We are fortunate that the Bell Foundry allowed a film crew into their workshop to record their work process for our education and enjoyment. The processes that they use today are a combination of old and modern practices and in years to come people will watch this video to find out how we made some things in the early 21st Century and consider all of these processes to be old school! I worked as a Patternmaker for 10 years in the 70s and early 80s. It was the most satisfying work I have done in my lifetime. I sure enjoyed watching this video and the Craftsman involved. CNC machines replaced us in our country but it sure is nice to see the trade still in progress in other places and countries.

Can you imagine all of the lost skills we'd have to rediscover if the world went to hell? This is fascinating! My grandfather (b. 1898) was a pattern maker for Dunlop tire and where in this video the detail was put on sheets of plastic, he'd have to make tire moulds out of wood. Yet another (almost) lost skill.

The "full service foundry". They make everything, transport everything, install everything, and get the final "monk approval certification". And there didn't seem to be one step that was easy. WOW! I wonder how long all that took. These workers show dedication far beyond anything we see anymore. WELL DONE... and incredibly beautiful.

Lol what modern equipment and technology do you mean 🤔 even throughout the video I didn't find any modern tools that were significantly helpful and everything as usual just used human hands power, everything is done traditionally like in ancient traditional times. The difference today is that it is only done by a few people so the process takes a very long time, unlike in the past which used hundreds of human workers so the process was faster.

Обработка отливки удаление литниковой системы и облоя. Весь процесс очень трудоёмкий но очень напоминает игру в "куличики" правда формочки огромные. Да и труд тяжёлый и опасный.

These are craftsmen who have mastered a process that has taken decades if not centuries to develop and master. A careless or accidental move at any stage could be disastrous and force a re-initiation of the process. Every step taken is mindful. I watched slack-jawed through the entire process. Yet it appears to the casual observer. To be so easy; that is an example of great mastery.

The hardest part is taking into account that as the bronze cools, it contracts. To avoid the bell cracking as it cools, the casting sand has to move with it, while retaining enough support for the bronze not to slump. The thickness of the sand has to allow this to happen proportionately to the varying diameter. The interior support is the most critical. Originally, the bonding agent for the sand was was made by boiling fish bones for hours to form a glue, then diluting the residue correctly for the sand to move without cracking. You can see this briefly, starting at 12:30 I was wondering whether the original bonding agent is still used today, or whether modern resins are now used. The colour of the liquid looked like the old school solution to me. It has taken a full paragraph to explain one small point. A full narration would have more than doubled the length of the video and probably completely baffled most viewers.

Magnificent work of the artisans. I remember that in the small town of Castilla, there are foundries. They make bells for Christian temples. But the technique is the same as for Buddhist temple bells. Magnifico el trabajo de los artesanos. Recuerdo que en el pequeño pueblo de Castilla, existen fundidores. Ellos hacen campanas para templos cristianos. Pero la técnica es igual que para las campanas de templos budistas.

Beautiful craftmanship like this is more than a process, this is art in its purest form... not many can do such amazing workmanship on a scale as large, then let the sound speak for itself... i tip my hat to your team and wish i had a chance to see with my own eyes your work.
