I think King George the sixth was the best thing that could ever have happened to England and the world. If his brother would have been king, we all could have been under the Nazi rule. Edward the eighth was an admirer of Hitler and would surely have turned England over to him. I think that would have put Hitler in power and enable him to take over the world.

Me too! I started stuttering at 5 and kept on going despite numerous speech therapies. When I saw the trailer to "King's Speech" (as a 50-something) I sobbed uncontrollably. Before that movie, I didn't know he stuttered. I still have difficult days, but thanks to that movie, I've relegated the stutter to the very back of the backest burner.

My cruel mother beat my baby brother's hand each time he picked his pencil in his left hand to write. He stutters permanently. I have been listening for days the Royal Histories and was it King George VI, who was born left handed & forced to be right handed?

@Kiddio
@Kiddio Жыл бұрын
@@drgunnwilliams8239 Regardless of power, the influence and public appearance of the country was largely related to the monarchy. I know you are referencing the English Civil War and constitutional monarchy that prevailed but my response would be why do you think a significant number of public works, were named after monarchs after it and to this day (the Elizabeth Line in London). Streets, roads, statues, buildings etc weren’t simply named after a monarch for no reason, there was significant public and cultural relation to the monarchy. We know, now more than ever, that the effects of cultural power are as significant as political power when it comes to public opinion.
@drgunnwilliams8239
@drgunnwilliams8239 Жыл бұрын
@@Kiddio I demeaned none of of his public works. However your comment about him being a powerful king, stand incorrect, Last reduction of Kings power in 1932, not back to period you indicated, gave no possibility of power. Reduced to a figure head and acting & speaking under Parliament's direction, figurehead is all he and monarchy has been since. British parliament has censored Monarchy figures many times since then. Commonwealth nations currently and post WWII have been abandoning the House of Hanover (AKA Wimdsor) since. Latest in process Jamacia. Former colonies want no part of cost of Royal visit & monarchy means little to most, outside of London in particular & england as a whole. I have not heard of a single person, I know or in casual conversation that has mentioned/watched the coronation. A King of Greek & German decent. King Chucky? Edward as a King especially in wartime would have been disastrous. Him and Wallis were Nazi sympathisers that was partly why the government gave him a post the other side of the world during the war. After his brother John died he seemed unsympathetic to what happened and in a letter to a friend he compared John to an animal. He even upset his mother by downplaying the tragedy to her.

I'm sure your sentiments are much appreciated by many. To reciprocate, In this Canadian's mind, there is no doubt that George VI and Churchill had the greatest respect for the USA and their efforts to aid the free world at large during WW1 and WW2. Men like Churchill and FDR had the foresight to see that if the US refused to fight the nazis in Europe, then the US would have had no choice but to fight a much greater nazi juggernaut on their own eastern seaboards and pacific coast lines for starters. This chaos would have made Pearl Harbour look a canine tussle at a dog park (an ominous but fair comparison not meant to disrespect that tragedy). The free world will always owe an unpayable debt of gratitude to the USA. I just hope the US will right its own political ship and destroy its new enemy of democracy, MAGAt republicans!

He spoke fluid French and English and every place he visited massive crowds greeted him. FDR asked the King to visit the US and he did. King George VI was a hero to the Canadian forces and all of the Commonwealth forces who fought in WW II. His call to arms in September 1939 was heard and acted upon by every country in the British Empire. During his trip to Canada he pulled off a cute turn of events very few Canadians know.

Unlike his selfish, elder brother, traitor King Edward VIII, George VI, will always be remembered as a brave, courageous King, who overcame personal adversity to lead his country during WWII, in so doing shortened his own life. The narrator erroneously referred to the King of England who doesn’t exist, George VI and his heirs are Kings/Queens of the United Kingdom. George VI’s grandson is now Charles III.

George V is the original Windsor, the one who rebranded, modernized and saved the monarchy, setting the model and the path for George VI and Queen Elizabeth II, while leading his country to victory after ww1. Sad that George V gets no credit at all, because people like you know only about George VI and the Queen

King George VI was by any judgment a great king. He was personally courageous and overcame many personal problems. He was during the war along with his consort Queen Elizabeth an enormous central source of strength and unity. He made some very arduous and dangerous journeys by air in order to visit his armies in North Africa and the beleaguered island of Malta. After his funeral at Westminster Abbey in 1952 and his interment at Windsor, the floral tributes were laid out on the grass including that of the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill. His written note simply said the words contained on the medal of the Victoria Cross, ' For Valour'. There is nothing more to be said. Except, May You Rest In Peace for Eternity Georgius Sextus Rex Imperator.

Another excellent documentary, well researched and presented. I personally think George VI would have much preferred never to have been crowned, but seeing that the interests of Britain required it, he gave it his all. He not only worked hard to sublimate his own leanings to those of his people, he instilled in his Daughter and Heir that same sense of commitment and loyalty he himself had displayed. Had his Brother not abdicated in George’s favour, it is very likely he would have made peace with Germany. He was moved so far out of the arenas of the war precisely so he could not enter the politics of it. He did ask numerous times for a role that would place him in a position to, (either through carelessness or desire) be closer to the action. His visit to Hitler’s Germany put his own country on guard, feeling he could not be trusted. George was the King that was needed, both during the war, and after, as the British Empire underwent dramatic changes without resorting to yet more battles and deaths. He genuinely cared for his people, as a good Monarch should.🖤🇨🇦

I think the very character of the man that King George VI was more than speaks for itself. A most remarkable man with a great deal of not only inner strength but also loyalty, morality, determination and self sacrifice for not only his country but his personal relationships as well for the greater good of the collective whole. Although not necessarily per se a "wanted" position, when it came down to the reality of what he knew was to come, he did not shirk the responsibility of what he knew he needed to do. He stepped into it and gave it his all. I've watched many documentaries and I truly do believe he was a good man with a good heart. He wasn't "flawless", none of us are, but he was absolutely most remarkable indeed.

Yes he was a reluctant King however God Bless him he stepped up to the plate and put aside or at least subdued his own desires and played the part of King nicely (appropriately) dutifully. . During WW2 he and the Queen Mother were a pair of human symbols whom the British people could rally around in their time of trial. Both George and Elizabeth toured the East End tirelessly when people were bombed out of their homes. One East Ender shouted out "Thank God for a Good King". The King immediately retorted " Thank God for a Good people". That sort of dialogue was invaluable to the country at that time.

Thank you for informing me about that beautiful quote that I had never heard before! In your first sentence you said “God Bless him”; I think He did when he gave that East Ender such a heartening reply. In “The King’s Speech”, when Logue and the King are “sparring” in Westminster Abbey, and Logue asks what right King George has to order him off St. Edward’s Chair he replies, “By Divine Right!” I think the quote “Thank God for a Good People”. demonstrates Divine Right beautifully. If we get nothing else from God’s teaching, it’s that we think of others before ourselves. George VI seemed to always do that. Though at 77 I’ll never live to see it, I hope the present Prince George will follow that example when he becomes King George VII.

I think one of the reasons why George VI was such a good king was because he had been through such varied hardships. Neglectful parents, medical issues, a veteran of a historically bloody war at such a young age, and of course, his speech impediment; these all crafted a seemingly unassuming individual into a very admirable man, made more so because Bertie had learned something almost unheard of in royals throughout history: Humility. Bertie resonated with the "common man" because he was not born exceptional. His glory had to be earned.

Edward VIII abdicated which was a good thing because he was temperamentally unfit to be a good king; he would have appeased Hitler and probably given up England without a fight. George VI was the needed man to be king during WW2. Not only was HE a good king, the Queen Mother became greatly admired and loved all over the world. Her constant smile in the face of the worse sort of adversity, touring the bombed out East End (after the bombing of Buck House she said now she could look the East End in the face), their decision to remain in London during the Blitz -- well, they were simply courageous. And she would dress up for those tours because she said that East Enders would put on their best to go and visit her, so she felt it only fair to do the same. We don't see such courage exhibited much nowadays particularly in the US where we had a recent president who tried to overthrow an election and become dictator for life. And we are still dealing with all the legal ramifications of his lying, stealing, raping, and all the decisions he made where he ONLY looked out for #1 -- himself. He is a sociopath with no feelings for others, no consideration, no loyalty -- he is constitutionally UNABLE to put others first as George VI and the Queen Mother did.

King George Vi probably saved the British monarchy. Whether that was a positive thing is debatable, but at the time Britian needed stability after his brother abdicated and going toward another world war. He and his wife Elizabeth were able to connect with the public in a way that was previously not possible. And all the while their daughter was learning from the responsibility and dedication to know how to have a mostly sucessful 70 year reign. The Commonwealth may be falling apart in the modern world, but a ceremonial monarchy may last in the UK for many more years. But none will top Elizabeth II.
