King’s Hawaiian first opened on the Big Island of Hawaii in Hillo. They’re famous for the the Hawaiian Sweet bread recipe invented by e Robert Taira. They had restaurants in Hawaii but all of those are gone. They opened their first bakery/factory in 1977. The restaurant opened in the 1980’s. Good job guys. Nice episode on Kings. That bakery is awesome. The Local Place has its menu specialties only offered at the Local Place.

I usually by a loaf of rainbow bread from Kings. It's not mass produced like the ones sold in grocery stores and Costco. Fun fact, the King's Hawaiian bread sold in Hawaii actually comes from Torrance. When I was a kid, we used to bring a case of Kings bread back from Hawaii and store it in the freezer in the garage.

They have 2, both in Torrance CA. The small one on Western before 190th and the main one on Sepulveda before Crenshaw going east. On Friday's they have malasadas. Their corporate headquarters is one block east of a Western on 190th. The bread manufacturing is on Western next to the small restuarant.

RE your recollection of PEANUT BUTTER in the ox tail soup....You must be thinking of the Filipino Ox Tail Stew, Kare-Kare ("ka-rrey ka-rrey") which is thick and eaten with sauteed shrimp paste and rice..YUM. Filipinos also have a a brothy beef bone soup, Nilaga, which is similar to oxtail soup with veggies like carrots, potatoes and cabbage with a touch of fish sauce that is THE BOMB on a cold day. i am so sad that King's Bakery abandoned us here in the islands and left for Torrance in the late 70s...their King's Bakery was a good coffee shop/bakery to gather...they could have opened one back here in Hawaii...even if not in Honolulu... They were really nice in fundraising...their Portuguese Sweet Bread was their tried and true #1 seller...remember that name people...Portuguese Sweet Bread though Mr. Taira did tweak it so that it would remain fresh longer and went they moved to California, they changed the name to Hawaiian Sweet Bread to capitalize on the word 'Hawaii'.

Their other location is next to the factory where they make their products. When I go back to working for the American Red Cross, there is a family member of the owners who is a volunteer at the Long Beach ARC. I can ask him if there is a way you two can get a tour of the factory, unless you are able to get that done on your own first. That would be another epic Bill & Lisa video. Thanks for this one. I miss Torrance so much, but luckily I live not too far away in Gardena. I’ve been living in the south bay since 2007 and never knew there was a Kings Hawaiian sit down until six months ago. Girlfriend got me a banana cream pie for my bday and it was sooo good! Super fresh and not too sweet. Now that it’s open I hope to dine in soon. Glad you guys posted. I may have suggested this before not sure, but you guys should try a Japanese Hawaiian spot near me called Gardena Bowl. It’s at the bowling alley and is a staple here. My favorite dish is the Hawaiian Royale with the Char Sui Pork and Portuguese sausage. Lots of places make that as you probably know, but theirs is exceptional.

Theres a Rutt's Hawaiian cafe on Normandie and Redondo Bch blvd just behind Hong Kong Express that specializes in different Royales. Of course there's Bruddahs on the corner, but they went downhill with the new owners. To bad Bob's Hawaiian sold to Lady Bug on Western. I usually get the Portuguese sausage or the kalua pork loco moco with grilled onions at Gardena Bowl.

Don Quijote now own Tokyo Central and they changed inside the stores to look like the ones in Hawaii.
