Walking from Kings Cross train station to Darlinghurst Road, El-Alamein Memorial Fountain (Fitzroy Gardens / Kings Cross Fountain), Macleay Street (walked on both sides) & Darlinghurst Road (walking to The Iconic Kings Cross Coca-Cola Sign)
Kings Cross is an inner-city locality of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 2 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney.
Colloquially known as The Cross, the area was once known for its music halls and grand theatres. It was rapidly transformed after World War II by the influx of troops returning and visiting from the nearby Garden Island naval base. It became known as Sydney's night entertainment and red-light district; however, many nightclubs, bars and adult entertainment venues closed due to the Sydney lockout laws. Today, it is a mixed locality offering services such as a railway station, gyms, supermarkets and bakeries as well as entertainment venues including bars, restaurants, nightclubs, brothels and strip clubs.
Kings Cross is not an officially designated suburb of Sydney, but rather a locality encompassed entirely by the suburbs of Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay. Kings Cross is a commercial area that is dominated by bars, restaurants, nightclubs, strip clubs and adult bookstores.
Kings Cross railway station is situated beneath Darlinghurst Road and the Garden Island facility of the Royal Australian Navy sits on the north end of Potts Point.
Potts Point is a small and densely populated area in inner-city Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Potts Point is located 2 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.
Potts Point sits on a ridge immediately east of Woolloomooloo, west of Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay and north of Darlinghurst. The suburb has a roughly trapezoidal shape, and at its greatest extent is no more than one kilometre long by 200 metres wide.
Kings Cross railway station is an underground station at Potts Point, on the Eastern Suburbs railway line of the Sydney Trains network. The area is well served by buses, with routes 200, 311, 324, and 325, and night-time routes 300 and N91, passing through Potts Point.
The El Alamein Memorial Fountain is a heritage-listed fountain and war memorial located at Macleay Street in the inner Sydney locale of Kings Cross in the City of Sydney local government area of New South Wales, Australia. It was designed by the Australian architects Robert Woodward and Phill Taranto as employed by architectural firm Woodward and Woodward. The fountain was built from 1959 to 1961. It is also known as El Alamein Fountain, Fitzroy Gardens Group, Kings Cross Fountain and King's Cross Fountain. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 14 January 2011. The El Alamein Fountain was commissioned as a memorial to soldiers who died in 1942 during World War II in two battles at El Alamein, Egypt.
The Coca-Cola Billboard in Kings Cross, Sydney, usually referred to by Sydneysiders simply as "The Coca-Cola Sign" or "The Coke Sign", is an advertising billboard erected in 1974 by the Coca-Cola Company. It is more often regarded as an iconic landmark than as an advertisement. Commercially, it is considered to be the premier billboard in Sydney and is the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Coca-Cola sign is located above the intersection of William Street and Darlinghurst Road and is attached to the Zenith Residences, formerly the Millenium Hotel and Kingsgate Hotel. The sign is often referred to as The Gateway to the Cross, because it is prominently visible from all of William Street, which is the principal road leading to Kings Cross from the Sydney CBD. One also must pass directly in front of the sign when entering Kings Cross from either William Street or Darlinghurst Road, the two main access roads. The billboard is made up of two parts: on the right, the famous red and white neon sign, and on the left the more modern, flex-faced sign. In total the sign is 41 metres in length and 13 metres in height, with the right sign being slightly larger at 21 metres in length.
The red and white neon sign is made up of eighty-eight vertical bars of red tubing. It also has 800 fluorescent lamps that are concealed behind reflectors that allow the billboard to project thirteen different patterns.

Ah yes, the El Alemain fountain! Brings back wonderful memories of my visit(s) in 1968 while on RNR from Vietnam. I stayed in KC, and loved every minute of it. Wonderful, friendly people. I swear I was treated much better in Sydney than I ever was back in the States. Thank you Australians for making life long happy memories during dark times for me.

I spent a few weeks in Sydney back in november 1992. Loved it. I could tell at 27 min that the road would go up on the left and that you would arrive to a huge avenue on your right. At 26 min 35, what is the name of that street? This is where most where I stayed because most of the backpackers hostels were in that street back then.

It used to be and had waaay more character, all gone I'm afraid. Looks like cement blocks. Luckily I grew up in the seventies when there where fabulous clubs and cafés..I moved to Europe when I was young and travelled back and forth for quite awhile. For me the magic is gone such a shame...but growing up there it was all about the dance,theatre and music...Oxford St was parrrty with great gay bars and fantastic shows at Kinsellas where I worked....Great times!

I love how dense and old school Sydney’s inner city is, Melbourne city is similar but Sydney’s on another level with cities like London, etc. I was 18 when I first went to Kings cross and it’s was a Saturday night, wow, I’ll never forget that night. Sad that Kings cross is dead now with the lock out laws, Sydney city really needs to re think it’s lock out laws cos it’s making the city deserted.
@jochenstossberg5427
@jochenstossberg5427 3 жыл бұрын
The lock out law have prevented unprecedented violence and street crime in this area. The Cross was seriously dangerous before they were put in place. I don't want to go back to a time when innocent kids from the suburbs looking for a night out were being murdered by thugs in the main street. Do you? This is what was happening. Time for Sydney to grow up I think. You should be able to have a great night out without risking your life.

I lived in King's Cross for 6 months back in 1986 when I was 23. I remember coming out of that subway out into a very different world (just arriving from New Zealand where everything closed on Sundays). I had just graduated from uni and I first lived in a back packers and eventually rented a flat in a building (probably at least 100 years old) right opposite Hyde Park. Kings Cross looks really beautiful now. It was lined with prostitutes and strip clubs and I knew I was part of the community when I no longer got hustled as I walked those streets. I remember going to the "Bottoms Up Bar" by the fountain with other travellers and then understanding the obvious play on words as it dawned on me that it was not a straight bar! I became friends with travellers from all over the world, I learned how to instal suspend ceilings (actually put one in the building behind the Coke sign), and really loved being there enjoying my freedom and youth. I bought a 1970 Holden HG panel van which broke down once on the Harbour Bridge. I replaced the engine in a vacant lot and I drove that thing to Melbourne, then all the way up to Cape Tribulation and then to Darwin before leaving for Bali. Loved the Australian people and their country. Thanks for post. I guess retiring this year and covid have made me think of better times in my youth. It was great to see Kings Cross again!

It has changed A LOT since then. It's almost completely different. Because there were so many drunken fights the government introduced "lock out laws" that severely limited the nightlife in the Cross. Now it's really regenerated and cleaned up. Even the gay guys have moved on to other party friendly places. That said, the X can still be very seedy in some areas.

It has changed A LOT! Originally it was Sydney's first gay district, but the American soldiers during the Vietnam war came to the area to relax, and brought heroin with them. It then became more accosiated with drugs and drunken youth, so the gays moved south to Oxford street. It cleaned up in the eighties and was just a big party area with lots of backpackers and locals. Now it's mostly gentrified to hell and back. And now the same thing is happening to Oxford street. So sad.
