Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. After the disastrous Battle of the Bismarck Sea and the end of the Guadalcanal Campaign, we have entered into a phase of relative calmness in the Pacific. In Burma, however, war was raging as fiercely as ever for the brave British and Indian soldiers. In this episode, join us as we continue to cover the long-range penetration of the Chindits in what is known as Operation Longcloth.

This video made me very curious as to whether this is actually the battles where my great-uncle passed away. He was a B-24 Liberator pilot for the RCAF, and his plane and one other had everything unessential stripped the plane except for the rear turret (though a news report from then contradicts this) with the objective to fly extreme range into Burma, and dropping off supplies deep behind enemy lines. I was told special forces, but I'm starting to think its one of these groups. In any case, his mission was considered top secret, so my grandmother never found out about her brother's circumstances that led up to his death until the 1990s. Of the two planes, one made it back, and the other did not, that one being her brother. What I know from the declassified report is that his plane wasn't found until the Malaysian emergency in the 50s. It's noted that it crashed 2,000 ft above sea level near Kroh, near the Siam-Malaysian border. Interesting Lee, they found the plane in relatively good shape except the front of it, found no bodies, but found all of the supplies still inside the airplane. If you would like this information in greater detail, I can email you upon request with all the details that I know at this time. I already have feelers out requesting information from the DOD. I feel like the air resupply campaign is a heavily overlooked part of the WWII Pacific Theatre.

My Grandad was a Lieutenant Colonel in the XV Corps British Indian Army and took part in the Burma campaign. He died peacefully of old age in 2005, and never spoke of the war, REST IN PEACE GRANDAD.

There was Ken Burns miniseries. In it, Post war times, the new wives had learned that their new husbands seldom wanted to talk about their War time experiences. However, at social gatherings the wives found that the Vets would talk to each other. This allowed the wives to get increased insights to what their husbands had lived through.

My father was in a reserved occupation, but was a member of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade and drove an ambulance during the Blitz. He never spoke of it, and I only know because I asked him why he had a medal ribbon on his uniform.

Another good show and info. I wonder if the Bromhead you mentioned was any relation to the one from Roake's Drift?? The turning of the local tribes to help in the fight was a successful move that the US Special Forces would do in Vietnam some 20+ years later.

Major Gonville Bromhead VC, of Rorke's Drift fame, and Major Robert Benjamin Gonville "George" Bromhead MBE of the Chindits, are in fact related to each other. The family itself has deep military roots. Gonville's father, Sir Edmund, served at Waterloo. His grandfather, Sir Gonville, served in the American Revolutionary War. His great-grandfather, Boardman, fought in Quebec under James Wolfe. I'm unsure of the relation, but I think George is Gonville's grandson or great-grandson, if not a distant cousin.

Ledo Road was necessary, despite what the British said at the time, because the horrendous losses suffered by American pilots flying the dangerous "Hump" supply route over the Himalayas were simply too great. The India-China Airlift, or Himalayan Hump Operation, was the highest-loss, highest-risk air transport mission of World War II. It is estimated that, on average, a flight crew member was lost for every 500 tons. More than 1,300 aircrew and 600 aircraft were lost due to weather, malfunctions, and Japanese fighters. There were nearly 1,200 bailouts over the Hump; 345 men were never found and were listed as missing in action. Pilots referred to the route as “the aluminum trail” because of the number of airplanes lost along it. Think of it as the USAAF's "ironbottom sound", if you will.

Gen. Mutaguchi, seriously, look into it, they couldn't fire or make him step down, so they did the only thing they could to help save the situation and that was promote Him. It got him back where he could be Pretty again and for the Men it got rid of one of the forces causing un-nesscary Japanese deaths.

Hate to bring this up every week, but your map keeps showing the demarcation line of Japanese influence in the Dutch East Indies not including the Tanimbar and Aru Islands. These are Japanese-occupied island groups, and in fact, will remain so for the duration of the war
