Kings Theatre: An Iconic Brooklyn Venue Remastered (Access Granted)

Go behind the curtain at Brooklyn's jaw-dropping Kings Theatre. Built in 1929, architects Rapp and Rapp, along with interior designer Harold W. Rambush, brought unprecedented opulence to the Flatbush neighborhood by mixing design elements from Versailles and the Paris Opera House. Unlike traditional Broadway venues, the Kings Theatre was to be a flagship for the Lowe's Movie Corporation. They succeeded in creating the most epic movie/live performance palace for the masses. Fans loved it and soon it became the epicenter for the Flatbush Avenue shopping district. Like other iconic venues the theater fell on hard times - the neighborhood declined, multiplexes attracted movie goers, and maintenance costs ballooned. The King Theatre closed in 1977 and stayed shut for nearly 40 years. In 2006 city leaders brought it back to life, not just to host concerts and productions but also to serve as a cultural anchor once again.
