I totally understand what you mean about Remy not being "commercial." I'm an adult black female and was a preteen when Nicki hit the scene in '07 - '09. I was literally obsessed with Nicki Minaj, the Barbie image, and the creative/playful/animated delivery of her lyrics. I also got all my other little friends liking her. We all memorized her lyrics, and adored her music. None of her music was about "tough" stuff, and if it was, she delivered it in a way that sounded playful, girly, and appealing to your average pre-teen. Looking back, at that age, I do not think I would have been drawn to Remy Ma had she put out music during that time. Remy Ma just seems like she has a tough exterior, not very playful, etc.. which is totally fine. But for my demographic at the time, we would not have had anything to feel drawn to. With that being said, it kind of goes to show that Nicki Minaj just happens to appeal to several demographics. She appeals to young children/pre-teens, teens, young adults, and importantly white people. White people have huge buying power here in the USA. And if an artist does not appeal to them, unfortunately it'll effect the amount of records they sell. It's unfortunate that we feel like a female rapper has to be of a lighter complexion, girly, bubbly, etc. in order to appeal to a wider market and thus sell more records when you have male rappers that don't have to purposely appeal to white people to sell a lot (Migos, Future, etc.). We say that dark skinned women who rap with a "tough" flow, rap about struggles in their life, don't have a gimmicky image, etc. can't make it.. but all it takes is one person to do that very thing that we don't think is possible! So who knows, maybe Remy Ma will be the one to do that and pave the way for other female rappers like her. Non gimmicky, tough flow, dark-skinned, etc. That's just my two cents. :/

The Goodman Diaries Like I said, I was only a pre-teen during '07-'09. Meaning I was an infant around the time Lil' Kim began making music. The main records I recall her doing as a kid that was actually made during my time was "Put Your Lighters Up" and Keyshia Cole's "Let it Go." Of course, I had heard a few older ones - but again, she wasn't making anything current. And as an adult now, comparing Kim's "Barbie" to Nicki's "Barbie," I STILL would've found Nicki's more appealing, period. Nicki took Barbie to a whole different level. She did the voices, she did the image, she looked like one, etc. All I'm saying is she may have took it or been inspired by it, but she took it, and AMPLIFIED it.. What Nicki Minaj was able to do when I was a preteen with her mass movement of followers was amazing. Never had I ever been so drawn to a female rap artist until Nicki hit the scene. I remember Lil mama had a few songs when I was a preteen, but again - I didn't feel apart of any movement. I feel like Nicki gave her listeners an experience, a sense of belonging.. her "Barbie" club, where all things are girly, sound animated and fun, etc. To a child, teen, or whatever that's appealing - period.

+Love Destiny Lets not. Sure Beyonce hasn't been showcasing her full potential vocally since 4 but Beyonce is a top tier technical Vocalist. People overlook her vocals because she's an incredible entertainer overall (I mean she has the lungs of a beast, it isn't easy to sing Get me bodied, Deja Vu, Upgrade U hit those notes and plus do hard coreography) and claim that her tone is bland (as if that makes her somewhat less of an incredible singer). Keke Wyatt is an incredible singer too don't get me wrong (both are coloratura mezzo sopranos with an extensive range) but I doubt she'd be able to intimidate Beyonce vocally.

Actually, Remy has a hardcore fan base that's been checking for her since before she was incarcerated. And not to take anything from Nicki, but we have to give credit where it's due: Remy has been out of jail for less than two years and has two Grammy noms off of a collab two months before their album even dropped.......that says a lot about her and her talent.
