Glad to see more videos on the more unknown battles of GNW. I want to share a personal connection to the battle of Gadebusch: One of my ancestors fought in this battle on the swedish side. As an infantry sergeant in the Dalecarlia regiment he participated in the assault on the Danish guard regiment during the most critical phase of the fighting. He survived the battle despite several wounds but later became a POW after the siege of Wismar 1716. During the prisoner transport to Russia he managed to escape and found his way home to Sweden where he took service again, helping in the defence of the swedish coast against russian attacks. He served a total of 35 years in the army before retiring. All of the above was noted in the obituary by the local parish priest upon his death in 1768. By comparing the story with surviving regimental records ive been able to confirm most of the story.

These new cannon were the invention of the Swedish artillery officer Carl Cronstedt. Instead of being dragged into position they could actually be pushed muzzle forward by horses or men and were elevated with modern screws as opposed to wedges, but the biggest innovation were the so called "geschwinda skott" (=fast/nimble rounds), a kind of proto-cartridge that cut down on reload time. In extreme cases a gun crew could shoot up to sixteen shots a minute. This kind of firepower, great mobility and the quick and accurate firing thanks to the aiming screws made these cannon a force to be reckoned with. In a letter from Stenbock to Charles XII after the battle of Gadebusch he writes that "Next to God we have Cronstedt and his guns to thank for this victory".

When France attacked the Dutch Republic in 1672 William of Orange III succesfully created a coalition against France. 10 years after the peace William would again create a coalition against France and this time he and his Dutch army would invade Britain to get them in the coalition as well. With the fall of Tönning, Denmark also achieved it's primary goal in the Great Northern War: the conquest of Holstein-Gottorp's possessions in Schleswig.
@thomasnyberg4229Ай бұрын
Old comment but still, you are wrong about Tönning. The 36 000 men strong besieging army was made up by russians and germans for the most part, and the army was lead by Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov. Danes cant do anything by themselves without assistance from allies.

Allowing the Russians a port on the Baltic would be both politically and economically very costly for Sweden. With the benefit of hindsight, it would most likely have given the Swedish Empire a few more years of life, but considering the strong position Sweden was in at the time, I can understand why Charles refused. Increasing the efforts to dislodge the Russians from their conquests around the Gulf of Finland would arguably have been the way to go, rather than yoloing into the Russian interior.

@@avenger6944 Well not really, there are several Swedish naval succeses outside of the ones you mention (especially privaters and pirate ships) and the Vasa ship is one of three of its kind and is no where near the biggest Swedish war ship up untill that time. But i totaly agree that Denmarks navy is the best. Denmark used its maritime folk in its "war fleet" while Sweden used conscripted farmboys for its war navy as all the regular "private" sailors was needed to keep the commerce fleet going. The Swedish warfleet hade therefore less skilled sailors on avredge then it's danish counterpart. However Sweden could keep its commerse going during war time while Denmark had to turn its commersial fleet in to a war fleet making the country less able to supply its economy during times of war. So yeah the Danish fleet had a higer quality of sailors and sea folk in general but the Swedish fleet was more sustainable in wartime. And Denmark has the better overall sucesses in the naval wars between the two countries through out the ages while Sweden dominates the land engagements especially after the 1600s

@@cursedkei66 A lucky shot killed the King. Otherwise did the situation look bad for Norway the moment when the King died. Had he lived then would Fredriksten have fallen within two weeks if not even earlier - and with that would the road towards western Norway lay open. And at Trondheim was the food shortage desperate. And Armfeldts food shortage problem that had lasted for months was now about to be solved as winter snow had replaced the mud that made it impossible to transport food from Jemtland to his army in Norway. The tides was turning and Trondheim was at the brink of collapse. Had the Swedish King lived on, then I would say its 95% likely that Norway would have fallen.

Small detail regarding the map: Belgium didn't belong to the Dutch republic in the 18th century. At this time it belonged to the Spanish before being annexed by the Austrians after the War of The Spanish Succession. The Dutch saw Belgium as a bufferzone between them and France

Russias artillery was better organized. Swedens strength laid first and foremost in its infantry, altough its cavalry also was very good (aside from its dragoons).

The Pruth Campaign was Karl XII greatest blunder, had he been with the Turkish army the war would have been over. The Russian army was completly surounded with no food or water. Peter drinking heavely haveing hysterical fits when one of his generals sugested bribing the Turks, as nothing else was forthcomming than surrender the offer was made and the Grand Visur accepted before Karl XII could get there, when he arrived Peter was marching off with his army quit content while Karl stood there with the Turkish Visur much like the Knight and the Toad with the Toad haveing the overhand, "I HAVE THE ARMY!". Unfortunatly for the Toad the Sultan sent him the Silk Rope and the Turkish vs Russian war was to continue but for Karl XII the damage was done and all he could do was find a way to get back to Sweden without being captured himself as Poland was no longer safe for him. The story in Sweden and Turkey is The Tale Of Karl XII And The Seven Grand Visurs, so many there where during the kings stay in Turkey.

Carolus was indeed a man whom both lived and died to his august principles. He sure as Hellsingland was no Neville Chamberlain .
