill just like how Mihawk's Haki is, because that's the only thing they have. No DFs or technology. In the recent Zoro info for the Zoro novel it was said that Zoro's tremendous Haki attack Dragon Damnation was the peak of his swordsmanship skill. So a monster Haki is a part of swordsmanship. 5. We haven't seen Mihawk fight once post-timeskip and Oda is saving to show off his power even after Shanks. 6. For any bounty scalers, Mihawk isn't even the official Yonko of Crossguild yet his bounty is 3.5 Billion. If he was the official Yonko instead of Buggy his bounty would be in the 4 Billion range easy. He also straight up turned down the title. Mihawk also literally pulled up on Shanks and his ENTIRE CREW in the East Blue and called Shanks a one-armed has been. So this notion that Mihawk is afraid of Shanks is nonsense. Also for the people who genuenely think Vista is equal to Mihawk then I guess that means Vista>Shanks. Mihawk was holding back and was there to be there to keep his Warlord status. Just like how Fujitora was holding back against Sabo in Dressrossa. And Jozu the guy with one of the best defensive fruits in the series blocked a no name regular slash from Mihawk. That is completely normal. We have seen Commanders block Admiral or Yonko attacks over and over and over. And this Mihawk attack wasn't even named. Damn I yapped.

The one thing that is probably the biggest proof of Mihawks strength is his bounty, because while bounty-scaling is a rather poor way to power-scale, Mihawk is an exception. When Luffy becomes the Pirate King Law doesn’t suddenly get to claim he’s a pirate outside of this title because he doesn’t care about the One Piece. And Mihawk's line about becoming pirate king should be fairly obvious: becoming the WSS just requires getting stronger than the current one, whereas becoming PK requires much more than strength - it means dealing with other pirates, the yonko, the admirals, the WG (like don chinjao said), finding someone capable of reading ancient transcripts on rocks scattered across the globe, finding four particular special rocks that are red, then getting to the island at the apex of the coordinates indicated on those special red rocks and still fending off the aforementioned parties throughout the whole ordeal. Strength is just a piece of the puzzle, which is why it's harder than surpassing Mihawk.

We keep bringing up Vista like Mihawk is only commander level at best, but yall keep forgetting that Mihawk is the time waster professional of One Piece. The time waster king is Dragon, obviously. But fr hear me out. Mihawk literally took a whole vacation trip to East Blue, to chill and to waste time and hunt down Don Creig of all people. Are we gonna say Don Creig is Shanks level? He then waste time fighting pre-time skip Zoro, with a butter knife. Again are we gonna say pre-time Zoro is Shanks level? He waste time drinking with Shanks to boot. He waste time fighting Vista during the war, he even waste time clashing with monkeys on his island. Like clearly this man is bored and would rather fight Vista for like 10min than to fight in a war he doesn't care about. To me personally, Mihawk sounds like the Shunsui of One Piece. Someone who's bored, somewhat and doesn't really care to fight seriously all the time. But when they ball out and actually fight for real, they show why they're in the top 10 of the verse. So just like we had to wait to TYBW to see Shunsui be a boss, I figure the same applies to Mihawk.

I don't side with the next generation is stronger than the previous after we got a load of old Garp and the might of a sample of Joy Boy time capsuled Haki. Mihawk can be seen as stronger relating to Shanks in relation to swordsmanship that is his focus so much that Mihawk put his all into his blade made it black. While Shanks prioritized the full range he can amp his blade but his stocked up on future sight and other things. I am not touching either being ahead of Roger or Dragon, that is two more characters with different focuses.

Over the years, most of what I've seen is insecurity and projection from the shanks glazers. Mihawk fans are so few and far between they're practically a non factor. I can't quite speak as confidently when it comes to Zoro fans, though it wouldn't surprise me if there was still some over-exaggeration/demonization against them as well.

Harder because unlike just defeating a single person he has to defeat all the yonko, find ancient text that can only be read by a handful of people, and sail the seas overcoming multiple challenges. That’s a a harder task then just getting by strong enough and defeating one person.

I like to think that Mihawk is a more "Skilled" swordsmen then Shanks, but shanks is over all stronger. Thus the statement that Mihawk is the worlds greatest swordsmen remains true and also explains while shanks might be stronger, he isn't as proficient in swordsmanship with his left arm and Mihawk could see that, thus loosing interestm because it was never about power or strength but proficency. At least that's my take
