Lust, tempestuous relationships and madness feature in the colourful reigns of the Georgians. George I brought two mistresses over from Germany, George II quarrelled openly with his son Frederick, and George III became ruler of the British Empire - but madness eventually disabled him. His son reigned as Prince Regent for eight years, and later as King George IV.

Alan Ereira cracks me up. My favorite moment in this episode is at the end, when he says that Victoria would make a demure and pretty little queen who could leave running the country to the professionals. Then his expression falls and he says, "Couldn't she?" He clearly likes the subject matter but he doesn't feel the need to be super-reverent about it like some historians do.

I like the series. A thousand years of people trying to figure out how to organize and govern themselves. The compact presentation makes comprehendible the constant ebb and flow of the shifting balance between the power of masses against the power of concentrated wealth. It is really a study of how nation states came into existence. I may watch it again.

I think it's natural that the masses never hold power in government. Anyone who would tell you otherwise is selling you a bridge. In America for example there are over 300 million people. Imagine direct democracy on that scale!? It would be complete chaos and nothing would ever get done. That's ignoring the fact that many people have no desire or ability to be involved in decision making. I think the term oligarchy gets overused and has a (sometimes) undue negative connotation. I would say it is the most natural form of government. Even under an "absolute" monarch it always emerges in the form of nobles and ministers. It is even more obvious in a republic, when business interests and representational privileges collide. I think in the end we have to do the best with what we have. The 250 year rule seems to be the most accurate representation of an enlightened government, completely independent of structure whether "democratic" or absolutist.

Since this series aired they have done a test on the bones allegedly belonging to Phillip who's corpse was supposedly hidden under Leineschloss castle. They turned out to be a mixture of animal bones and human remains from 5 different people. Also, according to Wiki Sophia didn't die of shock from Anne's letter. She died a few days later in her garden when she was trying to run for cover in a downpour and simply dropped dead from old age.

I'm American, but it'd be a wee bit of an insult to say that Richard III was merely mad. The "Princes in the Tower" were either murdered at his command, or in sympathy to his cause. That intramural betrayal was so great it contributed to Henry Tudor's successful capture of the throne via an almost comically tenuous Lancaster claim.

"Powerless" he said. What nonsense. The fact remained that had George I learned adequate English he could have still presided over Cabinet meetings, appointed or dismissed Ministers of the Crown, declared war, commanded HIS Army in the field or HIS Fleet at sea, concluded an honourable peace, and elevated anyone he desired to the Peerage. I don't know about you, but THAT still smacks of POWER to me.

youarecrazy7777 To be fair, that would be largely because most Europeans who learn English nowadays do so as schoolchildren. Because of the way the brain rewires itself at puberty, it becomes exponentially more difficult for most people to learn a new language as adults. George I therefore probably spoke heavily accented English, which he only would have begun to learn after coming to the British throne in his 50s. However, George II learned English as a young child and was probably fluent, and any suggestion that George III spoke English with anything but an upper-class London accent is just silly. I can't speak to the quality of the German language they use here, mind you...

The title King or Queen of Engalnd was abolished in 1707 during the reign of Queen Anne. In 1707 the Parliaments of both Scotland and England passed their respective Acts of Union. The result was that on the 1st of May 1707 Scotland and England yielded their sovereignty to the newly created nation of the Kingdom of Great Britain and the UK parliament was formed. So the Georgians (King George I-IV) never held the title King of England they were the respective Kings of Great Britain (until 1801 when Ireland was incorporated into the union and the nation became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland)

The throne of England had never belonged to French Plantagenets and Welsh Tudors...that’s just hilarious. The Angevins were anglicised from the beginning, Henry II was dual ancestry, his mother even hired the English Scholar William of Malmesbury to write the famous Gesta Regum Anglorum so he could study his English ancestry in depth. Richard I held the crown legally but was nothing to do with England, as England during his reign was a republic in all but name, run by ministers and clergymen (which is why they fought hard for the Magna Carta). King John was total opposite to his brother and was raised in England and lived in England his whole life....he drank English wine from Corfe, wore Opus Anglicana clothes, he spoke at least broken English, worshiped in English churches and his favourite Saint was the Anglo-Saxon St.Wulfstann and he’s even buried next to him at Worcester...how the fuck are these French...Henry III felt so English he even named his sons after famous English saints
@europeanbourgeois8223
@europeanbourgeois8223 6 жыл бұрын
As for the Tudors, they were just the same....Owain Tidr was Welsh....just like Geoffrey Plantagenet was French...but their descendants were English through and through (England is politically a strong country and changes the whole nature of people, it’s makes sons foreigners to their fathers). Owain’s son to Cathrine of Valois was called Edmund (famous English saint name), was born in England and was lord over Pembrokeshire, it’s a part of Wales known as little England and the people that live there to this very day still acknowledge the English element in them. Henry VII and Henry VIII are as English as is gets...it’s this over simplification amongst the other messed up claims that render this series a joke to anybody that’s ever read even a single scholarly paper of the English monarchy.

Henry II was French on both his father's side and his mother's side. His native tongue was French and he did not speak any English. It was centuries before any King of England spoke English.

The Act of Establishment of 1701 removed all Catholic posterity from the Stuarts, preferring the Protestant lineage of Sophie, the last daughter of Elizabeth Stuart and the Elector Palatine Frederick V of Bavaria, to begin with his son George I. Or, during the succession of August 1, 1714, at least 54 princes (his) were better placed in the British succession than that Sophie of Bavaria and his son George I from Hanover. Parliament broke the succession of divine rights of kings This act of another age is still in force, it is a shame for a country like England

Indeed. It should also be noted that one in three native american tribes thought waging war on their neighbors to increase their ownership of slave workers and slave wives, was the greatest possible use of their time. There was nothing particularly noble about the myth of the noble savage as the remaining fraction of tribes merely preferred total slaughter. Wholesale murder of men women and children after a war victory isn't exactly what anyone could call the ethical, or moral highground.

Thank you! Im so tired of the bullshit image of the peace loving, own-business-minding Native American. Its just not true. Many tribes were greedy, murderous and barbaric with little respect for human life. They were slave owners long before any white man set foot here. And nobody EVER talks about it, NOT EVER. After all, ppl cant possibly process in their narrow little minds a ppl being villainous when theyre taught from day one that they are history's poorest victims.

I believe saying that the Americans declared independence because they were jonessing for for some British, Spanish and Indian land would be a statement a little closer to the truth (although admittedly still quite a bit of a biased and misleading statement as it doesn't consider many other motives). As for the Dutch, the British had already taken their NA territories in the century before the American War for Independence.

He is making the very silly, but common, mistake of saying just 'England' here, when it shold be 'Britain' or 'the UK', from programme 5, as everything is after 1707 and the formation of the UK. He makes a brief mention that its actually Britain now, then goes right back to saying England again almost every time. A rude and historically inaccurate habit.

The Georgians were not "Kings of England". No such position existed at the time. They were Kings of Great Britain and, after 1801, the United Kingdom. How can one trust the historical accuracy of this video that can't even get these basics right?

they considered it deplorable. american troops intentionally targeted officers. most european countries considered that a war crime at the time because they thought their nobles should be exempt from death in warfare. but we turned it to our greatest advantage. how the american militia fought was considered for their time in how we considere how al-queda fights today.

Unfortunately for other countries the British castle was cutthroat at ruling the land and under cover of Royalty crashed every other country’s castles so they would be sole sovereignty in the world of ruling monarchies. It’s cruel and twisted all right and the whole world pays for them still being around.
