Mariachi folk sextet, Woodenbox (formerly Woodenbox with a Fistful of Fivers) first came together in 2008 over their love of a fine sandwich, spaghetti westerns and The Beatles combined with an adoration of all things Mariachi, particularly ponchos. Over the last 4 years, the band has gone on to become one of the most exciting live acts around with sell out shows from Scotland to Texas.
Upon releasing debut album, 'Home and the Wildhunt', through Electric Honey (Belle & Sebastian, Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro) in 2009 as part of a college project, the band knew this was just the beginning a very special journey so in light of their influences having changed slightly, they dropped the 'Fistful of Fivers' bit from the end of their name and Woodenbox was born.
Setting the bar for what was yet to come, 'Home and the Wildhunt' was championed by the likes of Steve Lamacq, Huw Stephens, Vic Galloway and Marc Riley - a very rare result for any new band. The icing on the cake for the band came when their single 'Twisted Mile' became single of the week on Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie's Radio 2 show in November 2010.
2011 saw Woodenbox booked for many a festival including T in the Park, Wickerman, Belladrum, Insider, Big Tent, The Hebridean Celtic Festival and Celtic Connections plus the band notched up amazing live performances across some of the Scotland's top venues including Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Oran Mor, Edinburgh's Cabaret Voltaire, Inverness Ironworks, Dundee Doghouse and Stirling's Tolbooth. They have also ventured across the border to perform at Newcastle Cluny, London's Borderline and The Georgian Theatre in Richmond. Support slots followed with the likes of Gomez, The Peatbog Fairies and Alabama 3.
Currently holed up in the studio working on their second album with acclaimed producer Paul Savage (Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai, King Creosote, The Phantom Band), Woodenbox will release an EP - The Vanishing Act on Monday 4th June with a supporting Scottish tour.
