me and my sister were hanging off the back of a jeep in a desert in california, the sun was almost down and she looked at me and simply sang, "it's cold in the desert". We sang the entire song and i'll never forget that drive. that was 13 years ago. Americana is what ya'll do, and I cant think of a band that fills that roll more.

this song is so honest. for someone thats grown up with a christian background, saying jesus don't love you.. is a huge deal.. because we all learn that song "jesus loves me" its the first thing we are told as kids. but in honesty, sometimes when you get older, christian or not.. its how a lot of us can feel. i dont think its a negative song, towards jesus, there is a lot of power and emotion in it. I'm sure it would connect with a lot of people..

This is not only my favorite song by Kings of Leon but it is also my favorite song of all time. It moved me in ways I can't describe. There is such raw emotion in this song. You could feel his pain. I completely understand him being upset about the lyric, Jesus don't love me, and although, I know Jesus does love me, there were times in my life when I wondered if He did or would even want to. I get that pain of feeling like He doesn't and that no one is there to carry your load, not even Him.

Sounds like the guy who was in charge of the fader thought the song was ending.. once Caleb started singing again you can see how quickly he fades the song back in. Kind of makes the song beautiful in a weird way and just shows how raw it really is.
@pawcio2475 жыл бұрын
Ye I noticed it as well. For me it is a metaphor. This song represents you fighting but its a situation when you are going through some very very bad shit, almost like living hell. Fading out represents like giving up, like when you say "Im done" and then your fate literally fades you out but you cant give up. You just cant. Thats why after fading back in, the dynamics play such an important role. The song comes back twice as strong in terms of dynamics, then you just do your last scream, breath or whatever. The ending is open. The fight contiunes. You decide how you will end. I dont know if Caleb was ever aware of what he has created but Im sure that thousands of people are grateful for it.

I come back to this video quiet a lot of times. I've been listening to Kings of Leon for years now, fhe first time I listened to them was probably when I was about 14 years old(8 years ago). However I only managed to understand the meaning behind the lyrics of Cold Desert as I reached my twenties. It blew my mind when I figured out all the emotions behind the lyrics........ I was raised by my (single) mom who was struggling a lot when she was trying to take care of me, however she was really religious. And often it felt like God wasn't giving a sh#t about me, I felt exactly like the lyrics say, like "Jesus don't love me, no one ever carried my load, I'm to young to feel this old.'' However, I never gave up and I always kept going forward cause that is what I learnt from my Mom. And here I am now studying at one of the UK's best university, really close to reaching my dreams.... So guys, please do not ever give up! Never lose hope, and I mean it, NEVER!!!! Whatever happens to you, you should keep chasing your dreams, and be positive, cause that is the best way for you to become succesful!

This is incredible. I have the album and thought that cold desert was one of, if not the best song on the record and didn't quite know why. @dholmes29916 жыл бұрын
When I heard that verse about Jesus my eyes did bulge then I thought haven't I felt that way before? It's like when you go to church and see this member who looks like they have it all together. They are smiling and comforting others & when the pastor says if you feel this message was for you come to the alter & they beat you down there! It just goes to show we all can feel that way. But it passes. Thanks for sharing your honesty. You truly inspire.

What an awesome story! It's been years, but when i was a younger musician, I had a great friend growing up. He also was a great musician. A musical prodigy some would say.
